You get a good idea of what happened here, but in the theatre it was absolutely STUNNING!
Remember that this is a very EXPENSIVE opera to put on. It's actually 3 separate operas with three big (different) casts. The scale was unbelievable! The barge in the first act looked like an aircraft carrier. One reviewer said that Buoso Donati's bedroom looked like you could land a 747 in it!
- There's the whole of Florence spread out before our very eyes!!
Seeing it on the screen is not the same thing. One is used to scene changes in movies. But think what that COST!! That production cost millions of dollars. you could see every penny on the stage. It was totally unforgettable!
After Schichi throws out the relatives, there's just a 2 minute little Soprano/Tenor duet and a short speech.
Imagine our wonder, then, when everything suddenly went blank and the whole stage suddenly started sinking! Sowly some statues come into view then a beautiful terrace. OK! we think, Great! But no. It keeps coming down and slowly we see a beautiful Florentine garden. Then - just when we're thinking: "You know, they could have shown a view of Florence" - BANG!!
The Met at its finest. A brilliant afternoon in the house. All three opera were terrific. Bravi tutti!

bellissima opera, ma perchè i registi la ambientano sempre a fine ottocento?
