@Jellybeantiger Ha Ha Ha BULLSHIT!!!!!!! For the record ............. there is no record of Man U singing it at any ceremony, Some old lady claimed it was first sung in Old Trafford but upon further investigation it was concluded that the particular game she said it had been sung no-one present there could remember it being sung and even if it was possible the way she said it was sung, exactly like the Rogers/ Hammerstein version that it would be impossible for thousands of people to sing it .
@LenaDelovely You are absolutely correct. I was thinking of the original play by Ferenc Molnár' - "Liliom" that is the basis for "Carousel." The accidental/suicidal death of Liliom/Billy is one of those things that gets fooled around with in each adaptation, as are several elements of the play. There's a good Wikipedia article on "Liliom" about it. Pretty interesting.
@contaigious You can't get a much better life song. This is also absolutely the best version. Claramae Turner was a marvellous singer. Every time you hear this will remind you of your grandad. Best!
This was my mother's favorite song. She died at the age of 47 and this song will always mean so much to me. It is a lesson too many people don't understand but should! Life is so short and all of the petty things should be chucked away where they belong. Remember...you are given only so much time on this earth and you should be making the best of it while you are here. So stop the bullshit and give yourself a chance to live before it's too late.
Great song, great movie. Thanks for uploading this video. I love Shirley Jones & Gordon MacRae on this movie & in Oklahoma also. They were the best musical movie couple.
Eyesk8er..what? We are trying to bring back the same type of music...as for spelling...there is different lingo similar to shorthand in this generation. If you can get the word out, there should be a musical performance for our generation (50 and over). These performances were chersihed.

But I can imagine the great musicals going on for decades.
One of the problems is that it really takes a lot of time, planning and attention to details to make a musical. Tyler Perry may reach that goal but not so certain that it will keep going once Andrew Lloyd Webber retires.
ALW chose to not film his plays and that hurts musical theater in the long run. Good for the box office is not good for the legacy.
I hear this stuff, what I'm most reminded of is how sorely missed the great "show" composers. There's not a single composer in this century who can compare to R & H, or Hart, or Lerner and Lowe, or a other greats of the past. Rodgers must roll over in his grave at the thought of Andrew Lloyd Weber. Libby copied from another email...I will work with you in anyway possible to make it happen.

What is with you people? This song is from the musical Carousel, written by Richard Rogers & Oscar Hammerstein in 1945. It is sung twice in the musical; Once as shown in this video & at the finale for the graduation. From most of the comments, it is quite clear that music (& spelling) are no longer taught in many schools and that both civility & common courtesy are endangered acts.
hello, I quite agree with your comments about the previous contributors, it's one of my favourite pieces from this fine musical, wish more people on here would appreciate it.
@eyesk8er : Hi. I've been unsuccessfully trying to find a clip of this song as it was done at the end of the movie during the graduation scene you describe. Do you know if it's available? Thanks.
Believe it or not........ Borrussia Dortmund pardon the spelling) have it as their signature song. Was watching a game against Hansa Rostock and the song came belting out along with the english subtitles which popped up for our German cousins to sign ze song.

This is the definitiive and only true version of this great song. This is Claramae's and Shirley's song. This is a woman's song. The great "I left my heart in San Francisco" was also written for and dedicated to the great soprano Claramae Turner.
diot. Unfortunately, football fans are quite often very rich, but ignorant. This is an all American song and a woman's song. It should only be sung by women too. Having a man sing this is as silly as women singing Nessum Dorma. It just doesn't sound right.

