  • There isn't some deep seeded motivation here. she just happens to like one doll over the other. nothing to do with race

  • @Teddjenkins I'm not a social scientist or anything like that. I made this video in high school just to see what kind of response I would get. You may or may not be right but I think it's important that the responses of these children are not simply dismissed without further study into their true feelings about themselves. The "big lips" comment she made was strange because the dolls were exactly the same in every way save for skin color. I think it is very worth it to take a closer look here.

  • She knew why, she just didnt want to answer that question because she realized that the doll is JUST like her...

  • @dreyaleesings exactly. And this is what is so sad. Because the conclusion is that she must view her self as ugly as well. DAMN RACISM white supremacy, DAMN YOU!!!!

  • No skin color by itself is beautiful it depends alot on the package. I myself as a white person could care less what color anyone is ugly comes in all colors just as well as beauty does too.

  • @berrywoke But did not you see, the dolls looked the same other than skin color?

  • Does the video poster really think this is indicative of "self-hate"? In a six-year old? I'm dubious.

She seems like a lovely girl, and her responses didn't seem to me to be socially programmed. Maybe black children, in general, appreciate light-colored skin? Don't make thought criminals of them for it! I'm sure there are aspects of the "black character" that white children are drawn to, too.

Low self-esteem finds many convoluted ways to precipitate itself.

  • @thespacialone Oh come on, the social programming is clearly exposed here. Dont make excuses for the clear effects of racism white supremacy.

  • @AfroBoriquen Very funny, Mr Troll. If it wasn't for "white supremacism" lurking in the corner of every kindergarten, how would you fellows amuse yourselves?

  • This doesn't prove anything. You could have given her M&Ms and she would have picked one over the other. Put her in a school yard and see which children she plays with if you want to know if she hates black people. This test is a fallacy and it proves jackdoodley. Try it again with two fruit roll ups and see. The kids are just picking any doll/object to answer the dumb questions. And they never ever focus on the kid who chooses the black doll. Why? Because that disproves the test.

  • @WhereYaBoss Oh stop. M&M's and fruit roll ups are inanimate things. These were dolls that represent people with human features and the results were clear. Why are excuses being made for the exposition of the clear effects of racism white supremacy?? Are you ashamed ? do you feel guilty? Truth hurts?

  • @AfroBoriquen This test is garbage. If you want to see if kids have an issue with their race see who they choose to play with in a school yard. This test only proves absolutely jack doodley. Those are dolls. Inanimate objects. They might as well give them two colored marbles to pick from. Two different colored socks to pick from and the results would be the same. They are just GUESSING! Which one is the bad one...huh?? I don't know...uhm, this one. (Holding the black doll) lol

  • I think this is quite harsh, cause i think the girl realizes she looks like the black doll, and she also says it's ugly... It's so sad..

  • @jankie888 You really aren't helping anyone by posting ignorant stuff like this.

  • I can't believe... sorry

  • @Adam10084 I'm Puerto Rican also, and even so It feels a little painful to know that a dark skin tone (even Hispanic skin) gets classified as ugly to most young kids.

  • Black=dirty??

  • Maybe black parents teaching their children that black is beautiful will help, but we need to ask ourselves why that's even necessary in the first place. Do white parents teach their kids that white is beautiful? Black America is suffering from an identity crisis, yet the only barometers that most "intellectuals" use to measure progress are financial and educational milestones. Whatever correlation exists between this identity crisis and the attainment of those things is by-and-large ignored.

  • I'm 14 now and i remember always seeing white princesses and white dolls but i do remember when i did see a black doll i was really hyped about it. I was so happy to finally have a doll that looked like me. Through my playing with dolls years i had only stumbled across two black dolls. It would help to have diversity in childrens toys and cartoons then when they grow up beauty to them will be in all different kinds of colours.

  • We own very little and the little we do own is not aimed at building up our community by solving the prblems that plague us. Therefore our community has little substance, little backing and no real economic or political power. We live in societies built off our backs and built to keep us down. America is an extreme case, the UK is bad also. Start learning what's really going on. it's been time we wake up and deal with our problems, stop the cycle!

