  • I thank you for this so unforgettable video. Regards, Sergio.

  • an excellent soprano

  • im so bummed that she passed away in 1993. she has one of the best voices ive ever heard. and she has so much control and awesome technic! she is the queen of sopranos.

  • Perfect. What else can you say?

  • Exultate, jubilate,

    O vos animae beatae

    exsultate, jubilate,

    dulcia cantica canendo;

    cantui vestro respondendo

    psallant aethera cum me.

Tu virginum corona, tu nobis pacem dona, tu consolare affectus, unde suspirat cor. Alleluja.
  • I love the way her face lights up when she begins the Alleluia. She and Lynne Dawson are the most perfect singers without question.

  • Great performance! Maybe the best rendition of "Exsultate, jubilate".

  • Thanks so much for posting this. It is sublime.

  • A musical gem!

  • Exquisite singing-much closer to the Bel Canto era

  • bernstein swings! 4:00

  • I just feel the need to comply with everyone else here. This is some of the best singing I've ever heard.

  • astounding Auger

  • She's pure elegance

  • She was absolutely unraveled in Handel - as Angelica in Orlando with Hogwood. She was a genius, and one can only wonder WHY she shared the fate of Kathleen Ferrier and Lorraine Hunt...

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • I write the same once again - with pleasure: I never heard such a excellent interpretation as from the wonderful, unique, fantastic Arleen Auger.

I think Mozart has composed it for her, only for her. Thank you so much for sharing these great videos.

  • ...and to think this was written for a castrato two centuries ago, give or take a few decades.

  • What a treat! Two Olympians. Mozart would approve.

  • The most nearly perfect singer I've ever heard.

  • My god. This is how Nozart should be sung.

  • Such a delicate, sweet voice. It's a shame she's gone.

  • Arleen Auger is heavenly perfection.

After Ms. Auger sang the "Et incarnatus est" section of the Mass (also on this program, but not shown here) Maestro Bernstein stepped down and kissed her throat, then said, "Now I can die a happy man. I have finally heard Mozart sung as he surely intended."

  • Heavenly music sung by a superb singer! TY!

Imbarazzante comportamento! Mille appalusi da parte mia agli immortali Arleen e Bernstein!

  • Bellissimo, eccezionale, superba esecuzione, bravissimi lei e lui!

  • Che perfezione! E che classe! Sia lei sia lui!

  • why was there ZERO applause?

  • They are in church in Munich!

  • I'm pretty sure that's not the reason.

  • Wo? Theatinerkirche?

  • This is absolute perfection. Amazing! What a clear voice, what a control, it is incredible. I'm sure Mozart would have wanted it to be this way. It is incredible.

  • Sheer and utter perfection, at one with the music. I have enjoyed Dame Kiri's rendition, puzzled over Ms.Fleming's and shuddered at Ms. Bartoli's mannerisms which overtook the music. If there is a chorus of angels in heaven, surely it is lead by the serenely beautiful Arleen Auger and Lucia Popp.

  • @suzanneetmoi Precisely! I could not agree more!

  • @suzanneetmoi and may we add Elly Ameling and Barbara Bonney to the chorus?

  • @WestMaroon Ms. Bonney might object since she is very, very much alive!!!

  • @WestMaroon A bit late getting back. You must have taken me out of context. Saw Bonney quite recently in recital, and Ameling is also still living and in good health. Never indicated otherwise. Indeed all, including Auger, are alive and well in my music library.

  • Interesting lady to watch :]. Magnificent technique. Kind regards.

  • IShe was knwn as La Perfetta for a thousand reasons!

  • Is that really all you got out of this? Halfwit...

  • The simplicity and absolute candor with which she sang should be taken as lesson for all singers today. What an artist!

  • Thank-you for posting Joyces videos even though I am Her nephew I only got to see her perform once at the Passadena campus of ucla, she was a lot of fun to be around and I really miss her

  • Exceptionaly good, extremely delicate and elegant singing

  • The thing is - she knows all the way through that she will be able to confidently sing that climactic high note at the end, while all the other singers know they can't (confidently).

  • And to think that here she had already been diagnosed with brain cancer....sing to God/ about God...pray to God...

  • Oh, please. Stop bringing in your imaginations into every single frigging subject. I bet you assume Mozart was inspired by god in between his drunken night walks to write this.

  • I apologize; I didn't know you were such an expert that also was around Mozart when he composed this piece.

According to you all music that reflects and is inspired by 2000 years of Christianity has nothing to do with Christianity whatsoever.........useless to argue with you, enough said!

  • indeed - challanges give music another subtle and sometimes ironic pitch. definitely it is her commitment that shows through - knowing her personal circumstances gives yet another layer of backbone through which one can truely understand her spiritual and artistic commitment .

