  • I have this same exact issue ever since a chest wall injury last year. Thanks for your advice. Doctors have been helpless.

  • Hey there,

How are you doing? Are you feeling better? Has this gone away for you?

I just wrote about my experience with Costochondritis on squidoo

you can find it by going to squidoo and after the webpage address put /MyCostochondritis

I started experiencing this in 2010, I can't wait for it to go away, from what my Dr. says there's no way to know how long it will last. He says it appears to be chronic and it may just one day vanish.. Hopefully sooner than later!

  • Any females have had any children with this condition? How was the pregnancy?

  • my 30 yr old son has been diagnosed with tietze syndrome and been told nothing can be done

and to just rest and take pain killers, he has had it for a year and severe for the last 7 months and its all day everyday (3 or 4 bouts minimum a day) 7 days a week he's vomiting gouging not sleeping, he gave his job up and has rested for the last 4 months and still no improvement. open to any suggestions

  • Currently experiencing these symptoms. Coming back from a trip that was fine, well while unpacking breathing became painful. My chest felt like I had been hit by someone. Now when you I got comfortable. Arms hurt can't move left or right. On meds and in bed.

As a martial artist, without a doubt my husband is asking me stop. What is your opinion?

  • very informative and helpful, Unfortunately i have also had a heart attack and i now have costchondritis on top of that, so when the pain starts i never know where it will end!

  • Great video. I been having Tietze for about 2 months now or so. Before I got my painkiller is was hell. Like you say in this video, panic attacks, thinking that I'm about to die. Sometimes it go down and then the pain can hit you like a knife in the chest. I try to stay calm and breathe slow. What helps me is taking a warm bath or play video games, watch TV and of course take my painkillers when the pain is too much. I hope it gets better for you and that my pain also go away. Thank you.

  • i have the same thing and im geting crezy no one understand me

  • I was diagnosed with chronic costochondritis at 11 and my doctor said because of my growth spurts. He said it would go away on it's own. Eventually it went away which is great because school was starting. Then one day I put to much pressure on my chest and boom its back. I can't rest during school so it's torture and none of the teachers get it. they think it's nothing but it's like hell and I don't know what to do.

  • @twiandhamlover12 do you take medicine like pain relievers? because it might help and maybe put an ice pack on where it hurts

  • Hey man, I'm 18 and have had Chronic Costochondritis for over a year now, I've had all the symptoms and it's awful. Physically at the moment I'm on my 5th run in with this it generally lasts 6 to 8 weeks and progressively gets worse. Thanks so much for this video, actually needed this video. If you would be able to inbox me about this i'd appreciate it :)

  • Does anyone have a boney asymmetrical protrusion on the costal cartilage? I have chronic pain in both shoulders more so the left one but but my chest is fine although I have trouble breathing at times.

  • I have been feelin' it the whole month and i am on pain killers and anti inflamation medicals ...

I have pain in the front of my chest, in the back, in my neck, in my schoulders .... And I do not know if it is normal or not, but lately I have pain in my wrists too...

When I am on medication I don't have crushing pain, but I do feel pain ...

  • @lilnicky47 I went to a different doctor three months later after having no change. I am now diagnosed with gastritis (once again without tests)! I can't disagree more. Anyways thanks for your support!

  • I was diagnosed with costochondritis a year ago. Just last week I saw a doctor that told me it is actually thoracic outlet syndrome. Part of TOS is pectoralis minor syndrome. This causes chest pain and pain down your arm. I sustained this injury from working out. It requires a specific physical therapy program and there is a surgery that can help with the chest pain. I would STRONGLY recommend you look not this. I am starting to feel better after over a year of pain constant pain.

  • Hey helpful video. But I'm having costochondritis pain and I was wondering can u have breathing problems like stop up noses?

  • @MsSummer99 I personally haven't experienced that - may be a sinus issue as well as costo pain

  • @MsSummer99

Hi I have that costo pain in the spine but have laboured breathing and a popping noise in the nose when I inhale sharply. Is this what you have with the nose problem?

