The point of the name was to help bring the message across. Buffy was a cheerleader, bimbo type of girl who lived in L.A. as a vally girl. Her name was supposed to give irony and girls like her orignal character someone to look up with and be all 'hey, its ot all about clothes and money and whose the cutest guy' and all that crap. The name is a huge part of the show and if it were changed to something more tamed, the show wouldn't be the same.
