  • Take us homel...

  • That is the voice of a fucking angel. Wow. BTW, it's '1970s' not '1917'. Either way, good shit. Wish I could still smoke pot.

  • Just when you thought they couldn't write a new spiritual , Neil does a classic

  • Great Combo

  • They changed the lyrics: Young sings "Look at Mother Nature on the run

In the nineteen seventies." Prelude sings "Look at Mother Nature on the run

    In the nineteen sevenTEEN"

    1970s or 1917.

When I first heard their version, I thought it was about a First World War battle until I heard Young's version later.

  • Good job ! Please check out our Chor Version of the Song After the Goldrush on my channel . Over 200 Singer sang the Song on our Rock Chor Kaiserslautern Concert Thank you !

  • Haven't heard this version since I was about five years old. Beautiful.

  • Beautiful

  • I remember this version so very clearly from my teenage years. How lovely to hear it again.

  • I am fairly certain the group was named TRILOGY before becoming prelude and singing this beautiful song

  • I am fairly certain the group was named TRIO before becoming prelude and singing this beautiful song

  • I had the artwork on my wall listening to Neil's version... a long time ago.

    Where is "TRIO" these days.

The young ones would never believe who they were.

  • Listening to it again now and all the hairs on the back of my neck and arms are standing on end! Takes a really beautiful song and singer to do that. Glad Neil Young put it together but HATE his version of it.

  • It's definitely Prelude and I used to see them every night on my local television (Border in Cumbria) between the news and weather, and fell in love with it. The main girl singer was a very pretty girl with chin length straight hair and I think she was joined by two guys though I'll stand corrected on that as my memory often fails me. They always sang it live every night 'cos they were dressed differently and little nuances in their singing gave away the fact. It's a song I've always loved.

  • I remember listening to this when I lived in Sarnia Ontario on CHOK radio. I was frozen in amazement. All I could do was close the door and crank it!!

  • The group is NOT Trio, like that twerp said, it is by Prelude....i,ve still got the original 7 inch i bought in 1974!.......some idiots just haven`t got a clue have they!

  • WOW

  • Acapella songs don't usually do well. Prelude hit #22 in Billboard, 11-30-74. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • They just don't make lovely three part harmonies like this anymore! Great rendition!

  • beatiful song! I ALWAYS LISTENING WITH THIS MUSIC (neil young ) since my elementary days, this is a prophetic song !

  • Sounds like Prelude on the 45 I have.

  • FYI: The group is NOT Prelude! It is TRIO (Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt). Very beautiful rendition, and video!

  • @ThePikanii

    Its Prelude.

  • @ThePikanii FYI you're wrong. One of many reasons: the Prelude cover has the line "and I felt like getting high", which TRIO replaces with "and I felt I could cry". Typical American censorship.

  • @ThePikanii no its prelude, got the original, cannot be beaten!

    !!

  • @59eltel Very well, I stand corrected! Beautiful song.

  • FYI: The group is NOT Prelude! It is TRIO (Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt)

  • I always feel transended after hearing this song. I feel like angels have lifted me up for a brief moment then lightly touched down to earth & I've been shown grace.

  • I enjoy this song every time I hear it.

  • Neil Young's voice is like a cat being murdered. His songwriting is brilliant, he cannot fucking sing.

  • @BigMapleFishThing Agree! though I've heard some dead catss that sound better :)

  • love this version :)

  • SUCH A GREAT SONG!!

  • I first heard this song at an exhibition at Olimpia, London, in 1979. They were using it to demonstrate a new idea Digital Recording, using betamax tape on the video band. The result was so impacting that i spant years trying to track the song and the groupdown.

  • This song used to play on oldies radio and I'd wonder who it was by...perfect visuals to go with, thanks.

  • auto tune

  • I hope it was a typo..."one of the few covers that is considerably better than the original" ?????!!!!!!! Wow. I pity you. Do you like Raffi better than Bob Dylan too? Lame.

  • One of the few covers that is considerably better than the original (Neil Young, great songwriter, awful singer). Beautiful

  • @gazzo45 fool no one can sing this better than neil

  • I found it! After years and years and years of not having a clue who did this and not being able to remember any lyrics, I fuckin' found it! ^_^

  • WOW

  • This one gives me chills.

