  • A terrible performance of this Brahms rhapsody. Just compare Gould's performance of this rhapsody with that of Martha Argerich to realise how bad this is.

  • Muchisimas gracias por subir al Gould aqui.

  • You may want to spell Rhapsody correctly.

  • Pogorelich rules here

  • I'm an admirer of Gould's, but there's nothing here I like.

I particularly find the tempi wrong headed.

It seems almost as bad as his Mozart recordings.

He believed it was all-important to take a fresh approach to pieces.

Why turn out an interpretation whose like has been heard so often that one is inwardly deaf to it?

Fine. But this is a desecration. Above all, more rubato needed. A sewing machine can not play Brahms.

    My opinion, anyway.

  • @rubestuh A heathen can't play Brahms either.

  • @rubestuh I'm inclined to agree with you on this case but I prefer to keep this music in mind just the same. Gould may have not done anything to contribute to the freshness of this piece and to record what others may have already done is somewhat an enigma to me. I had the impression that he wasn't much into the Classical and Romantic periods, that his true passion lies in the Baroque era which was the least recorded music in his time. I may be wrong but this is what i think.

  • @tuberobotto Actually, I think his interests were broader than many people realize. He played a lot of 20th century repertoire ... Hindemith, Schoenberg and Grieg, for example ... recorded several Beethoven sonatas and the five piano concertos, and even once turned in an (execrable) recording of one of the Chopin sonatas. And then of course, he did record a lot of Baroque music. When he hits it, he really does; when he misses, it's by a mile.

  • I love Glenn. My only negative observation is that sometimes he seems to separate the voices too much, which works great on Bach, but less so for other composers. Anyone else think so? I still enjoy his performances, though, no matter the genre.

  • ah

  • Wow amazing

  • His treatment of the B flat major chords at 0:58 is Gould at his best—unorthodox, counterintuitive, yet oddly natural-sounding. In so doing he brings out Brahms at his best: ironic, playful, yet restless and anxious.

  • @schmetterlink He seems to be the only one that I've heard who really thinks through the counterpoint and voicing in this piece - he gets it right where it is necessary in order to also bring out these little touches like the one you mention.

  • absolutely great

  • You may want to spell " Rhapsodies" correctly. One of my favorite recordings.

  • As this wonderful recording came to its end, a Disney commercial, at three times the volume of this video, assaulted my ears (headphones) with a fake-enthusiastic professional female voice. I feel abused, but as always lately unsure of how either to complain or avoid further abuses. It would be nice if people who have no souls could refrain from advertising.

  • never heard brahms with such bollocks

  • Nobody doubts that Glenn Gould is a genius. But the point where he is different from common geniuses is that his interpretation does not lose the newness at all after the times either.

  • @trustiful I couldn't disagree more, I think this is the best performance of this I've heard, and I don't hear any evidence of unwanted stacatto. Could you give an example where you hear this?

  • @EddyGuido91 Hai pienamente ragione. Fino a qualche settimana fa odiavo Glenn Gould, ma comincio a rivalutarlo.
