That's because of the studios. Californication is a victim of the loudness war because the studios mastered the album. Search it up on google. The distortion is from clipping due too too high of a volume of the mix.

@Shadowcamper1383 I think what he is referring to is the fact that in this video, the audio is tuned a little more than 1 step higher than normal. I picked up on it, and confirmed it by trying to play along on bass. You occasionally run across this. Im not certain why the uploaders do this, but I think that its to avoid detection from youtube or record companies who (speculating) use automated software to located copyright infringements. Audio quality is lost during the up tuning.