    Well said :)

  • The trill at the end of Tu virginum is straight from heaven.

  • Sublime, only from Mozart the divine.

  • Excellent esecution!!!

  • well almost 30

  • tears of joy streams from my eyes as i listen to this so beautiful--- what a universal sound--i am only 30 and i appreciate this beautiful woman and her contributions to music--God bless her spirit.

  • Isn't it sad, that both Lenny & Arleen are no longer with us,thank god for recordings, and filming.

BTW,as this looks as if it is in a cathedral, people are often not keen on applauding in such surroundings.

I wonder if this is St Stephens Cathedral in Vienna?

  • This is liturgical music. Applause for it is thus inappropriate.

  • just by listening to this motete anyone surrenders before the genius of genius ,long live mozart

  • Why there wasn't clapping?!!! :s

    I loved her!

  • maravilhosa!!!!! :)

  • bravissima....

  • This performance is as close to perfection as it will ever get. Beautiful. I can't stop listening to it.

  • Peaceful!

  • Beside Arleen who is wonderful I am very happy to see my idol Lenny-thank you very much

  • Her phrasing and tonal control of the runs is spectacular. Bravo!

  • : )

  • Maybe I'm ignorant, but what exactly does your comment mean?

  • it's a sidewise smiley...means she's fantastic, and Mozart is sublime...

  • agreed

  • She always looked so serene when she sang-an earthly angel, now in her rightful place-though a great loss for the musical community.

  • Arleen Auger was truely one of the greatest mozart sopranos, and a wonderfull lady

  • Spectacular collaboration & how lucky we are to have a record of it! This is not long before they both died, I believe.

  • Arleen Auger :

I always admired her voice and this is the first time i saw her singing ....there are no words ....we just have to be lucky we still can enjoy her voice by hearing and seeing...

I still remember the day when i heard she left our world...almost at the same time when Lucia Popp left our world.....

  • I have watched this clip 10+ times and every time I do, I am struck by how she sings this seemingly effortlessly. It is an amazing performance.

  • she's amazing! And the tempi are great! I'm doing this piece and I've had to fight for tempi even near this, haha. I love everything about how she does this! Her breath marks make total sense, which is so hard in this. (too bad it's in an 80s gown.)

  • I think she is the definite performer of the Exsultate Jubilate! My goodness i've never heard such each, purity of tone and not a single scoop! Brava la Diva! We miss you so much!

  • What a voice! Her recording of Constanze in "Abduction", with Karl Bohm conducting and with Reri Grist as Blonde, is absolutely perfect all the way through.

  • I hate the misconception that one shouldn't applaude in a church! How weird to have that awkward silence at the end - especially a piece like this. Was this a memorial to someone?? That would be the only explanation for me, although even then why not applaud as a show of appreceation?

  • I think it was in memory of Karajan. But you are right...normally this piece would have been applauded, I would think it would be wird otherwise. But it is long time ago so then people did not applaud in church (at least not in Sweden - weird though because I don't reckon the general Swede to be religious in any way nor traditional).

  • This was a live recording for the Album/CD that came out. It would make sense for the audience not to applaud. The record-makers would not want to have applause on the album. I'm sure that the musicians were informed of this from the start and the audience, too.

  • Brava Madama!

  • Wonderfull Awesome! Could only be Arleen Auger! Still miss her to bits!

  • Wonderful technique, breathing is hardly to be seen. One of the most beautiful voices ever. Just marvellous.

  • What a dream.

  • excellent breathing, excellent phrasing, excellent placement, excellent intonation . . . EXCELLENT TECHNIQUE!!!

  • So calmly sung and beautiful! She was wonderful! A lesson in singing from just watching her.

  • maravilhosa!!!!! :)

  • This is a taste of heaven, where I am sure we will find Mozart, Arleen and Leonard working together.

  • Barry, I share the same feeling in regards to them, who are two of my Angels of Voice...thank you for the apt identification. Ray.

  • April 1990 in the Baroque Basilica of Waldsassen in Bavaria. A beautiful singer and person in a beautiful place. I can't think of Arleen without thinking of the equally wonderful Lucia Popp - and vice versa. Both died in the same year (1993) at the same age and of the same affliction. A thousand pities.

  • And you can't forget Troyanos. She also died that same year.

  • So calm and strong at the same time. It seemed so easy all that demanding coloratura. I m a big fan of Arleen. She lives through her divine voice in her recordings.

  • "The Good die Young" :(

Bernstein is one of the best too.

  • sincerllyi i agree!she's perfect and addorable like the music she singed...

  • One of the best singers ever.

    Died MUCH to young!!!!!