  • What's obvious but not consciously visible to many (black & white) is the problems (psychologically and phyisically) Black people globally have been through. without overstanding Ourstory, it's not possible to know a solution when you're unaware of the problem. We suffer from Post traumatic slavery syndrome, which consists of many influences... self-hate, double consciousness, the acceptance of our condition etc... This is passed down through our teachings and our genetics. Analyse it!!

  • this just seems fake.

  • Turn off the tv. This is where they are receiving the most poisonous of messages, even in family friendly shows. Surround them with diverse books and stories.

  • IMO: I believe this comes forth as we (black ppl) are often misrepresented in the mass media as being 'bad' ie: the thief, single parents, dead beat dads, gangsters, entertainers (glorifying women), school dropouts, uneducated hence why we are seen as the lower working class, sadly the knowledge gained from this misrepresentation is now what the younger generation see as the representation of the black race. Where there is knowledge there is power and profit to be made from our self-hatred.

  • it's not supprising. you talk to your child that they are beautiful sometimes that don't mean anything to them. i was in harlem and this little girl told her mother i hate being black. her mother was shocked but i wasn 't. i hate being black myself and it doesn't matter that people would call me beautiful. i still feel like shit and it is to much drama.

  • @EuropeanGuy87 Actually. There are [pureblooded] Africans that have natural blonde hair and are born with blue/green eyes. Some are even born with a pigmitation problem that makes them born Albino. [Not being racist, thats what they call it.] So technially, they have white skin. Oh, and dandelions are weeds. But they have pretty flowers. Kids like them too, they love them, and everyones knows about them. Little kids will pick dandelions anyway. BTW, most little kids think dandelions are flowers.

  • @NcoleyCP Albinism is a genetic disease, even Asians and Indians can have it or animals.. The blue and green eyes evolved independently among Europeans 11.000 yrs ago. The genes are recessive, and can only be inherited by blacks or Asians if they had intercourse with Caucasian. How would you know these people are pure black ? did u check in their 7 generation family tree to see who they had sex with ?? A child can inherit traits from down 10 generations

  • @NcoleyCP Also dont forget that Europeans evolved their white skin because of climate condition and regulation of vitamin D - blacks remained dark cause in Africa there is very warm and sun all day long. It's a natural adaptation that can make the difference from life to death.. that is why I don't judge skin colors in people..it's like you would blame the sun and nature for causing i..and that is stupid :)

  • this is horrible! It is unbelievable that such self hatred is promoted in any community. This reflects the issues that still exist in American society!

  • Why would anyone say this is staged. These are the ppl living in denial. My daughter is 5 and she comes home from preschool saying she wants long flowing hair. I tell her her hair IS long. Then she says long to her ankles. Inside I know what shes saying and it saddens me. I tell her I love her hair and its beautiful. Im going to push for self love in her but outside influences are hard at work. Stay positive all and maybe we can change this natural neg perception.

  • now i see why i have so much insecurity its because im not lightskin no wonder my self esteem is so low and i have to do drugs to feel good about myself

  • @jambrandon531 stop it, it's stupid and not funny

  • @oussamacabronnify i dont care what you say i hate myself because i am not good enough for women so dont tell me nothing

  • @jambrandon531 nigga, didn't u momma tell u?

if a woman don't want you SHE is simply not good enough for you.

i also have struggled with women my brother at the end it all works out ;p

    Peace and love.

  • @oussamacabronnify nah my mom didnt tell me that my homeboy told me i come across as lame to women i believe i am lame no lie

  • @jambrandon531 well if you think you are lame, then you probablly are.if you think im gonna feel bad for you and stuff i ain't..there are people who have it way worse then you and you worry about ur skincolor.Ive seen one of your videos,, u ain't no ugly dude(no homo).Srsly get over yourself be a man.

    Peace and love .

  • now i see why i have some much insecurity its because im not lightskin no wonder my self esteem is so low and i have to do drugs to feel good about myself

  • THE YOUNG LADY KNEW THAT SHE DIDNT LIKE THE BLACK DOLL BECAUSE IT WAS BLACK , BUT , WAS SMART ENOUGH NOT TO ADMIT IT !!!!

