This is not aikikai aikido. It is a different school called tomiki ryu aikido which seems to take the non violent aspect even further. I do aikibudo which is more suited to real street fighting (all the French police learn it) and I tend to regard this more as a form of gymnastics or maybe an internal martial art. @bylokonnor For demonstrative purposes it wouldn't work well. Not to mention height difference, the angle in which he'd do so would have us not see anything he's doing.
@dragames We do our demonstrations with real attacks and it works very well. If we want to show particular details, we do the attack slowly, but that's all. Anyway, a technique can change according to which attack you are using it against. If it's a punch to the face of to the stomach for example, there can be big differences.

why do i find it hard to believe it will be possible to get someone to the side that easily? and who will come to you like that?? emperial stormtroopers?
@thinkdeeper true it does look a bit thunderbirds but this is a beginners video and the problem with demonstrating aikido is that it always looks fake. Unless of course you apply full speed and pressure but then you'll snap your opponents arm and although it would get loads o hits you'd find it hard to get another training partner after that.
I think you're right. No aggressor, unless I bit slow in thinking, unable to calculate the consequences of their acts, would perform an attack the way we saw here. But that is just a show about how the referred technique is applied. In a real situation things would occur faster and unexpected. Aikidokas learn to react without thinking twice and for that one has to practice. For a start, moving like a robot may help a learner to grasp the mechanics of the technique. Best wishes.

You hit the nail on the head. Too many internet tough guys lashing out at Aikido because it's not a simple brute force system of fighting and is so very far above their comprehension.
this is an example of the problem i have with martial arts. im not saying it doesnt work (unless you are an expert it doesnt!) im just saying that they always show defences to attacks that would never happen. i want to see how they would defend themselves against a fast agressive guy throwing wild punches. thats the stuff thats useful.
What's a "beginner's move" ? A move demonstrated BY a beginner ? If so, then I agree, this IS a beginner's move.
The way this guy moves is akin to second rank testing in mainstream Aikido styles (Yoshinkan/Aikikai/Ki Society/etc). In Aikikai terms, he'd be around 4th kyu.
Even when he shows "realtime", he's not realtime, not fluid, and not continuous. And very obviously, not remotely practical.
Which raises the question - who wants to watch a beginner butcher Aikido technique ?
His height shouldn't make a difference. Look at most Japanese Shihan - they're short stocky men with powerful technique.
It's not about speed, but continuous, uninterrupted control, through one smooth motion. You start by capturing balance from the moment of contact, and then lead the technique to conclusion. That's how it SHOULD be done, but none of this is present in the video.
With a judo hip throw the guy is already balanced then its just about speed. not balance. In the process you get him off balance but thats still in a full move for getting him on the ground.
It isnt like this one wher you have to move his arm to one side and then move his arm to the other and around.
I should mention this move is a right away move from the looks of akido, its just a beginning fight attack.
You said to pull off any move you must get your opponent off balance. In judo that isnt true with the hip throw which is all one big move. All it is is how quick you are.
I also said this aikido move doesnt seem like a middle of the fight move it seems like if someome came at you with a knife move.
The principles of getting opponent off-balance go beyond a specific martial art. It is common sense and basic physics.
I only practiced Judo very little, but I've seen enough to know that you're wrong. Judo is not exempt from the laws of the real world, and even the hip throw has subtleties, and can be reversed if balance is not taken early..
I suspect when you approach mid-kyu ranks in Judo you will start to understand.
I'm not saying it doesnt have the laws of the real world I was explaining how the guy isnt already off balance when you go to pull the hip throw on him when you said the opponent needs to be off balance in order to pull off any move.
You act like its impossible for a move to be official because the person would always need to be off balance first.
This aikido move is a straight away move as it appears since the person he preformed the move on came straight at him.
I said it because you exclaimed how his opponent needs to be unbalanced in order for this move to be effective.
As it seems. If a guy was coming at you with a knife and you were to preform this move then the attacker wouldnt be unbalanced when you did it. Which then would be a straight away move.
I don't know anyone who would come at a guy like that unless they were a zombie or a traffic cop, but then I repeat myself.
I never advocated this video as being proper Aikido, and you can check the validity of my claim by having someone attack you with a color marker symbolizing a knife.
After you see numerous splotches on your clothing trying to "defend" yourself with this move, you'll see what I mean.
The first part of every judo throw is the unbalancing of the opponent --- Hip Throws or otherwise.
For example, in Seoi Nage, you NEED to break the opponent balance forward in order to throw him over your hips; this is not wrestling where you lift the opponent and slam him down.
If you do not break your opponent's balance, it is virtually impossible for you to throw him unless you are far stronger than him (then you don't need Judo).
A COP TRIED THIS SHIT ON ME ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO AN I GOT A RATION OF SHIT FOR ASSAULTING A COP JUST BECAUSE THIS TECHNIQUE FAILED. IT DOES NOT WORK FOR SHIT. Its one thing to get beat on by the cops, but when they try to take you down and fail, then they want to shoot you
hehe, why des someone offer a technique like this as a beginners technique? This is rather complicated if u want do do it in a right way...also bad not to show the finishing of the technique, no matter if u do it with a kick or a ground lock or a throw or whatever.
Something like this could get someone into a situation that they can't handle. Don't try this at home unless you know what to do with the guy once you've got him in the lock, he's most likely going to be significantly more ticked off at you after you get him into that position. If you can't make use of it, consider your situation and if it would be better to just take a couple shots from someone trying to show off than make them angry and get a worse beating because you can't finish the job.
The proper answer is, kick them in the face. A proper strike to the back of the neck is also suitable. Remember, there's no such thing as a 'fair fight' in the real world. Take the target out quickly so you don't have to deal with them again.
Yes. Quite right. Honor is great only in movies. A friend preached this to me over and over again: "When you fight someone, take them out so they can't fight you any more."
I let someone up in a fight once, who I had in a submission hold ,and they literally spit in my face in gratitude of my mercy. He then spun backwards when I open fist back handed his temple to say, "you're welcome." Lesson learned.
its the best art for all round but i have to say this vido poo as i do it no is a master every one will learn for years to cum more more more this is poo demo the true art is so much nicer to watch
But for the street aikido or judo, maybe BJJ would be the best
having good striking ability is good but it is better to get somebody to the ground because then they are in such a vulnerable position it doesnt matter if you hit hard or not, its gonna knock em out
Lol. This guy just hasnt grasped the concept of "breaking balance" at all. At the point where he says ''Break the balance'' he then allows uke to stand up again, lol. I've never come across that 'Pie in the face' attack before either!
Please stop butchering Aikido and giving the art a bad rep. Anyone watching this rubbish, just search instead for Chiba sensei - then you will how how Aikido should be practiced.
To all you folks with some harsh criticism for this I'd like to say a few things. Aikido may have "moves" but they are more demonstrations of the principles of balance and leverage than one trick pony moves. Second, anyone who trains seriously in aikido learns how to be quick, accurate, and most importantly, efficient. My sensei made me endure the consequences of every "move" that we would practice, and it is very much a case of "I was gong to hit this guy, and now I can't breathe" for example
So let me get this straight, I'm suppose to learn from a guy who can't even pronounce tenkai kote hineri? WHICH HE IS TEACHING? This is a joke.

