love this look. I am a black woman and on occasion have worn my hair covered with the same sock bun. I have had a hard time finding a variety on nice scarves that don't have to much slip.
Ha, I've been tying mine too tight and it does slide off! I thought that if I made it tighter it would stay on better (or that I just had a funny shaped head) :P I'm new to this headscarf thing- I'm atheist and really just do it when I don't have time to wash my hair. Thanks for the helpful video!
@sadpandaa Your welcome! Another trick is to wear an under hijab underneath, or just another scarf or headband that the top scarf can catch on. You can also wear a barrette or clippie at your hairline then take a straight pin and straight pin through the scarf, then through your hair, out through the scarf (if you know what I mean) right in front of the barrette/clippie. The straight pin will catch on the barrier in your hair and stop the scarf from sliding back.
I am Christian and i also wear a tichel, i have been wearing for awhile but didn't know what it was called! thanks for the video i can now tie it a whole lot easier lol!
I'm an agnostic too (from a Muslim background), I've never covered my hair, and don't plan on, but I just wanted to say that I have an immense respect for you!
@moshe456 Not just Orthodox Jews. I am a conservative Jewish woman, and I wear them often. By saying she is Agnostic, she most likely means that she is a Jewish agnostic. Either she was Jewish, and became agnostic, or Her Jewish parents raised her, and now she isn't as faithful, or something like that......
You can buy Tichels almost anywhere. I got my favorite one at walmart. You CAN go to zaramart.com for high quality Israeli & Jewish goods shipped directly to your door.
I just ran across this video, and I am Muslim. this idea would work as an underscarf for a uslim woman to gather the hair before wrapping a hijab. this style could even be good for "bad hair days" or when you want to keep your hair out of the way of some task you are doing and also keep it clean. fyi I buy alot of my hijabs at WalMart or Target as well as online, and also found a cute green scarf at a local store called Zumi. I also hit thrift stores and find very pretty scarves.
yeh im an atheist and i like to wear hijab at car coz of sun light in place where i am is to strong to damage my skin i love your hair tie styles too keep it up
Thank You! My cousin has breast cancer and is looking for ways to cover her newly shorn head that has some semblence of feminity and that don't involve a baseball cap. This is beautiful and perfect for her, can't wait to share it.
Hey girls! =) I'm also Christian. For a long time now, I feel that God has been speaking to me on the subject of modesty, and I feel so happy to see other non-Muslims that share in the same views of modesty!. I believe its a beautiful thing for a woman to cover herself. And it gives us a sense of unity as women as well because we all have something in common, no matter what the underlying reasons are. =)
I cover but I don't get strange stares. Maybe I'm just not paying attention. However, there are a lot of Russian women around that cover with tulle (u know what I mean? really see-through fabric?), and mennonites too, so maybe people around here are just used to it. I don't look Russian, muslim, or mennonite when I go out----I just look like me!
Best hair covering video ever. I wear this almost every day since I learned it here, sometimes just as it is and sometimes under "big hijab". It is secure enough for sport with a jersey scarf. No sharp pins. :) Thank you for posting.
i usually wear it like you do but i cover my ears or live the two ends of fabric hanging. i am a christian but i love to cover my hear it makes me feel more secure and protected i don't know why lol .people stare all the time but i really don't care as long as i feel comfort ,i will wear it .
I've started to wear my hair like this for work, and I have noticed a great many stares from people at work and when I'm out shopping. I really don't care. I just do it for fashion and comfort, but I know what you mean, this style is out of the norm and I enjoy that aspect...I usually match my eyeshadow to match the scarf I'm wearing. Today I wore bright pink...
Do you get strange stares on the street? lol. I've always been curious- Do Jewish and Muslim women find it offensive or strange for women of different faiths to wear a head covering in this manner? I do so occasionally for the style. I'm agnostic too. :)
its not offensive at all to me, i'm muslim. but i do find it a little weird that not all the hair is covered. if your gonna cover most of your hair, why not go the extra mile to be a little more modest. any who i appauld the maker of this video and any other women who covers, for we are truly free from the chains of nakedness this world wants us to be in. its truly awful lol....its nice to see non muslims cover its like whooop whoop! lol....
@lostgrl06 As a non-muslim who covers with a similar headcovering, I push the head cover back a little bit. Most people realize that this is not a hijab that belongs to a muslim. However, the common assumption is not that I'm Jewish (I'm not either) or being modest, but that I'm a cancer patient. I feel badly for upsetting many people who see me as a young woman undergoing chemo. I find that most people do not make this assumption when my hairline is visible.
I've actually found that I get more stares with a bonnet than I do with a head scarf! When one muslimah ask me if I was muslim and when she found out I wasn't she was just curious as to why I covered, then she said she was impressed. More often than not they respect your decision to cover despite not being of their faith. They think it is extraordinary that women who are not encouraged to cover by faith would cover because of personal beliefs. I've encountered ots of mutual respect!
@QueenSemiramis I'm Jewish, a convert to conservative, have been for almost 2 years now. I don't find it weird when people of other faiths do it. I used to wear one to bed so my hair stayed in one place, now I wear it out in public all the time. If I see a person wearing one, I wonder if they are Jewish or Muslim, or not, but I don't say or ask anything.
I usualy wear a little cotton head band or cap under my tichel. I find it more comfortable because I never feel that the whole thing wants to slide off.
Its so nice to see so many ladies, regardless of religion, making the choice to dress modestly and chosing not to conform to the pressures of society. G-d bless you all!
Just practice. I like to practice with different sizes of scarves, in different shapes, so that I can get used to it. The trick is to put your hair up, and then pin the cloth to your head before you twist the ends. Otherwise it will pull back on your head significantly. Also, like she said, don't start off with it really tight, because that makes it slip. I bet you look just as beautiful with it as she does. :) Good luck!
It is! My hair was extremely short (just below chin length) at the time of recording, though, so that made it more difficult. There wasn't much of a ponytail to use as a base.
i love the tichel, and i am christian, not jewish or muslim. i want to begin wearing the tichel, but where can i find the material to do so? can u find such fabirc at Walmart, or should i go to a fabric store?
I actually just buy mine. There are many great places to buy them for cheap, e-bay, Modest World, pretty much all over the net. You can use tichels, but you can also use a hijab and then tie it like a tichel. The scarf I'm using in this tutorial is actually sold as a hijab! Hijab are usually cheaper. You can also make your own if you please, all you need is a rectangle or square of fabric of your choice. Use any you like! Though, a fabric that is a little rough and catches hair will stay better.
hey ! erm i wear head scarf and it helps if you get the head sock on first!its a kind of like a cotton jersey tight socks that i get from hijab shop !and when you take your tichel or hijab and tie it it stays on even if i bang by head non stop on a rock song !:) dont imagine that!lol
Oh! You can find fabric everywhere. I love going to the second-hand stores because they always seem to have beautiful scarves for very cheap. I went a couple days ago and landed about 10 colorful, beautiful scarves! Long and thinner (not too thin but not a giant square either) is best for this style, square is better when you want a more traditional hijabi look. BTW I am Catholic, so I feel you on the covering bit. :)
"A tutorial on how to tie your headscarf. I'm agnostic, so, I don't cover all of my hair. If you want to be "correct", please make sure that you cover your ears in order to cover all hair."
Or what you can do with the tails is twist them like you do then criss cross them across the front of your head, at the crown, and bring them back around that will keep it tight around your forehead. And then do what you do at the end.
love this look. I am a black woman and on occasion have worn my hair covered with the same sock bun. I have had a hard time finding a variety on nice scarves that don't have to much slip.