  • Cant beat a decent song in Acapella :)

  • that brings back a load of good memories

  • soothing and captivating - beauiful and a little prophetic?

  • This recording is too beatiful for words!

  • Timeless. Neil Young is a genius, and this fine group shows us why....

  • are those all picture are cross-stitch? reply pls..

  • it's still one of my favorits. chilling song great

  • I still hold a remembrance of an aura i once created in my mind repeating this song over and over again in my mind. Back then i was so desperate that i wanted to die and be taken to a "new home in the sky" myself. it almost worked out, and i got real close. But now I am glad that i´m still alive and able to listen to this beautiful work of art, over and over whenever i want to, thinking positively, and grateful that i´m alive.

  • @stammee "an aura"? L-L! Do you still use that pahtetic line?

  • @OHLeeRedux "aura" is a medical term about a pre-epileptic stadium shortly before the collapse. i almost died...

  • the best version of this song by a mile

  • This song first hit the airwaves in August of 1975. It was on their self-named debut album : Prelude. Although this is the only song that got airplay, the entire album was excellent. Especially so was the fourth cut on side one : " Lady From A Small Town " I lost my copy in ' 84 and have been trying to locate another for over twenty years.

If anyone out there has this album on vinyl or cassette ( I don't think it went to CD ) , please...?

  • Outstanding Tune

  • I heard this when it first came out - 1973 I think it was (give or take a couple of years - the memory gets foggy after a while!)

  • Awesomw! Saw these guys at the Red Lion in Trimdon and at The Hope Inn in sedgefield. Brilliant live show.

  • nothing to with god a tanlent gourp who could sing and forever in my life what voiceses

  • WOW! WOW! WOW! Incredible artwork! :-D

From flower children to Star children. I love it!

  • will the REPUBLICAN death cult let us go ??

  • @sistersdaddy It's a slap in the face real Republicans that most of the present ones even call themselves Republicans. Death Cult is right. Same with Democrats.

  • An inspiring adaptation, in a cappela no less! The illustrations echo this version well. Love the one of Satan expelled from his first estate.

  • Saw Prelude do this last night....they are like a good wine, they just get better with age.

  • I don't really care for this rendition, not to say its bad... I guess it just doesn't sound right to me, not without Neil singing.

  • Anyone who thinks Neil young did this song any justice.....Must like hearing 2 cats fighting...This version was brought to my ears in High School...Our show choir did it and recieved a Standing Ovation.

  • @rjuhl1 Anyone can sing, but only an artist could have written such a poetic song.

  • This takes me back to a bad time, when this piece of beauty stood out simple and clear. It is Neil Young's composition and a good song amongst his many, but Prelude's performance made it an absolute affirmation even though they're singing a song of doubt.

  • Prelude? Neil Young? Not quite sure... !!!!

  • @lukey12 Get a grip pottymouth, they're both good.

  • @lukey12 idiot!!!!!! grow up

  • I have been searching for this song for 30 years!!!!!!!!! tytytytytytytytytyty

  • @nini1957 You have arrived.

  • I've always loved this from the very first time I heard it back in the 1970's...

  • thanks so much!

  • speechless.......

  • 0:34 "In the 19-Seven-*teen*.??!! - Sounds like what they sing... never noticed it before. (As if to remove any hint of political controversy? that might get the wanna'-be-a-hit song banned on some stations?...)

IMO, unless it's high resolution images, they would actually come off better if they were STILL, instead of the slow (more artful) tracking or panning. ...I do like some of the artwork.

  • Wonder who came up with the idea to do it acapella? Prelude, or their producer, Fritz Fryer? Anyway, it hit #22 in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • I have loved this song from the first time a heard it. This is a beautiful version of it. Very nicely done!

  • glad top see john pitre's art on here. i used to have a poster of his "overpopulation".

  • love love love it!

  • This is a good cover of a beautiful song. But I don't know why Neil Young won't allow his songs on You Tube. Shame on you Neil, this was one of your best songs. Can't find any Young songs from Dejavu, the only song on You Tube from that album is Woodstock.

  • Neil Young Can Never Die!!

  • without doubt the best version of this song by far neil is a fantastic artist but this is sung better by prelude

  • The band I played with many years ago was on the same bill as Prelude. We were blown away with their superb harmonies!

