I'm currently doing the same thing to my K5's tailgate. It's a pain in the ass. I've already replaced the drive cable and that didn't solve the problem, so I took out the window motor and now I need to wait for the new motor to arrive, and then I'll install it!
5 years and that's it for your tailpan rust wise? Your lucky, mines rotted clean through one one side. I patched the other side. Birdshit welds however, but it's holding very well. By time that 1/16" galvanized rusts through the rest of the truck will be long gone.
My day oil 15w-40 thinned out like water within a few minutes, and smelled like a strange combo of engine oil and diesel fuel. When i pulled the oil fuel pump off it leaked diesel out by the push lever where the fuel pump pushrod works the fuel pump, on what should be the engine oil only side.
Tried both keys. They only go in about 1/4 of the way on the key and stop. No matter which way i try to put the key in. I think somethings busted inside the switch. I"ll have to check tomorrow.
the door locks could have been changed and the tail gate key could hve been lost my sisters76 valiant had the drivers side door lock replaced so now i can only lock it from the passenger side it's a pain
thats why i love barn door, dont need no stinkin switches in a barn door

I need to pull my tailgate switch off and have it re keyed as I don't have one that will fit it. How hard was it to get out?

get an electric lift pump from a 93 6.5 and a blockoff plate(the universal chevy V8 ones from autoparts stores work)
I can show you how i wired mine up to work with the key on.
Change that fuel pump before it starts leaking diesel into your engine oil. Ask me how i know.