  • helps knowing what it is. The worst thing for me sometimes is that it seems to hit me when im trying to sleep and can really mess with my falling asleep sometimes. I wonder if it will ever go away but time will tell i guess. It took me many doctor, e.r. and cardiologist visits to finally get diagnosed costochondritis at the emergency room last time i went. It seems tobe true though if youpanic it can be much worse so i guess sometimes key is to try tostay distracted and let it pass by. Its

  • Appreciate the video. Have had this for probably 6-8 months now. Been pretty bad sometimes but it hel

  • the best thing you can do is imediatley go to the hospital

  • can this kill you

  • @dallastxi3 no mate, this doesn't actually harm you, it just "tricks" your brain's pain response into thinking that you're experiencing a myocardial infarction.

  • @stwaldron1 thank you ifeel much safer now

  • im 13 years old costochondritis it really hurts like heart burns and other stuff is pedialyte ok to drink

  • Forgot to mention that I was diagnosed in less then a hour without any blood test or x-rays so I'm mot convinced I have the syndrome even though I have all the symptoms :-)

  • @Sarah907lopez Im sorry to say but you probably do. I've had xrays and cat scans and nothing shows up but my rib is really swollen. Try to go all natural when dealing with the swollenness. Turmeric helps me when its swollen.. which is all the time. Best of wishes to you and good luck

  • I am 16 years old and I was diagnosed with tietze's disease. Right after I heard I had it I searched it up. I found this video and it is very helpful. I had many questions and you answered them all. I was just wondering does the pain get worse and has anyone been cured from this disease. Do I have to live with the pain for the rest of my life? And any advice for someone just diagnosed except for all that you already said.

  • i am now 18 and have had this since i was 12/13. i only found out due too several pain attacks with swollen ribs and severe back pain which resulted in my first panic attack and an ambulance trip now i can control it but the pain is still there it gets worse in the cold or when im stressed, this is a very good video it is very accurate well done :)

  • Good video. I have had this condition for years myself. I have tietze syndrome. I feel rubbish unless I crack my chest. Keep up the good videos.

  • I've had this condition for about 8 years. When it first started I thought I was going to die, the pain literally threw me on my ass. It felt like a heart attack, but since I was 14 I doubted it, plus I didn't die so I knew it wasn't a fatal problem. My doctor was no help, so I just lived with the unknown pain for years. The chronic acute attacks have gone away mostly, but if I work out a lot or have tons of stress it comes back. Most of the pain/discomfort spreads to upper left part of my body.

  • Hello is is a very good film, we post a documentaire in dutch,we like to contact you and sent jou oure engelisch translation

  • @twinkel69 sure thing, just send me a private message with more details please

    Scott

  • I am 27 Yrs old, and been running even marathon and Not so regular gym going person. , Pleas read from the top to bottom posts.

  • I think the only way to dignose is ruling out all other options of chest conditions.

Symptoms : Chest pain like burning and or shooting in left or right some times both and back some times. and pain in the middle of chest , feel like burning below 2-3 inches of your point where your chin can touch.

  • Still there was pain...

But ofcourse how can One ignore such continuous burning now it was on right side as well same kind of burning (this gave me little comfort that its definitely not heart condition) so went to see the 5th Doctor (1st Emergancy Doc, 2nd Cardiologist, 3rd GP, 4rh Cardiologist, 5th GP) he gave me the term called Costochondritis, I never knew that before, I did some googling and reached here.

  • Still there was pain...

Went to See another Cardiologist. He saw all previous reports and said the same thing. Though He said there was no need for CT Scan as thats not good for health. Still I was anxious to rule out all the possibilities of heart condition so got that done. He asked me to Just ignore the pain.

Though asked me for blood testing (waiting for reports)

  • Still there was pain...

I saw one GP as well he also told me that its a very common condition and give it some time dont panic.

Gave me muscle relaxing and anti-Inflammatory medication.

  • Still there was pain...

I went again to the same cardiologist and asked him to check again and been for computed tomography (CT) scan of the heart, All clear Calcium Score Zero. Doctor assured me I cant have heart attack for at least next 10 Yrs (Because it takes around 8 Yrs to build up that much calcium from zero which can cause Heart Attack, and 2 Yrs to start crystallizing)

I think there is nothing more than that I could do in non invasive check up of heart.

  • Still there was pain...

It lasted for around a week (some times mild shooting pain(not in the center , more on left side)). I thought I might have heart condition , I went to see a Cardiologist, Been there for a Stress testing , followed by Ultrasound of Heart and Chest X-Ray. All was normal. Doctor told me I should be fine in a week. There was no significant improvement pain was now less pinching and more burning.

  • Pain Started...

