The baths in SF didn't starting closing until 1984, three years after the epidemic started. 3 years because public health wanted gay support to close them and the gay community wasn't interested until it was too late. Read the book, Shilts pages 446-447.

@moonrunrs It's just too simplistic to say that it's solely the responsibility of gay people for spreading the virus. It wasn't even known how the virus was spread or that it even was a virus until it was identified in 1984. Until then there were on scientific hunches as to how it was spread and why. Telling a group of already marginalized people to behave a certain way based on a hunch is not particular good public health practice. The blame is on gay men, but not entirely.

hemophilia has nothing to do with red cells or white cells... it a clotting disorder.. we need clotting factors for blood to clot ..hemophilia is a defeciency of clotting factor 7 or 8 .. its a genetic disorder..makes you bruise and bleed..blood transfusions used to provide these extra clotting factors.. so in those days these blood transfusions would transmit this virus ..and since hemophiliacs would get more blood transfusions than anybody else they d get HIV

You all should watch the documentary "The River" which explains the origin of the HIV virus and its mutation from SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus)-ie. chimps. HUNDREDS of chimps were captured, caged and slaughtered to harvest their organs (kidneys-I think) by a scientist who used them to grow a vaccine, which he tested on thousands of Africans in the area where AIDS 1st showed up. He was competing w/ another scientist for the vaccine contract. Everything goes back to love of money, & secrets.

@7beers That doesn't prove anything. Lots of doctors and scientists still believe drugs are a contributing factor to AIDS. Of course the CDC wanted AIDS to be a contagious viral disease. It helps them justify their existence, and it benefits drug makers and germ researchers.

KS is common in gay men who snort poppers and pneumonia is common in heroin addicts regardless of HIV status. HIV must be very smart to cause risk-group specific diseases.

Hemophiliac deaths from AIDS only increased after testing was introduced and AZT was approved as a treatment. Many of them were terrorized by the diagnosis, took the toxic AZT, and died (Ryan White is a prime example). AZT helped AIDS become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The immune system is WHITE blood cells. In other words, Hemophiliacs have trouble getting oxygen to their cells and removing carbon dioxide from them, not in fighting disease.

@tranurse Nonsense. There are no "side" effect from AZT. The only effect of AZT is to poison the body by destroying t-cells, bone marrow and organs. Using AZT to kill HIV is like using a nuclear bomb to kill a rabbit. You take everything else down with it. The long-term HIV "survivors" all have in common that they did not listen to people like you and take the huge doses of AZT that would have killed them in a few years.

AIDS was present among heteros early on. It did not spread as fast because the nature of hetero sex involves less blood and therefore, less exposure to HIV. Homosexual sex involves more exposure to the virus because small skin tears are much more common in anal sex so the virus is spread easier. This is not prejudice, it is biology.

You are correct. Unfortunately the best prevention is manogamy. Any individuals, gay or straight, that do not practice manogamy are very at risk for an STD. I know a manogamous gay couple and pratically all of their friends died of AIDS but they are both healthy.
