Why do I find it amusing that Rei is a miko, brunette, overprotective to her friends and loved ones, and seeming to have blonde girls like Minako and Usagi as her closest friends, like another yuri anime character with that same description albeit in a more perverted, open, yandere, and desperate way, Chikane Himemiya from the anime Kannazuki no Miko? Just proves to me that this series is the mother of anime female character archetypes, especially the one I just mentioned. XP

@xDangerousDisasterx err...that's not a sex politics book, is a book of the female theater in Japan the Takarazuka Revue, of which Takeuchi-sensei was a fan of and based Haruka and Michiru on the actresses of that theater.

The Mustache girl on the cover is an Otokoyaku (male role player). Rei might be bisexual for many reasons but not for owing such a book. 90% of the Takarazuka's audience is married women in their forties with kids

The books Title say: 少女歌劇団 (shoujo Kagekidan) which means Female Opera Theater and it was also the first name of Takrazuka revue a very long time ago which changed to the current name on '30s or so. Takarazuka Revue is a theater where young women play all roles and the audience gets really infatuated by the male role players.

@makazeharuka This doesn't EXACTLY disprove anything. Being married doesn't automatically make someone heterosexual, especially not in Asian countries. (There are reports of lesbians and gays agreeing to marry and have children together simply to make their parents happy.)

But yeah, Rei isn't automatically bisexual or homosexual because she likes that group... though it'd be cool if she was!

Though my point is that Rei can be gay or bi for 1000s other reasons than watching a single sex Theatrical troupe and fangirling over a male role player. As a fan of Takarazuka what you get from that art has no sexual tendencies. Sure they are amazingly beautiful and sexy but they wake up the mother instinct in you more than anything else. Its a strange fandom and hardly non-fan get it.

It's really because I'm a yuri fanboy. I don't really have anything against Mamoru (although I've heard he becomes kind of an ass in later seasons, though that's only partially his fault), but if he and Usagi rule this planet a millennium or so from now, that doesn't mean anything to me, they could be married for solely that purpose and nothing else. idk, I'd prefer not to ship in this series until I've seen enough of it. And look at it like this: Mamoru and Usagi rarely indicate they have any of the same interests and literally fell in love because of predestination. Rei and Usagi actually had their relationship develop over many years and slowly become friends. Which has more depth, hmm? XD

@aheart4kris heh... I see what you're saying, but the truth is none of them are gay. Within the group of 5, Ami and Makoto are probably the closest friends with each other (sort of like Usagi and Rei are in the early seasons, though Rei and Minako hang out together more later)

Ami knows that Makoto isn't gay and she's embarrassed and upset that people were talking about Makoto like that behind her back.

Makoto wasn't in love with Haruka... she wanted to be like Haruka, she idolized her. It's comparable to a young boy having posters of a favorite athlete, playing the same sports, wanting his life to become like his idol's life. It's NOT because he wants a romantic relationship with the sports star.

It is funny though how some scenes make Ami and Mako look a bit strange. Mako's embarrassed stare at Ami's butt when she trips and falls... the two of them ballroom dancing together in SuperS...

@aurora990 well... I wouldn't say that it doesn't make sense. It's quite possible for two people to have a very close relationship but have no sexual attraction towards each other. Some examples would be the hobbits from Lord of the Rings (gay jokes were made about them too), or JD and Turk from Scrubs.

Though it's much more common for this relationship to happen with girls than with guys... they're more comfortable with getting that close to someone and having a sisterly relationship.
