She was playing in the back yard and ran to greet her brother when she saw him a way off. No parent can stare at their child 24/7, and they only had to take their eyes off the 3 girls for a second to have this happen. Kids have been hit by cars by letting go of their parents' hands and darting out while the parents were standing right there. Those who know them have said the driveway has lots of twists and turns in it, so it's not like he could just see up to the house with no blind spots.

I'm sure he probably did see her - playing on the swing set, in the yard, not the driveway. Maria's 8-year-old sister told her he was coming and maybe he'd put her on the monkey bars, so she ran to see him. Her eyes might have been on him, but his were on the road. He didn't know she'd left the yard.
