  • 5/32" is about 4 mm

  • Thanks for the info , in one of your older vids I took your tip and bought vinyl tubing at my lowes store

  • i use rum 2 but i use lemon heart rum or 7 year Havana club

  • Tom I find that the first smoke or two will tighten them right up.Enjoy that old girl

  • great find..

  • I cannot believe that you did that with a drill!! And without EYE protection!

  • Tom, you handle that drill like a pro. I'd be shaking like a wreck and have a ruined bowl with a smoke hole at the front!

I agree. Bees are magical creatures. They give us honey. And wax to work stem wonders!

  • @OldNorthernSmoky - I keep it on, as it's best if it's a tight fit. In fact to remove it, you really need to carefully cut it off. I'm not an ultra-sanitarian, but I think if you did a dip in rum or equivalent you probably wouldn't be infected by anything. Or ... just chalk it up to 'not sanitary enough' and skip it. It works for me, though, with no ill effects.

  • Great vid Tom, I'm going to get a B P Jum pipe next year from a anorher pipe presenter on youtube

  • @TheRolfiden - You'll enjoy the heft, the rusticated grip, the whole look. Generally I think a taller bowl smokes better, but for a considered puff - and for the look, which is priceless - they're tough to beat.

  • Hey Tom, I just recently purchased a nice estate pipe with no marking except for algerian briar, but the gouging that is present also reminds me of an old custombilt. Are you aware if the various makers, ie Tracy Mincer, Marxman etc produced these pipes without marking them? Its my best smoke also

  • @TheK9COPPER - You're so right! I've got a number of 'like a Custombilt' pipes from that same era. Copycatting is the greatest flattery, eh?

  • Good video , they are always great but you should really ask Santa for a new camera would be so much better than

  • @Bcbud420 - I know ... and when you don't have an active videographer to help out, it can feel rather distant at low-rez. Apologies!

    -Tom

  • Tom great vid and always nice to see your pipe tips.

  • @Pipescratch - Just sharing my way of doing things, to help make it easier for guys to appreciate estate pipes. Thanks for the good words!

  • Funny how those pacific NW homes have heat lamps in a lot of em. Not surprising, just different. Keep that fire stoked up and stay warm Tom!

  • @pipeheadOR - like a chicken in the brooder house - not to bring up chickens. ... :(

    -Tom

  • Good tips. Enjoy the smoke.

  • great to see a new video- and 5/32's is the best way- using a tap holder to turn the drill though, that drill freaks me out- all my pipes have been opened up. the beeswax works for everything and it is nontoxic natural goodness.any tips on how to stop a whistler?

  • @GTFiorano - You know, I don't have any whistlers. I would have thought the 5/32's reamout would have solved that. I've also done the hand-turning of the bit, but it's got to be a genuinely sharp bit or you put some stress on the shank. Being careful and respectful of the pipe works for me.

  • Hello Tom

I like how you keep things simple. Great video, great information. And best of all an old pipe is new again.

    Regards

    Mark

  • @backcountrypipe - I'm all about 'simple is better' in most everything. I love the 'patina' and all that implies, with estate pipes. If only they could tell their stories!

    -Tom

  • Great vid Tom, I'm wondering in the tip of that knife was lost in some sort of altercation? lol

Beautiful little pipe there, and all fixed up ready to go. Nice light and heat! Thats a bonus.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,

    James

  • HA! i open my pipes to 5/32 as well. I am too nervous to use a drill though. I have a bit with a hex end, and i throw a pair of vise grips on the end. Then turn the pipe over the bit rather than turning the bit. Enjoy that pipe Tom. Good find!
