Portuguese and Spanish are both Latino languages and very similar therefore, any Brazilian can understand a Spanish speaking person, we share many cultural roots and we love soccer and hot women. In this song, Os Mutantes sing in Portuguese and Spanish. Greetings from California.
@EkBalam707 Hey man do you speak German? it's the same difference, it isn't so easy, I'm Brazilian and I live in Argentina. When I got here, I didn't understand anything, I spent 8 months practicing to communicate and understand right. Nowadays I can speak and understand, but I know Brazilian people who live here and ask me for help to understand what the Argentinians are saying. Greetings from Buenos Aires.
É que nem Adorinan Barbosa cantando 'Tiro ao Álvaro' , se fosse num português acadêmico seria uma merda de música... Arte é isso, e Manu Chao teria que ir pra cadeia quando estupra o português e o espanhol... Manu Chao é do Caralho!
it really depends on where you're from, and who's around you. I'm from Los Angeles, so i picked up spanish almost the same as english. and then armenian, bits of german, korean, vietnamese. you dont pick up much if you're in an area primarily with one race. but i mean, we have little tokyo, chinatown, little armenia, little italy, little saigon, oliviera st, it's a mosh pit. what's more cultural than that? AND it's required to pick up another language in order to continue your education now.
Remember when I was living in Massachusetts and a Brazilian coworker was describing the public transportation in Brazil as crappy and i was like: are you fuckin crazy? In RIO the public transportation is way better than in Massachusetts. Buses are nicer and are equipped with 2 TV's, comfy seats, AC and comes every 5 min or so. Train/metro is newer and cleaner. If you're from a small city, my friend, don't judge from that perspective.
read someone saying, a Brazilian, that in US is way easier to find someone who speaks a second language than it is in Brazil. that's not true at all. People in US are not very cultural. they may have a whole lot other qualities, but generally they are not into politics, economy or general culture. Unless you live in a fuckin small city in Brazil, young people is starting to follow politics, learn a second language.
I was Born in Montana 1959, my ancestors homesteaded the East Bank of the Bitteroot River in 1864. Salish-Kootnai people camped on the West Bank, the preferred side with lush grass, and shade from the mighty Cotton Woods. Rightfully so, as they were there first. My ancestors as children played in the shallow waters of the mid summer flow of the Bitteroot with the Children of the Salish-Kootnai. Then the other Wasicus' brought thier virus of Greed and Power, ruining the childrens play R-TCHA
Hell of a band ! Just discovered them one hour ago and fell in love with their eclectism (psychedelic rock, jazz-fusion and that so cool brazilian taste!)... This song fills me with happiness though I don't know why... :) It sounds like openness and brand new horizons !
Mutantes fez parte da minha vida....e mesmo depois de tanto tempo, continua em mim, é realmente o melhor do rock, mpb, e do psicodélico, que já existiu...é tudo de bom!!!
Yes TheEsbornia... they are making fun mixing espanish, portuguese and also italian. They are a few words in italian. It's kind a common in Brazil, people who think they speak Spanish mixing messing up the languages.
Well, for those english spoken guys who don't know, this is an indescrible, fantastic 60's Brazilian rock band and we speak PORTGUESE in Brazil and not Spanish. Take Care.
They are not speaking spanish per se it's a joke like in U.S.A some people speak "spanglish" they are speaking "portunhol" portuguese mixed with espanhol (spanish).
@tsalmoth not really, many schools now a days teach english at a very young age. I myself am an example of this. I'm not saying generaly everyone learns english, but now a days we see many young kids speaking good english. Obviously it depends on what region, in this case I'm talking about the southern area.
@mifutbol Sorry, but... here in Brazil we don't usually learn more than one language. Also, when I lived in the US I figured that in there there are MUCH more people who know another language that here - yes, we're also "bad" in that.
@eabn87 Bom dia.I like a lot that Os Mutantes sang in spanish too, however the pronontiation is not correct in words such as justiciero,guerra...I heard that lately people in Brasil, besides of english studied spanish too,for obvious reasons. In countries like England i think they study no language besides of their own.In Spain education is bad in all aspects.Ate logo.
@elyeye66 Oi. Im sorry but... i think they MEANT to sing that music spelling the words just that way. Here in BR we use to laugh on this misspelled words of other languages. So don't get me wrong, but I really think that they meant to spell that way because this song is all but a serious song. It is beautiful, but not serious. Abraço
@eabn87 nice to hear someone say that who isn't American (like me), but oh how I wish I could speak Portuguese! They basically only teach Spanish here - I know, I know, both form Latin language family....
@eabn87 comforting to hear someone admit that who isn't American (like me), but oh how I wish I could speak Portuguese! They basically only teach Spanish here - I know, I know, both from Latin language family....
@mifutbol what does this have to do with os mutantes? im sure there's just as large a proportion of brazilians who are ignorant fucks as there are ignorant fucks in the USA. every country has their fair share stupid people.
@ericjungleboy What I meant was that the majority of the Brazilian Population is barely literate in their own language, in the sense that they' are poorly educated. The members of Mutantes are an exception, given the fact that they were high/middle class and were born in a Brazilian city called Americana (founded by americans that escaped the civil war), thus familiar with the english language from a very early age. Mutante's main singer surname (Lee), is american to begin with.
@mifutbol --yes yes yes, this is widely understood. what you neglected to mention is the quality of language coming from Brasil as compared to say, oh, Mark Twain or James Madison.

The English language is of greater entropy, miscegenation, and elegance than Portuguese. A simple set interposition demonstrates the claim:
Portuguese: Latin, Gallo-Iberian
English: Germanic, Attic, Latin, Norman, Celtic, Gallic
American English is of greater semiotic integrity yet owing to the superior breadth of American memetic Heritage.