20 days back It started in left mid chest, vertical burning and shooting more than a stabbing, I rushed to emergency got done ECG (ECG was normal). Doctor told me it could be a gastric pain (As I did had little acidity that day) , Doctor gave me some anti-Inflammatory and Acidity medication. but it didn't help much.

Next morning for 3-4 hours I was feeling fine, no pain, after that it was more like a after pain feeling, soreness.

  • Hey Man, Thanks for the video, I did feel the same kind of pain around 20 days back, though not that intense as you described.

    Story is like this:

  • hey man, I just wanted to ask you something.. I think I have this.. I'm going to a doctor soon but maybe you can help me too.. I've been having this exact type of pain since I was little (I'm 19 now) .. but only like.. few times a month.. and the pain was always for few minutes where I could not breath almost at all.. is this going to stop? can it be cured? thanks in advance and sorry about my english, I speak spanish..( I don't even know yet what really is but it matches with the type of pain)

  • @agustineg2 Its unfortunately no something that can be cured as such - the most you can hope for at the moment is that it will recede with time which is possible - try to reduce any daily stressors and a good diet seems to improve the pain at least - take it easy man, hope it improves soon

    Scott

  • @stwaldron1 thanks man!

  • Hello guys Im am a 33 year old guy with what i am told is titezes syndrome I have had my pain in my chest for almost 3 years with no definete answer from a doctor. Your video has been the first I have come accross it is fantastic and explains things very well I would like to ask if you have experienced a general tightness in the chest I have pains down my left arm the pain is there when i press on my left side and most of the time it affects my only my left side but it does move to my right side

  • Is a strong heart beat common with this im getting worried please help?

    please idk what to do

  • @Dayn7 i don't know if it is common per se, but I have a very strong heartbeat like yours and I can assure you its perfectly normal - some of us just have stronger heartbeats :) - I can literally feel mine when I'm lying still, usually in my ear, are you able to count yours like this too? :)

And there's no need to worry, it's very normal - I appreciate how worrying it can be to have these issues with a strong beat - try to ignore it as often as possible :)

  • Hey mate! Thanks for this video. It has helped me out quite a bit distinguishing what might be going on with me. I have had this for about a month now. And the first time I felt this I thought for sure it was a heart attack. But the pain was a stabbing pain, like three stabs in my chest. And it was so bad I broke out in a cold sweat. My doctor seems to think it was Pericarditis, but to me because of the pain, Tietze's seems more logical....Thanks a million mate!

  • hi stwaldron1!nice vid.Im a 25yo bodybuilder, well, i was till i had to quit in oct '10 cause of injury. My chest n sternum cracks n clicks continuosly, n i have had 24/7 sternum n rib pain for last few months: when i breathe, when i pull m head down towards chest or when i bend down, etc... and 2 doctors have suggested it might be costocondritis. MY QUESTION IS: i have been appointed for an MRI, has anyone had an MRI for costo diagnosis? does it show up on MRI? fkin pain, its really killing me...

  • Hey so I've had costochondritis for about 7 months now, I got it from working out at the gym. I'm taking fish oils, evening primrose oils, glucosamine sulfate, bromelain and ginger root to help calm down the inflammation. I've tried various NSAIDS but they don't work too well. I'm also a chronic smoker and I was wondering if that affects the condition or not. I would also like to know about any other things that affect the condition as well. Overall Great informing video.

  • thanks, for this information, my wife knows for one week that she have Tietze syndrome,

your video is very helpfull, we wish you goodluck, in the future.

    many thanks for sharing.

    Jos en Louize the netherlands.

  • @josvandongen1 thankyou Jos, if there's anything else you'd like to know please just ask :)

  • Mate good video, really put my mind at ease, my doctor has diagnosed me as having costochondritis, but since then the pain has spread around the rib cage mainly at the top left near the shoulder and down my sides literally at the bottom ribso just above the hip!! Cheers Again!!

  • @d251613j no problems Sean, thankyou for the comment :)

  • (continued) To many diuretic drinks like coffee and alcohol and not enough water causes dehydration which increases inflammation, so drink at least 2 litres every day (avoid fluoridated water). Phillip Day has some well-researched books on how diet and lifestyle changes can address most health problems, check it out at credence.org if you are interested. Good luck and good health to you all…..

