The smell coming from the cage is probably from the bars and bedding, it looks like the game is only galzenized (bare) and not powder or PVC coated, and galvenized wire absorbs smells a lot.
As well, the levels would be covered with something a bit more absorbent like terrycloth sewn to a layer of fleece. :)
