Firstly, the arrangement is that Fred takes care of the house and cooking, while Lamont makes the pick ups of junk items, and similar. Plus, the show copies Steptoe and Son. That is why after the second season, when the producers changed it to where Lamont and Fred were nicer to each other, are much better seasons.

Fred is always so verbally abusive to Lamont, and Lamont has to take it. Lamont does all of the work for the business, and Fred only helps when Lamont tells him to. Half-of-the-time, Lamont has to actually wait until Fred decides that he wants to do it. If that was me, I would have left the business a long time ago; even if my boss was my father.
