The dialect he's using is sort of mixture of southern accents. Little bit of cajun, Southern Appalachian, and African-American from Louisiana/Mississippi gulf area. Like he's been listening to old country and black blues and just put them together. And in a damn nice way, nonetheless. I say this as a native Southerner.

Yeah I actually remember watching this on Happening, 3 days before my 12th birthday! Proud Mary was like number 2 song behind Dizzy by Tommy Roe, it was just before Aquarius by 5th Dimension went number one. Proud Mary stayed number 2, like alot of the CCR songs did. They were on AB too but I don't know if it was before or after this appearance.

They were also on a short-lived show called "The Music Scene", prime time on ABC, exactly 9 months later, December 1, 1969. Other guests that night were Neil Diamond and Mama Cass. 40 years ago tomorrow night as I write this!