  • There are scientist that study sociology. They know the effects of non-positive imagery and this video is prime example of it's effects.

  • that little girl is not 6, she looks more like 8...there is no way

  • @zappy158 She was most certainly 6. She's just big for her age.

  • I hate the question "which doll looks like you" after "which is ugly" that's just..mean.

  • @THEGLASSOFMILK2 I just copied the experiment I saw.

  • So staged. I don't get this.

  • @princessdashy Most certainly not staged thank you very much.

  • @lilkk234 many ppl pay for big lip and tans.. something else.. and these girls need to know their the nubian females of the most blessings.. no reply will be read.

  • @princessdashy I agree

  • It's not about the black people per se. It's the NATURE of just the color itself - black, and its association to things in nature that gives it a negative connotation. When skin burns, it turns darker. Scabs, wounds, blemishes. When we use the word "dark", it connotes "evil". But sometimes it can also mean something neutral like chocolate as food.

it has nothing to do with black people

  • @blognewb I nominate this for stupidest comment.

Darkness has been historically associated with things that are bad...and who do you think created those labels and associations in the first place?

  • @Blactor UH NATURE? What's the color of burnt matter? black. carbon. The expressions, "you can see the LIGHT", light is white. black holes are black as they absorb and suck in all the energy around it. You're stupid for not considering everything else around you and assume it's always against black people.

  • @blognewb Forgive me for lashing out and saying your comment was stupid, that was out of line. I apologize.

However, your reply contains the crux of my argument: you said "black holes are black as they absorb and suck in all the energy around it". The actions of a so-called black hole have nothing to do with its blackness. You're CREATING a negative association with the blackness of the so-called black hole that has nothing to do with the fact that it's black.

Do you see what I'm saying?

  • @blognewb If you tend to see anything that is dark as inherently bad or negative, where did you learn to do that?

Do you think Africans, before colonization, automatically thought they were bad people simply because they were darker than others? I highly doubt it.

A person doesn't make associations that people don't teach them to make.

  • @blognewb You say it's "nothing to do with black people", but as a dark-skinned person it DOES have at least SOMETHING to do with me, since, by your logic, being darker skinned equates me with other dark things in nature, like Black holes, which are, to you, inherently negative.

So how would that NOT affect me, or affect my perception of your perception of me?

  • damn, im black. now i feel all ugly :(

  • this is heartbreaking

  • That's messed up. I can't believe that. I had no idea black children had these kinds of issues. How sad.

  • If you guys studied UNBIASLY the effects that psycologically damaged minds has on a people Generation after Generation After Generation after Generation in it's entirety..... alot of these questions could be answered.......The same way I study Slavery, The "holocaust & other tragic events in history. HATE and

SELF-HATE is a TAUGHT and LEARNED BEHAVIOR.......So now the question is WHERE did it ORIGINATE. Every character DEFECT has an ORIGIN.

  • @mssquirrely Where did it originate?

  • @lilkk234 - I stated my opionion in the previous comment: "White Supremacy" the catalyst for PYSCHOLOGICALLY DAMAGED MINDS resulting in SELF-HATE, perpetuated from generation to generation to generation to generation. Mainstream media continues the propaganda of light/white being better than dark/black. skin bleaching, straight swinging hair, dark skinned with blonde hair?, eye contacts(blue, green, etc) and so on.

  • oh god this makes me feel really bad, the saddest thing is that she thinks she's ugly and bad because she's black,i'm from jamaica and this goes onn in plenty of places even here.In jamiaca the brown skinned peolpe and the white ones are treated better, and i'm brown. its really obvious and even in jamaican songs too.

  • shes only six? she looks older

  • Let them start watching cartoons that are all black (boondocks isnt for kids). oh w8.. there is none. Not that I know of. Since like 99% cartoons are related to mostly white people. Its no surprise to non-white kids that choose over white dolls or white action figures.. The Frog Princess movie considered by kids to be a scary cartoon show. Not very positive so walt disney failed with that one too

  • @lufffy I don't think they are trying very hard over at Disney.

