I think he has prepared lots of rhymes (like sue - too ; went- sent etc). And he sings too smoothly, he probably knows the style beforehand. Otherwise it'd make really weak songs and show would look worse.

He probably does think about what he's going to do as Ryan and Colin are talking, but he doesn't know what he's actually going to do until they give him a style and title.
