I cannot believe that there is really a debate between red and white poppies. I buy a red poppy not because i believe in wars, but i do feel that we should support the people who fight for a freedom so that we can have the life we have today. The red poppy is a symbol of their sacrifice and not an emblem of war. The British Legion do a wonderful jobfor injured, old soliders and their famlies, where does the money from the white poppies go, does it help our heroes.
@toby5140 the money from white poppies goes towards education programmes and peace work programmes that promote peace in order to try and prevent future wars so that there aren't more injured and old soldiers, or broken families created by deaths of soldiers. i believe this is just as important as helping the current injured soldiers and their families, and so i buy and wear both
As far more innocent civlians killed in the 20th and 21st Century wars/battles (and for centuries beforehand) why not consider that these innocent people are MORE worth remembering and lambasting the animalistic, retarded, greedy, political warmongering? Those innocent civilans didn't have guns. They weren't getting paid for getting shot at and weren't shooting an anyone else's sons in the process.
TBeing 'offended' by a white poppy is bizarre. My grandfather and his 6 brothers were all volunteers in WWI. 4 came back - 1 with massive shellshock. Let's get things straght - they were teenagers, surrounded by propoganda and flagwaving and if they had any idea what was actually going on or what would happen to them, I doubt these young lads would have gone. Plastering the words 'glory' and 'duty' to this is sick and repetitive. War's wrong - victims are of all ages, genders and 'trades'...
There clearly is a patriotic and militaristic undertone to this very British yearly event. I make no apologies for saying that I am becoming weary of it being shoved down my throat through the media each year. You do not have to wear a poppy, or donate to the British Legion to be grateful to the brave men who died in the wars. These men were brave but they were also victims of the class system and their own political leaders. If I ever wore a poppy it would be white.
@Cornerforward thanks for that, but as an ex service man who saw combat action in Northern Ireland , Bosnia, Kosovo , Iraq and Afgainistan soldiers fight not for thier country or thier class , or thier queen but for each other!
As for the red poppy haveing military undertone ???? rememberance day is about honoring the memory of former soldiers = military ! the clues in the title!
The Red Poppy represents all those who fought for and maintained our Freedoms. The blood they shed was red. I, too, want peace but I understand the Freedoms that we enjoy today - must be maintained by us. Lest WE Forget!!!
I wear both :) One to remember the people who died in the past, and one for it to stop happening in the future and have peace :)

to be ethical it is simple....
heres what you do.
1 buy a Red Poppy to remember those soldiers who died.=the british legion get some money
2 buy another Red Poppy= The british legion get some more money
3 Tippex ONE of them White, to symbolise your hope that there are no future wars
4 Simply wear them both simultaneously,
who could argue with that
This is what intelligent people should do.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
If you wear the white poppy you might as well go spit on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. Pacifism is a morally bankrupt position.

I choose the red poppy to support ex-soldiers and their families, and to give thanks for those who gave their lives so we could be free.