Aikido isn't in mma, because...
-MMA fighters without aikido will be beaten too easily
-MMA fighters without aikido could get their nerves/wrists/etc damaged, and never punch properly again
-MMA fighters will lose money because aikido will take their jobs
-AMERICANS only want stupid brawls instead of martial arts, so they find entertainment in MMA, instead of aikido, where it's over too soon
-AMERICANS can't handle the sophisticated aikido, all they want are brawls
-AND MANY MORE!!

You hit the nail on the head. Too many internet tough guys lashing out at Aikido because it's not a simple brute force system of fighting and is so very far above their comprehension.
kainthornn 2 years ago 2
this is an example of the problem i have with martial arts. im not saying it doesnt work (unless you are an expert it doesnt!) im just saying that they always show defences to attacks that would never happen. i want to see how they would defend themselves against a fast agressive guy throwing wild punches. thats the stuff thats useful.
hjbit 2 years ago
This is RETARDED! nobody is going to attack you like that. unless your fighting a moron.

Yup. A good pressure point strike to the forearm immediately beforehand should do the trick.

Mistakes as he goes along:
1) Raised shoulders = diminished power.
2) Passes right in front of uke, opening himself for several strikes by uke's left hand.
3) Fails to affect uke's balance.
4) Final downward cast is mechanically ineffective as he isn't controlling the back of uke's head. Uke can easily get up if he wants to.
I too, have "many black belts". There was a sale in the 99-cent store.
shihonage 2 years ago
Thats why its a beginners move. Possible top build upon that.
How often in a fight would you expect someone to do that move? Not even thought of.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
Kadzait1-
What's a "beginner's move" ? A move demonstrated BY a beginner ? If so, then I agree, this IS a beginner's move.
The way this guy moves is akin to second rank testing in mainstream Aikido styles (Yoshinkan/Aikikai/Ki Society/etc). In Aikikai terms, he'd be around 4th kyu.
Even when he shows "realtime", he's not realtime, not fluid, and not continuous. And very obviously, not remotely practical.
Which raises the question - who wants to watch a beginner butcher Aikido technique ?
shihonage 2 years ago
I really guess you would have to be really quick with the move then. Your right about the shoulders diminishing power.
He might not have done it all that well due to the guy's height. The guys practically a whole foot taller then him.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
Kadzait1-
His height shouldn't make a difference. Look at most Japanese Shihan - they're short stocky men with powerful technique.
It's not about speed, but continuous, uninterrupted control, through one smooth motion. You start by capturing balance from the moment of contact, and then lead the technique to conclusion. That's how it SHOULD be done, but none of this is present in the video.
shihonage 2 years ago
So to pull this move off you need to get the guy off balance?
If so, then it would be easier to do a leg sweep.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
To pull any move off, you need to get the attacker off-balance.
A leg sweep is one of the many possible moves that exist in martial arts, and what's "easier" depends on situation at hand.
shihonage 2 years ago
Such as a judo waist throw?
With a judo hip throw the guy is already balanced then its just about speed. not balance. In the process you get him off balance but thats still in a full move for getting him on the ground.
It isnt like this one wher you have to move his arm to one side and then move his arm to the other and around.
I should mention this move is a right away move from the looks of akido, its just a beginning fight attack.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
Kadzait1-
Are you making a point ? If so, I fail to understand it.
Judo is not Aikido. Neither is this video, but I already elaborated on that.
shihonage 2 years ago
You said to pull off any move you must get your opponent off balance. In judo that isnt true with the hip throw which is all one big move. All it is is how quick you are.
I also said this aikido move doesnt seem like a middle of the fight move it seems like if someome came at you with a knife move.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
The principles of getting opponent off-balance go beyond a specific martial art. It is common sense and basic physics.
I only practiced Judo very little, but I've seen enough to know that you're wrong. Judo is not exempt from the laws of the real world, and even the hip throw has subtleties, and can be reversed if balance is not taken early..
