It gives +7 hunter lvl which is invisible. Also if you are doing any kind of hunter in the snowy area, it teleports you there. It is also a useful way to get to death plateau for the RotM quest.

You should do the strange rock things for runecrafting, it will get you about as much xp as tears and its also weekly. The only trade off is that you do have to actually do about 400 ess of runecrafting, but id say the trade off is worth it.