I sang this song at my grandma's funeral almost 10 years ago. It's so hard to watch this movie now because I cry the whole way through it. It's one of my favorite Rodger's and Hammerstein shows. i miss you Grandma<3
"Carousel" is without the slightest doubt one of the great masterpieces of the American Musical. I saw this movie many many years ago on the day of my 18th birthday and I have cherished this movie ever since. In my opinion Claramae Turner gave the very best rendition of that immortal song. Thank you so much! After all those years it still moves me to tears.
This movie came out the year I was born... I didn't see it until I was 9 years old... this song still makes me cry the same way it did the first time I saw and every time since... markhalbert is right... it's powerful, inspiring, and uplifting.
Ballerinabbz--Without spoiling the whole plot, it's basically about a very nice girl who marries a punk loser. But he gets one chance to make things right. (A good library would have the dvd--it is really worth watching!)
I love this song. Besides this one, my favorite rendition is by Aretha Franklin...she brought a lot of soul to it. Rogers and Hammerstein were absolute genuises.
Some football fans from Liverpool have adopted this song as their own. They sing it in unison at football matches. Actually, it can sound quite inspiring sometimes!
renard. You are correct. The Liverpool fans couldn't have chosen a better song for inspiration. Another great inspiration song is the German "O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!". I like this one too.
Huh? What? Duh? But...? That's like saying a great inspirational song is Rogers & Hammerstein's classic "When You Walk Through a Storm Hold Your Head Up High." When did "O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!" become a song? It's the opening line to a verse written and set to music by Beethoven, sure, but it's not the title of anything. Sorry, but I'm really picky about silly crap like this. I apologise!
The Stockwell. The song is called "I left my heart in San Francisco" is the name by which that song is commonly known. It also happens to be the start too. This song is called "I'll never walk alone". The other one is called "An die Freude".
Dear Swanning: Okay, I'm baffled. I misread "Another great inspiration song is the German "O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!" as meaning there is an inspiring German song titled "O Freunde...!" "An die Freude" is a poem set to music by Beethoven - the lovable lug - and "O Freunde, etc!" are the introductory words Beethoven pounded out to GET to the Schiller poem. It's NOT just the codeine talking - I'm confused! And I LIVE in San Francisco - how'd we get from Vienna to Tony Bennett? YARG!
The Stockwell. I just mentioned that "I left my heart in San Francisco" was a song, which is also inspirational, was dedciated to Claramae Turner, who is associated with "I'll never walk alone" (see this clip). Tony Bennet was one of the singers of "I left my heart in San Francisco.". I agree with you that Beethoven's music is inspirational too.
SwanningAround: I consider "I Left My Heart . . ." to be a love song, a specific one that isn't inspirational the way "YNWA" is. Those "little C
cable cars" don't seem (to me) as universal as "the sweet silver song of a lark." Beethoven's music, yes; no question about that. And, since you obviously know your classical singers, you'll probably understand my thinking Mahler's "Um Mitternacht" is one of THE inspirational songs. Again, it's my personal taste. I's been fun reading your comments.
TheStockwell. You are quiite correct. Somehow my thoughts were a little sidetracked. I only bought up "I left my heart in San Francisco" as Claramae Turner was associated with it, and she appears in this video. I agree that many things Mahler are inspirational including "Um Mitternacht". Thank you also. :)
Yes...why did Rodgers/Hammerstein even adapt the song from the original...and, why did Frank Santra sing the same. It's only the people who pay attention to the songs and lyrics that understand. Pre-1950.
It's interesting how the song has taken on a completely different meaning than it originally had. On one hand, it's almost a church hymn to some. On another, it's a song about unstoppable team spirit. In "Carousel," it's sung to cheer up a young girl whose low-life boyfriend abuses her, gets her pregnant, and then commits suicide after a failed attempted robbery. Yikes! Opera singer Renee Fleming sang it at the 2009 Obama inaguration.
You'll never walk alone...is the meaning and the message. You can think about that for the rest of your life and it will take on new meaning each time it comes to mind.
I've heard this song for over 50 years and it has always been relevant.
Her husband just died, and you expect her to sing?

This is the the best version of the song, hands down. Rogers and Hammestein to perfection. :)

There are so many wonderful covers of this song, but none of them are as soulful or heart-felt as this one.