I suspect when you approach mid-kyu ranks in Judo you will start to understand.
shihonage 2 years ago
I'm not saying it doesnt have the laws of the real world I was explaining how the guy isnt already off balance when you go to pull the hip throw on him when you said the opponent needs to be off balance in order to pull off any move.
You act like its impossible for a move to be official because the person would always need to be off balance first.
This aikido move is a straight away move as it appears since the person he preformed the move on came straight at him.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
"This aikido move is a straight away move as it appears since the person he preformed the move on came straight at him. "
You keep repeating that. I asked you, what is the point you're trying to make. Instead you repeated it twice more.
I still have no idea what you're trying to prove.
shihonage 2 years ago
I said it because you exclaimed how his opponent needs to be unbalanced in order for this move to be effective.
As it seems. If a guy was coming at you with a knife and you were to preform this move then the attacker wouldnt be unbalanced when you did it. Which then would be a straight away move.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
If a guy was coming at you with a knife and you performed "this move", you'd be very dead.
Partially, because it wouldn't unbalance him.
shihonage 2 years ago
Then this move must be pointless and have no aspect of effect what so ever is what your saying.
I dont know anyone who would come at a guy like that unless they would of had a weapon.
I dont see how you would be very dead by preforming this move. High belts in martial arts always manage to pull off the most practical of moves.
Kadzait1 2 years ago
Kadzait1-
I don't know anyone who would come at a guy like that unless they were a zombie or a traffic cop, but then I repeat myself.
I never advocated this video as being proper Aikido, and you can check the validity of my claim by having someone attack you with a color marker symbolizing a knife.
After you see numerous splotches on your clothing trying to "defend" yourself with this move, you'll see what I mean.
Train more. Cheers.
shihonage 2 years ago
I agree.
Ok. You did say that.
I wouldnt ever try this move.
I was just saying its a beginners and thats why as you said. May not look well adapt to a conformable martial art move against someone.

... What?
Where did you learn your Judo?
The first part of every judo throw is the unbalancing of the opponent --- Hip Throws or otherwise.
For example, in Seoi Nage, you NEED to break the opponent balance forward in order to throw him over your hips; this is not wrestling where you lift the opponent and slam him down.
If you do not break your opponent's balance, it is virtually impossible for you to throw him unless you are far stronger than him (then you don't need Judo).
SafaFenoner 2 years ago
Ok, maybe balance wasnt the word. I might of meant center of gravity.

uuh, if I see the stiff shoulders and overall movement of this nage plus the very robot-like technique I wouldn´t recommend this to beginners.

thats all bullshit. u wanna see real shit watch... "real aikido street fight" a guy in a blue shirt does some real shit
KTomlin20 3 years ago
This is a very stylized demonstration, and the "kote hineri" is usually called "sankyo" in Aikido.
From the looks and the names I suspect he studied some traditional Japanese kubodo and just relabelled it as Aikido.
Derukugi2 3 years ago
He doesn't even do the aikido particurly well either. To bad apparently anyone can do expertvillage clips.
Sparrowhawk1138 3 years ago
hehe, why des someone offer a technique like this as a beginners technique? This is rather complicated if u want do do it in a right way...also bad not to show the finishing of the technique, no matter if u do it with a kick or a ground lock or a throw or whatever.
kackbrocken 3 years ago
Something like this could get someone into a situation that they can't handle. Don't try this at home unless you know what to do with the guy once you've got him in the lock, he's most likely going to be significantly more ticked off at you after you get him into that position. If you can't make use of it, consider your situation and if it would be better to just take a couple shots from someone trying to show off than make them angry and get a worse beating because you can't finish the job.
BullyThePucky 3 years ago 2
The proper answer is, kick them in the face. A proper strike to the back of the neck is also suitable. Remember, there's no such thing as a 'fair fight' in the real world. Take the target out quickly so you don't have to deal with them again.
Againsttheflood 3 years ago

Aikido is a great art
I find judo and MMA better for competition
