I was really hoping Dallas would have beaten NY this week so Atlanta could have made them wear their asses for hats the next week in the playoffs. We owe those bastards a few...
Robert Pennywell was the name of the Falcon LB that knocked out Staubach in this game, not Ray Pinny. The big point of this game was that Atlanta came in as a 14 point underdog, and it was their first season in the playoffs, having beaten the Eagles the previous week. Many teams had come into Texas Stadium and had their heads handed to them in the p-offs, and the so-called experts thought Atl would suffer a similar fate. The Falcons played them tough, led 20-13 at halftime, and only lost 27-20.
@6400az That's for sure, the Falcons really had the Cowboys on the ropes in this one, Danny White came in and did an amazing job in coming in and taking over for Staubach. But the Falcons really should have gotten a touchdown on this play and not a safety. Really cost them.
@6400az Oh damn, that's right! I always thought this play was a safety.....nope, you didn't miss anything! My mistake.......WOW, so the Falcons got 0 points out of that, could have had a touchdown if they got their hands on it. It was a touchback for Dallas, nobody must have had control of the ball when it went out of the back of the end zone.
Ball never went out of the endzone. It WAS a touchback in Superbowl V, remember that one> When Eddie Hinton fumbeled and the ball wen out of the endzone, now THAT was a touchback.
Here, Cowboys# 57 has it in his arms, and in the endzone. Why would they not call that a safety?
@6400az That is weird, you're right again, a Cowboys player gets possession of it and he's down in his own endzone. I don't get how that wouldn't be a safety. The ball is fumbled and goes back into the endzone, the receiving team recovers in their own endzone and is downed, how the heck was that a TOUCHBACK?
Right, the Eddie Hinton one was a sure touchback because nobody had possession as it went out the back of the endzone!
I remember watching his play and being as perplexed then as I am now. Back then, any call that made no sense was said to be a "dead ball foul" or " the whislte blew". Cant't say any of that in this one. This play is a bit like the Tarkenton safety in Superbowl IX.
Oh the days when I would watch my Packers lose at noon (never good enough to play at any other time slot) and then watch Dallas win at 3:00 every DAMN week. Starting my proper Packer fandom in 1977 didn't help the ol' psyche. Watched a LOT of bad Packer football, then some mediocre football, then some god awful football until Bob Harlan turned things around starting in 1989. It took a few years to get things righted enough to bring in a Ron Wolf, but he got it done. The rest flowed from there...
Hey nice video, I was born in 82' though. It great to see old school films... Go Birds!!!!!!!!!! My older brother hated those cowgirls fo the longest, now he is over it. Hopefully we are superbowl bound this year...Its a dirty bird year!!!!!!
@fropa98 Jesus man, what's the point of this you ask? Uhhhh, NFL history for starters? Heartbreaking moments for Falcons fans? As nubirthgod said, NOSTALGIA for God's sake! 1978-1980 will always be for Falcon fans the time period where they came SO close...
As a Dallas fan, I remember both this game, and the 1981 playoff killer in Fulton County Stadium where Danny White beat them in the last minute . As happy as I was for my team, I felt terrible for the Falcons.
I watched this game as a kid, the cowboys struggled a bit against the falcons, but as usual the cowboys found a way to get it done.

Growing up in New Jersey I loved these Falcon teams. Thought I was a young Rolland Lawrence.

Are you serious? Are you serious? Man, the falcons been my team forever. That lost and the one in 1980 crushed me.

@nubirthgod Exactly! These two games for Falcons fans were like the Montana "Catch" 49ers game and the 82-83 NFC Championship were for Cowboys fans.
Man, I was rooting for Dallas in the 1980 one, but I was STILL shaken up by how crushed the Falcons looked after that game.

Wish Atlanta had won this game. Don't think they would have beaten by beloved Rams in the NFC title tilt.

Do you have the 1978 playoff games between Dallas/ Atlanta and Dallas/ Los Angeles Rams?
Michael1972 11 months ago
Bullshit call to help the Cowboys on the non-safety. How typical.

yes, the cowboys are responsible for TWO playoff crushes vs the falcons, particulary the 1980 falcons.
