It was a good idea at the time. Undertaker had been the Deadman for a long time, and by 2000 (when he became the American Badass), he had gone through 3 years of being the Lord of Darkness which I thought eventually became sillier than it was scary (his beard from 1999 when he was a heel didn't really do it), so a change was needed. The American Badass was pretty cool, but once he turned heel in 2001 and became Big Evil, it just went downhill from there. Old school is the best!