  • I can verify this is Prelude.

  • Touches my soul....goosepimples all over...I am in awe...of such voices... thankyou so much.....

  • I heard this version before any other and it still haunts me, it is wonderfull, i have sung it to my children who are all grown up now and they all love it as much as me

  • Oh my god! This song is BEAUTIFUL!!!

It's so captivating and soulful -- what a wonderful piece.

Short but so sweet -- thank you for posting it!

  • @Erredmek I hold a very strong resemblance of an aura i once created thinking about death repeating this song in my mind over and over again. back then i was so desperate that i wanted to die myself. it almost worked out. now, i am glad that i am alive and still able to listen to this beautiful work of art as many times as i want to.

  • My mom used to play the album this was on when I was little. I just heard the song for the first time in like twenty years, and time just rolled back. Every time she played it, This song made me cry. It still holds the same power over me. It's simply beautiful. Combining it with visuals by John Pitre was pure genus. I clicked favorite, and gave you five stars. Thank you very much!

  • Prelude's version of this is incredible, so much better than Neil Young's, great fan of him that I am.

    Wonderful artwork, glorious music.

  • haunting

  • Awesome awesome! Whats left to say? Beauty.....

  • I'm pretty sure Dean Stockwell wrote this for a project he was working with Neil on. At least those were his words...

  • The picture at 1:11 is so amazing.

  • Absolutely the best rendition of this song ever. I remember having this version back in the 1970's on a variety album of different artists and songs. Listened to it many times. You put together great art work to accompany it. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks for posting... mtrott1

  • I heard this version before Neil's, and thought his version was a parody - thin tenor, and that horrible French horn solo...

  • Prelude was an awesome band.

  • I was searching for the Roche sisters and I came across this. Thanks

  • i played this as a disc jockey somwhere betw '78 and 87. i remember it didnt exactly blow the lid off the charts and i never could figure out why. at least our station made it a local favorite and to this day it is still a fav of mine. very nice piece of work!

  • sry but i don't like it

  • Yeah this was the hit version, by Prelude - just WOW!!!

  • I own 3 of John Pitre's original posters that I bought in the 70's...one of them is Restrictions...which you featured in this video.

Another one I have hanging right next to me...A New Dawn.

    Thank you for this

  • No comment, just beautiful!

    Greez from Germany :)

  • Lovely version - has anyone still got a copy of the Joan Armatrading release?

  • Comment removed

  • this is good

  • Stay clear of the Dolly Parton version. Pretentious crap it is. They changed it from 'getting high' to ' I felt like I could cry." God that's retarded. What do they think they're going to do; encourage drug use? Gag.

  • Like I said before, a LOVELY song with beautiful three part harmony!!

  • I bought this 45 when I was just a kid. I have always loved this song. It's great to see it here on youtube.

  • Lovely! Simply lovely!

  • wauw, it's almost like these pictures were painted for the song

  • The definitive a capella version is by the Kings Singers on their "Six" CD from 2004Just listen to that and get blown away !

  • wonderful, loved the pics

  • Absolutely heart-stoppingly stunning. This never fails to make my spine light up and tears spring to my eyes... and the artwork is sensational. Beautiful video... well done you... I love it... more please! xoxoxo Jay xoxoxo

  • unbeatable

  • Nana Mouskouri at her best!!

  • you need to make this with the fill song

  • only just come accross this, How haunting and yes the artwork is awesome

  • This song is so beautiful! The harmony is so soothing. They don't make them like this anymore! I remember my father playing their LP over and over again,

  • Bloody Lovely!...........

  • I know I have this song, sung by this same group - but it is not on a Prelude CD; it is played, as the ending song on a totally unrelated CD. Can anybody tell me what this CD might be? It's driving me crazy....

  • it is on a cd I bought from Preludes website...last I heard still doing gigs

  • What memories!! I still have this on the original vinyl 45....Somewhere lol

  • I miss that that vinyl. Only seen it once back in the late 70s.

  • you forgot to add this was Prelude 1973 Dawn Records/ they were Irene Hume/Brian Hume/ Ian Vardy . They made 5 albums

  • Beautiful, a gem! Thank you.