  • @lufffy lol i agree, why dh did they have to make the princess black? smh racist motherfuckers. race is still an issue. I sit next to a white woman on the bus the ole bitch moving like i got dirt on me or sumfin. smfh. nothing has changed. actions acts better than words trust me yall.

  • @lufffy Disney is going to put out whatever sells most. Don't blame Disney as if taught self hate to young black girls and boys. If you want more shows like the Boondocks pick up a pen and make one!

  • stop the hate kids like these are the future

  • When I was little I most likely would have picked the white doll. I do not hate myself, I liked the white dolls better because I saw there was alot more white people in the world.

  • One thing to keep in mind is that since whites are the majority in America as far as population their images will be the majority image in the media that all kids grow up seeing. So all kids both Black, white and others are accustomed to seeing white people as the dominate image. That doesn't mean white is better it just means we all see white images in America more than any other in movies,TV and magazines etc.

  • This is a result of PUBLIC SCHOOLS!! I was taught I was a NIGGER by the 1st grade and have been one every since!!!

  • self hate is real in the black community and we need to face it and eliminate it

  • I think these doll test are too simplistic and unfair to the kids. The kids are in a no win situation. If a white kid is asked to pick the bad doll then which doll is he or she supposed to pick? The white doll? The Black doll? Either way they can't win with their pick.

  • @CrowdPleeza Yea I definitely think there are issues regarding the validity of this experiment. The kids don't have much room to explain themselves without the questions polluting their thoughts. But I was just replicating the original as you know. If I were to conduct my own, I'd do things differently. Something I hope to do over the summer.

  • black and white contrast each other because how would it be to watch a sun set without the light being slowly diminished by the great mistery of darkness or how would it be to live in a dark night without the promess of daylight. We will have to learn to love our differences because we are one and we will remain one until the end.

  • @michaelmusica I understand what you are saying. Ideally people should view black white and everything in between as beautiful and embrace the differences instead of trying to smooth them out and get rid of them. I just wish that the opposite wasn't imprinted in some children at such a young age.

  • ii was studying this in Civics class. && it really hit me. this is Krazyyy . This is the legacy of Segregation

  • @lilb0ssy210 A dark and dirty legacy. Both these kids were the children of immigrants so I thought their responses would be somewhat different.

  • This is sad to see.I wish blk parents would teach their kids that blk is beautiful!

  • I know. This was very hard to watch, if more blk parents teach their children more about our rich history and great accomplishments it wouldn't be this way. But the sad thing is a lot of older people don't even know about it.

  • I agree 100%

We been dubed down but its never too late.I wish blk people will break out of that "ghetto mindset"and wake up!

  • That's right, its never too late!

  • @ExoticByNature Yea when I showed this girl's mother the video she was shocked. She had no idea her daughter felt this way. I looked in the girls room and every single doll she owned was white and had blonde hair. I was thinking "How could you not know?"

  • @jordan484 They are working on it at church after they saw this lol

  • @jordan484 The sayng "Black is beautiful" is pure crap. You can see that even small kids from all races preffer white persons because the average white person is much prettier and handsome than the average black person. This is a FACT OF LIFE and has nothing to do with racism. It can't be changed by ideology or forced education in schools and churches, it's in the genes of every kid, irrespective of race. This is not meaning that blacks are mean or inferiour. They are just less beautifull.

  • @oneinteligentmuslim personally i think black women the most attractive out there and we know black men are the perferred

i think the media has alot to do with it.for example, there are some ppl in america that think africa is this big dirt pile.it look how the races are protrayed on tv!

  • @jordan484 This is only your personal option to consider black women more attractive, but this is NOT the general opinion. You can search on the net and you will see that 42% of the black women never succeed to find a husband. You will see that white women find plenty of husbands and many marry several times. Except rare individuals as Denzel Washington or Sidney Poitier, the black males have NO elegant facial features and most of them have disproportionate slim calfs ans flask penises.

  • @oneinteligentmuslim yeah i dont really understand the 'black is beautiful' saying.it makes blacks seem unsure and insecure.other races dont rely on a saying or reminder.its weird.

