hahaha this version is awful. This is one of my favorite songs too! Maybe they just didn't care when it came to actually trying to make it sound like the original?
even when you think the cure are headed for performance disaster, they somehow pull it off. simon was way too heavey on the bass, perry just fucks it up, robert not only forgets the lyrics completely but he proceeds to improvise his guitar parts which turn out to be brilliant. this is why i've been watching the cure live for almost 20 years now.
Nothing can ever hope to get near or ever compete with the CURE,It has no equal, nor will it ever, because it cannot, Theres Only one true GOD,only one you, only one me,Only one CURE.Unique,in its oneness, never to be duplicated,or substituted.
I don't think Robert changed the words on purpose. I think he was under the influence of something. At 2:03, look at his face... he has a look as if to say "shit... I'm singing the wrong song." The look on the keyboard player's face says it all as he shakes his head. Roberts playing is also way off.
I love Robert and The Cure but man this is NOT one of Robert's best performances but rather a great anti-drug commercial IMHO.
well they wrote the music for the bloodflowers album in 1999, this video was only one year before it...so it's likely that he already had the lyrics to some of the bloodflowers songs...you never know what they're gonna do on stage...
If he was drunk, why did he change the lyrics back on the second verse? I dunno, nobody knows with The Cure, thats why they are still the best band out there. Take Care. Its ok to disagree with me.
listen to the begiining lyrics : "I've been watching me fall for it seems like years"... doesn't that ring a bell ? Robert Smith is known for changing the lyrics of existing songs (I have so many versions of faith for example) and try out new lyrics which ultimately end up on another album
Hello, Robert is not wasted, this is from the bizarre festival-- They were supposed to play songs a bit different or out of sorts. Thats what's good about The Cure, their ability to change.
I think the song sounds great here. There is so much honesty in this film and in his voice. So what if he is stoned or drunk
(looks more like stoned to me) it's still him. Vices and scabs and all, just like we all have. It's his humanity we want to see, and then overlay that amazing superhuman gift he has been granted all over it. I mean, every time we play or hear a Cure song, we are reminded of how incredibly special and talented he is, right? Here's to his humanity as well!
I've looked up some info on this show, Google Bizzare Festival Cure and a site named "There is no if...", the guy said the first problem was the sound sucked throughout the entire festival, the audience was quiet and tired by the time the cure came out and Robert was noticably drunk and seemed to be aggitated by the crowd's lack of energy. I kinda got a good laugh at how bad they sounded and how drunk Smith was!
i was there 1998,m definitly my fave version of untitled, saw the wdr broadcast shortly after the gig and when the lyrics to bloodflowers were posted on the internet i remebered the words he sang and was hoping the song "watching me fall" was gonna be as cool as this song, but wasn't in the end, but still cool anyhow. especially cool how he was lying on the satge during the break instead of going backstage, you can ee him stand up around 0:55 into the song ;-)
Truly a bizarre performace, fitting for the festival. Robert does pick himself up from the floor, and seems to be in a major daze..thanks so much for posting this, the song is amazing anyway...
Well Robert is quite stoned here... look carefully and you will see him rise from the floor at the beginning... despite being wasted he manages to sing at the beginning the words that we were about to know 2 years later as Watching Me Fall
I simply adore land love this song. Used to go for a walk and listened to it, it's so nice. i adore Robert Smith, he cant be greater than he is

He's completely drunk, he sings the wrong lyrics, and forget to play the guitar part before the voice entering the song

Robert totally avoided playing the opening part on the fender VI, the song feels flat because of it