  • @RdruD2 thankyou for bringing this up - I didn't mention caffeine - one of the biggest evils for this condition is Coca-Cola believe it or not - the high caffeine content will inflame the muscles from dehydration as RdruD2 pointed out - great comment :)

    Blessed Be

  • (continued) Dietary changes can reduce inflammation in the body. Processed foods, junk foods, high-fat meats and sugar can increase inflammation, so cut back on these and eat more organic fruit and vegetables. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are good anti-inflammatory agents. The pigments in brightly colored fruits, vegetables and berries contain many phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Hey guys – I have had this thing for years – the symptoms come and go. I never got a correct diagnosis so started doing my own research and came upon this very reassuring post – nice one mate!! Here are a few things I read about that people may be interested in. Since the condition is associated with inflammation of costochondral cartilage, a blood test for inflammation (sedimentation rate or C-reactive protein test) can help in the diagnosis of Tietze syndrome.

  • I've had Costo' for about a year now, frequently think I'm having a heart attack... Shouldn't be having these dread thoughts at the age of 20...Horrible.

  • @MrEpidemik tell me about it! I'm 22 about to be 23 and I hope most days that I'll wake up and it will have gone - alas, not yet :/

  • continued...I also forgot to mention that I feel the pain in my jaw as well. I have never heard of this before. Is this something that can be seen or does the doctor just go by your symptoms. One of the few doctors that I mentioned this to suggested I go to a rheumatologist, but after all these years, I have decided that there is nothing that can be done other than masking the pain. But like a mentioned before, acupuncture helped tremendously as well as exercising regularly.

  • @tooteyfrootey i shall have to try acupuncture at some point - and dont worry about jaw pain - Ive had that for a while too - it's another warning sign for heart issues im told which I found odd but don't fret, it is just secondary pain - which sounds like it's no big deal, but believe me I know it is when it's happening, stay strong friend

  • ..continued. Acupuncture really help me a LOT. For me the pain is on my left side, chest, back(behind chest), shoulder, front and sometimes back of neck, rib area, & below my bra in the front, & down my arm. I have had panic attacks, but I also have mild anxiety. Walking/jogging regularly/yoga helps tremendously. Exercise really seems to keep me in check. It's frustrating having pain & not having a diagnosis makes you feel like your crazy. Great point about reminding that it's 'just pain'

  • This sounds very similar to what I have had and have been trying to figure out what it is for about 13 years. I'm 35 and female. I have in the past been diagnosed with pleurisy (first time was at the er and diagnosed with a chest xray), I have had massages, chirporactor, etc. I've only brought it to the attention of doctors a handful of times as I have concluded that whatever it is that I have can't really be diagnosed. It comes and goes, but always seems to be there.

  • @tooteyfrootey I forgot to mention, I was diagnosed with the pleurisy twice. Second time I just went by my symptoms from the first time. I really don't know if I really had pleurisy or if it was just a severe pain at that time. But the chest xray confirmed it. So this is why people should get checked out as it may be an infection like pleurisy or something else, along with the tietze syndrome or costochondritis...hope that makes sense what I'm trying to say.

  • cheers for making this video, my GP just told me earlier today that it is quite likely that I have Tietze syndrome. I have pain across my upper back, down my left arm and shoulder and across my chest. Sometimes it's not noticeable, sometimes unbearable. I'm starting tomorrow on NSAIDs, so hopefully should bring some relief. I know what you mean about the fear of dying washing over you though, that is the worst thought, and it amplifies the pains and panics 10 fold until you think thats it.

  • @synthrich1 how have the NSAID pain relievers been? Have you found they take the pain away?

  • Thank you for making this. :)

  • @LilTanzy you are most welcome :) I just wanted to put some info out there as there didnt seem to be anything on youtube to inform people of this - very happy that so many people are finding it helpful

  • Forgot to mention.. The pain radiates around to the centre/left of my upper back and sometimes in my neck. I sympathise with anyone with this disease.

    PEACE>

  • The doctors told me today about Tietze Syndrome and want me to have cortisone injections next week. Its took a year for them to diagnose this. I really thought I was going to die, like you say, with heart attact symptoms..but im still here! The pain is every day, and moves around my chest arms and wrists, to top it off, I was diagnosed with Brachial Neuritis 9 years ago, which has still not gone.

Lost muscles in left shoulder and arm. Normal antiinflamitories do nothing for my pain. GREAT POST!

  • @HarrysCupboard Did the Cortisone work?

I've had two rounds of Cortisone injections Plus a localized treatment and it has helped but 2 weeks later it starts again.