  • @Midnightx77 The "black is beautiful" saying was a late 60's early 1970's way of trying to stop black ppl from thinking they are ugly. A person who hates themselves will not only destroy themselves but they will always not think twice about killing YOU! black Self hatred was founded during american slavery and it is perpetuated till this very day. Do you understand now?

  • @realityme not really.i hate black folks that diss black women that straighten their hair.people always assume its 'self hate' just cause a black women prefers straight hair (which straight hair is top notch sexy!)

  • @oneinteligentmuslim how is less beautiful scientific, beauty is subjective, read accounts by blacks in africa before and during the slave trade who thought that whites were down right ugly and apelike,,its not a fact of life wow

  • @jordan484 You cant unteach something thats already inherent. She's too young to have any impact on her from the media, so this is the truth!

  • @APontiacof455cubes Shes not too young to be impact by the media! Most little girls want to be a princess and wat you see when you look at tv?Plus, the world protray long hair as better and when you look around thats all you see, even if its real of fake

  • @jordan484 Actually her parents should not teach that black is beautiful. They should teach that no matter the colour of your skin, no matter what your features are like, what really counts is education, respect and love.

I am Italian and I had a "black" baby doll, even if the only "blacks" I had seen were the Robinsons on TV.

  • @LouiseHans10 I understand where you coming from but the media ALWAYS protray black in a negative way so yes, someone has to show "black" in a positive light.

  • I'm looking forward to your next documentary on this. I am making documentaries myself; my latest one is called "Nigeriaphobia" and is a commentary on all the negative press Nigerians are getting these days, how Shell Oil has ruined the lives of the Delta Region, and asks the question: "Who are the real scammers?" (Big Oil, of course) :)

  • That's relaly cool. Recently I've been tying to look into that more but I just haven't had the time because of school. Ýour videos are very interesting and I think more people should know about them.

  • this is so sad shes just a baby she shouldnt even be thinkin this about herself

  • Wow, that's pretty disturbing.

Yet, strangely, if the same question was put before me, i'd probably choose the reverse.

Yet, i understand the ratio of white's choosing the reverse might be different then the 4/5 you got.

I'm pretty keen to see the documentary, even though i did not like what i saw (i mean the choices of course, the kid is adorable).

    Rgds,

  • Yes I didn't think I would get any responses like this girls because I know their families and I know how they were raised so this was definitely a surprise.

To make my documentary different from those that have been done before I plan to interview white, Latino, oriental, native, middle eastern children with many different color dolls so this might take me a while to make =).

  • Okay, well i'd like to see it, but take your time (of course :)

Do you think it's something like thin/fat or fashionable/out of fashion stuff..... as in that we're all influenced by how the fashion industry portrays ideals? (i'll see in the doc ;)

I guess (and hope) though that if that's the case, since there are more and more 'black' models and tv stars etc, it will become less and less prevalent.

    Thanks,

  • I think it has a lot to do with the media. That's something I want to address, I just hope I can do the topic justice.

  • I think I remember someone doing this study with barbie dolls a while ago. Apparently, nothing much has changed since then. Black dolls are still generally considered ugly.

  • It's really sad. I hoped it wouldn't be true with these kids because I thought i knew them well.

  • Yeah. I hear you on that. My brother's and sister come close to having that same mentality (mainly my sister though), and it almost always puzzles me how deeply rooted the mentality is.

  • @nenyemusic

Which doll was supposed to be picked as ugly?

  • @CrowdPleeza There is no right or wrong answer. I guess the questions do shape how the child would answer. They could have picked neither but they never did.

  • @CrowdPleeza, that would depend on your definition of beauty, and whether or not you subscribe to what the media portrays. Personally, I think those black dolls are ugly. The white dolls work, because that image has been firmly established. A black doll with that white doll body is just unattractive (to say the least).

  • @nenyemusic

So you're saying that Black dolls are ugly because they're not well made?

  • @CrowdPleeza, more or less yeah. To me, those black dolls just don't fit. They aren't proper. It just seems as if someone couldn't care less and just made a white doll and painted it black (or brown... whatever).
