you have all of these famous sounds-wall of sound, sound of memphis,philadelphia,motown-put the police had a great sound all their own-those guys were awesome
Could you imagine kids today filling an arena and dancing their ass off to songs about Jungian philosophy, Cold War politics, and creepy obsession for two hours? Neither can I. What happened to taste?
@bhkidd I saw them on their reunion tour when I was 14 or 15. I cried when I got the tickets because this band built my youth. From 4 years old and up, they were my number one favorite. I'm 18 now, spending a Friday night at home watching Police videos on youtube. Don't lose faith in today's kids just yet, though I know it's hard at times. :)
to lucy1771: I can imagine a little bit what it might have been to be there... MY HOLY GOOOOD!!!! I saw them inBuenos Aires in 2007 (can't believe it's been so long!!) and even if it was great I wish I'd had seen THIS power, THIS energy blasting around and on me... They were the best I can recall, and I had the chance of seein Led Zep and PinkF live.. Congrats!
@crodariful Yeah, they wasted about 15 years worrying about ego and petty differences. Especially Sting. I am just glad they played together again, even if they were a bunch of 50 somethings.
@bhkidd Well...it wasn't ENTIRELY petty ego. There were financial and creative control problems. But I have to say in Sting's defense that the standard for songwriter vs musicians = Songwriter gets 60% and musiciand split 40%. But Sting, in effort to avoid the conflict, split the difference with Stew and Andy, giving them the best musicians' deal in the history of the business. He couldn't help it if he wrote the best of the songs (he did0, but he went above and beyond. Stew was still pissd
@didyouseethatlight Stewart's contribution in his drum technique brought this song to light. Without Stewart's contribution as well as Andy's guitar work, it would sound so completely different no matter what Sting did. As you already know there are different styles and versions of some songs. Original songs made back in the 50's remastered and arrange differently by rock bands sound so completely different and in some cases better than the original songs written by the song's composers
@MrHardrod2 I think you misunderstand me (Jesus. I can't believe I'm sitting here defending THIS.) Each member of the Police was VITAL to the existence of the Police. They were one of the greatest bands in history. Why in living fuck are we arduing about this? It happened the way it did and that is that. Who gives a shit aboput the politics? The only thing that sucks is that they couldn't keep it together for three or four more albums.
@didyouseethatlight Yes, I understand you. Im not arguing with you. Just acknowledging the fact that each member of the band (the whole trio of sting, stewart and andy) were vital to each other and each of them had something incredible to contribute to the whole Police experience. Andy's guitar work and Stewart's drum technique were complementing each other together with Sting's bass lines and vocal work. They without argue one of THE greatest bands that was created.
It's definitely a hell of a lot better than the whiney emo crap that bands play now! The Police had songs about war, about archetypal forces and the Theory of Synchronicity, and just about every other subject you can imagine. Their songs had real meaning, with Sting's genius songwriting. There isn't anything like this anymore. Even "Message In A Bottle" which was a song about loneliness and despair, had an edge and twist to it. At the end, the character realizes he's not alone.
Dont forget suicidal obsession, order of protection obsession, fascination with the prehistoric planet, and Cold War spy antics. They pretty much ran the gamut
@love2run122 Has reasons to have it. with the great lyrics he wrote for the police alone? you can't deny this to the poor guy... Lovely by the way.. so he can have a massive ego..
@arkmabat He grew up learning from an old jazz drummer, and that is how all the old guys played. Watch Buddy Rich sometime. Many old drummers consider matched grip an insult to the percussive arts.

Copeland uses 'tradition style' for holding his drumsticks...hmmm....and he uses like a circling pattern on the snare...most interesting!
