The truth is, is his intention was not to make money, but to hide the physical pain he was enduring from the years of guilt and lies he had been telling himself. he was so ashamed and saw that his guilt was showing, so he decided to cover it with another lie, one that would keep people's eyes off of his sin. He avoided facing his original sin, and made the situation worse - i don't think that is what he wanted, especilally to confess his deep secrets to the world.

Well.. He could have always used the excuse that God healed him because of a Miricale, we see those all the time, but something in me says that it was his spiritual conivction inside of him finally coming clean. He had a chance to cop out again but he came clean.