  • @LilTanzy Going infor the injections tomorrow. I'll let you know what happens :~)

  • @LilTanzy HI, sorry for the late reply. Well no, the Cortisone injections did NOT work. In fact I felt terrible for two weeks after. My doctor is now 95% positive it's Tietze's Syndrome, but has no definitive answer. In the meantime, Ive had Colonoscopy, Endoscopy and all came back ok apart from some inflamation in the first part of the stomach tract. This chest, arm, wrist pain is STILL with me all the time. The only thing that helps me is Diazepam, one at night. Other med's dont work....

  • Hi, you have nailed it for me.Ive bee suffering these exact symptoms for 12 months. Ive had numerous ECG's, suffered tachycardia on and off for about 2 months (150/60 bpm) The doc's told me it was anxiety - could'nt believe them, but hey presto, you seem to have got it right. Prescribed - Proprananol, Diazepam, Temazepam, DHC, the works. I only take half a prorananol a day now, no palpitations. Chest pain continues, centre of ribs, upper chest both sides, wrists and left arm...

  • Hi, i'm a french girl, aged of 21 yrs. Last year, my doctor diagnosed costochondritis. Since that day, I suffer every day. The anti-inflammatory drugs don't work anymore on my body. I survive with medications that relax my muscles.

Sometimes the pain become unbearable, making me scream with pain, making me cry. Sometimes during certain crises, I become so afraid to have heart disease, while I'm so young. I'm worried, and it creates me palpitations. I just wanna have a normal life, without pain.

  • @Fallandme I find that breathing in a paper bag helps calm me down and get a grasp on things.

  • cheers pal ive had this for around 16 months now it started one night when i was smoking dodgy things when i was with some friends and it was just a quick sharp pain than it dissapeared for a month or 2 and it constanly got worse and now i have it everyday i went to a cardiologist and he told me my heart was in graet shape i wouldnt wish this on anybody at all im glad to no im not the only person experiancing this so thanks for the informitive video

  • and i have had this like... i don't even remember how long. but least year for now.

  • when watching this is video, i'm getting more sure i also have this tietze thing. Left ribs hurts, or feels strange you know. and my left arm also sometime feels strange. and that paranoid thing is true, you're getting crazy ideas while tietze is going. Hadn't Slept tonight since i had that "pain" in ribs.

  • I've had costochondritis since I was a teenager & I'm 31 now. It can be very frustrating coping with the severe pain, especially when nobody ever seems to understand the condition, I barely even understand it myself. Doctors tell me to just throw painkillers at it, which never works. Usually lifting or exercise trigger it. It's great to hear another human being explaining it, well done man !

  • @Darren9592 Oh, the painkillers did work for me when I was first found out that I had it... a month ago. Unfortunately, right after I caught a cold three weeks ago, the flare ups started again, so now, I'm back on painkillers 3 times a day for 2 weeks, and warm towels and blankets for 4 weeks. Don't know if it'll lessen the pain again. I'll be lucky if it does. If not... I guess I'll have to think of something. *shrugs*

  • this almost sounds like a dissease i had 2 years ago. it was a variant of chicken pox and caused pain and constriction on the area it was on. (in my case my left arm). my arm felt dead for weeks and a small lunp on top of my skin appeared. wasnt as bad as yours sounds though. sorry man

  • @ThyPankake thanks for the sympathy, it's definitely not a variant of chicken pox, had a full screen done a while ago - plus the chest pain alone is enough to confirm a prognosis :/ - the main problem tietze sufferers have is getting a confirmed diagnosis due to the similarities it has to many cardiac problems - for instance, it took my doctors a month to confirm what it wasn't, then an osteopathist to suggest what it might be, for the doctor to confirm that weeks later :/ thanks for the comment

  • Although I don't have Tietze Syndrome, I found your video very informative. Today, I saw my doctor because I thought I had found a lump in my breast, which I've had for a month and a half. This was my 2nd exam, and during my procedure, I felt pain when she touched my sternum. Apparently I have costochondritis, which aggravated my breast tissue causing me to find a "lump". It's a relief that I don't have cancer, but I never knew of costochondritis until today.

  • @crpsaiyan thanks for the comment. That's all I wanted to do with this video, just inform people about a common condition that seemingly few people have heard of.

Good to hear that the lump wasn't anything serious,

    Blessed Be
