From Sunday Night at the London Paladium in September 1965. They probably don't sing it now as it was their first hit not to make the top 20 (it made no.35). It's actually a good song and performance. They are one of the best groups of the 60s and are national treasures!
I've known The Searchers a long time and I know what they thought of the bloke who was mixing the sound on this video. Still most live recordings in those days were pretty awful. McNally's guitar isn't loud enough, nor is Frank's bass, and Chris' voice at the end is about the only thing we can hear.
The actual 45 recording was superb. Should have been a bigger hit that 35. Still available on compilations - out now.
I agree. I heard The Searchers version first, about 8 years ago...and I loved it. Then it took me about another 5 years to track down the original 45(Darin) and to my dissapointment it just wasn't as good. It's pretty funny that when you find the original of a Searchers cover tune, the Searchers version is almost always better!
But, if you have the time, try to find a Bobby Darin tune called "Treat My Baby Good"...I consider it Darin's best song and it has a hint of the Bobby Vee sound on it.
@VeeFan1964 if you listen to the bbc sessions cd at barnes and noble chris curtiss explains how he found the withdrawn bobby darin recoed in an american jukebox
@spacepatrolman -- Yes, Chris DID put a lot of work into getting this song for the band to record, and he did an outstanding job on the high harmony!!! Lucky for all of us he did all the legwork in getting it!! Cheri/CCF/xo
@ChrisCurtisFan somebody in the group comlpianed that he took credit for picking the hits but didnt get any heat when this wasnt a hit but the public is finiky and goes from one fad to another
I think the fact that the Beatles had a song with the same name on the Hard Day's Night album didn't help them.

Saw them last night, Mansfield Palace...Frank said they cannot sing this song...anyone know why not?
The show was as brilliant as ever, with the audience on its feet at the end. Now for Radcliffe on Trent.

What brand of guitars do those guys use? They have a unique shape and color design.
huskyjerk 1 year ago
@huskyjerk , Those are Burns London guitars. They made some wild guitars in weird colors. They were expensive here in the States.

Interesting that McNally, the only non-singing member, is at center stage.

This is one of their most demonstrative songs. I am so glad you posted it to youtube. Wow... I forgot how much I liked it way back then....

Thanks very much for posting. By the by, I think Bobby Darin's version of "Treat My Baby Right" sounds like a Gene Pitney tune.

Impressive line-up of all matching Burns! They didn't seem to do that too often. Nice to see for a Burns geek like me (longtime Searchers geek too!)

Boobby Darin actually made original version but in my not so unbiased opinion The Searchers version was better.

I think Bobby Darin's version is better. I just find it easier to believe what he is singing.

In my Searchers biased opinion, they did the best 'cover' of any tune! :-)
