This song would be nice if it didn't sound exactly like the first six songs (I rented the twentieth anniversary one). I was quite disappointed by this album. Oh, and don't give me any jazz snob crap. I can listen to atonal jazz, and I pretty much worship Pat Metheny as a god (or at least split it with Mike Oldfield). But this was just... ugh... Every musician has a period where they want to prove they can play lightning fast. The 80s were Metheny's, and IMHO, his musicality suffered for it.
Ornette, in coining the phrase "Free Jazz," meant the word "free" to be a verb, not an adjective, as in we must free jazz from its current constraints.
@SytzeKZ this is awesome just to much flavor for the untrained. is like exotic food sweet salty spicy etc combined just an explosion that not every person understand
This recording changed my life. Too bad some people can't dig it --- but I understand. It is challenging music, and an acquired taste. At first I was completely shocked.
@gtralisfr69 Man, I have no way to argue with you, i'm shocked 'free jazz' is even recognized as Jazz. Honestly, please explain what the hell this is.
@REXDEX360 Free Jazz, much like abstract expressionism in art, is more about the process and the way the idea is conceived as opposed to the actual sounds being created. Free jazz is about freedom, breaking free from constraints that are bestowed upon us by "music rules". But in order to break these rules you must know them. In other words you can't be some asshole who just hits random notes and claims he is avant-garde with out knowing what a scale is.
@gtralisfr69 when you limit music to just the pure emotion of sounds you are limiting art and expression to what you think it should be as opposed to what it CAN be; giving it absolute freedom. Am I going to pick up a girl on a first date and blast Ornette Coleman's free jazz as we drive to dinner? No. But I have no right to say it isn't music and any jazz musician (or any musician for that matter) should be able to relate with the release you get from playing music. The purest form of freedom.
NOT Ornette's best.

I just saw The Bad Plus cover this song tonight - their rendition was impeccable, which brought me here to hear the original idea. Spectacular!

@noreun his musicality is different from mine and yours - he/she has a poor and rude language to express this - that's all .. let's be peacful :)

there's some "free jazz" i don't like, but this is undeniably cool. it grooves. Jack Dejohnette f**king KILLS it on this.

I listened this some hundred times, but never get bored with it. For me this is the best thing in jazz, as well as the Miles Davis in the 70's.

awesomely complex piece. Reminds me of Frank Zappa's The Yellow Shark amongst his other vast collection of albums.

This is a disgrace to jazz, I regret looking this up! There should be a law against this.
