Actually she does. Liza commits suicide by jumping into the Neva. She's definitely one of the most foolish characters in all of opera. And Yeletsky is one of the most eligible bachelors in all of opera. And sung by Hvorostovsky...indeed he's perfection.

Those are Tchaikovsky's brother words. He made the libretto to this opera, although the original work was from Puschkin