  • Love the song, but the artwork is pretty amazing :O

  • This reminds me of my childhood. Mom would always play this and sing along. I knew the lyrics by the time I was 3, I think. Lol! Now I sing it and play it for my kids and they know the lyrics, too. Very cool art, btw.

  • I sing it to my son now. This and Father & Son by Cat

  • God, this blows away the cobwebs doesn't it?. I was nine when it was released and still remember being stunned into silence when it played on the radio at my parents dress factory in South London. Beautiful.

  • Listen to the words 1917 makes more sense than 1970 !

  • brings back memories of good days

  • It WAS "1970s." Oops!

  • Comment removed

  • OMG I remember recording this off the radio in about 1993 (long before the pirate bay or mininova) how freakin amazing is this song?!!

  • Lead vocals by Irene Hume of Prelude. They played at a folk club called The Watermill in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire - I think in 1973. Irene bought me a pint of Theakstons Old Peculier!

  • Neil often sings the mother nature line as "...in the twenty-first century". Certainly true.

  • This is beautiful, except for the wonky lyrics.

  • Yo, great sound, but it's "1970s" not "1917"...

  • GeoffreyHale: 0:38 It does say 1917.

  • Comment removed

  • GeoffreyHale, you are correct in this, Prelude's cover version. And as to changing the form and message from Neil's original lyrics, so be it. I believe it gives much more coherence to the song than Neil's rendition constantly being changed (i.e. : "the 21st Century"). It also has much more meaning to me personally beginning with "talking about a Queen"(I descend from European Aristocracy);"lying in a burned-out basement - hoping for a replacement"(my Grandfather did at Chateau-Thierry in 1918).

  • @impassee well said I always believed this was WWI related.

  • What the heck kind of psychadelica is this ? ! ? ! SPLENDID :}

  • I remember listening to this as a young man and it has always stuck with me, some song.

  • one of the radio persional from my area likes this song and i lke it too

  • Beautiful version of a lovely song. Thank you for posting it.

  • Comment removed

  • 1875? Neil was only 6 at the time!

  • Thanks to Neil Young , Prelude , the artist John Pitre that paited these beautiful paintings, and thank you for posting this .

    Thank you .

  • I Love this song !!! But this one needs to be longer. It Ends WAY too soom !!!

  • FAROUT, just wonderful

  • I LOVE this I have a vinyl 45 copy & yes it is by Prelude. WONDERFUL ART too. Thank you <3

  • this is by Prelude & I have a vinyl 45 copy.

  • i have been trying to find this track for years did not no the name of it chills me out so much who did it origanaly was it prelude?

  • it was Prelude, I remember me and my pals trying to copy them in the school music room! good memories! lol! anyway its on an album called acoustic moods with some other good stuff from that era!

  • That Song...Those lyrics...so beautiful, just sublime. And those visuals...the art just ...fits. and it is an extraordinary body of work. but, listen... if we humans trash this planet (which looks like a given at this point, does anybody really think we deserve ANOTHER planet to rip all to hell? just curious.

  • Extraordinary piece. Just love it.

  • The piece at 1:30 is called "Humanity".

  • Absolutely stunning piece. Thankyou.

  • Can someone please tell me the name of the piece at 1:30?

  • Always loved this song but never knew the actual story behind the lyrics. Thank you to everyone who revealed it.

Incidentally, didn't they do a song called 'Follow You Down'? I have a recording of a song mentioning this lyric done by a female of similar vocal. I found it on a tape I had borrowed from a friend of mine but there was no tracklisting. It begins 'We were together, relaxing in love, sunny shine weather more than enough' if that's a help.

  • The song is "Follow Me Down" on the Prelude 'After the Gold Rush' album...i have the old vinyl. Saw a new CD of it on Amazon for $130...damn!

  • Thank you for this, my friend.

  • I think its all been said...Excellent thanks for the posting

  • They sing nineteen seventeen instead of nineteen seventies. Beautiful cover to the song.

  • 'BleedBNG' ~ Thankyou for clarifying the date that also gives credence to the WW 1 connection . I thought it was my age and hearing that were at fault .

  • There's something about this song that touches a raw nerve and brings tears to my eyes, must be going soft.

  • so beautiful
