it has been proven that ED's are not caused by anything! it is a biological mental illness... and for thoughs slating the fashion industry need to stop... i work in it, there is definatly pressure there to look your best and stuff, but if you choose to be in thatenvironment then so be it. its just the same as any industry, the pressure is always on to be the best... in the fashion industry its ur looks!
I agree with tommybev to some extent. EDs are about controlling thoughts, feelings and emotions. They're about identity - and disturbances with how this develops and is altered, but they're not really about beauty or vanity. Almost all girls in the developed world are exposed to images of thin models but few develop EDs - and in particular anorexia nervosa. There must surely be something about a person's temperament, or other troubles in their lives that causes them to diet compulsively.
I just saw the documentary "America the Beautiful" about the fashion/cosmetics industry. In one segment it followed the short career of a 13-year old model. The fashion industry is hard on women, but people forget that its purpose is to make money so that the owners of the fashion houses and the workers can get paid. Like any business, it's purpose is not to be nice or kind or supportive to anybody. Girls who want to be models need to know that!
The fashion industry is not the sole cause of eating disorders, but its an epidemic at the moment, search "Ali Michael Today show" Ali speaks of how her hair fell out on the way back home from a modeling assignment and how she lost her period and asked other models and they had lost their period too and had not had one in months. The fashion industry can be blamed for the ideal the designers encourage. Ali was asked to lose weight. It was not her natural weight.
I don't think the fashion industry CAUSES eating disorders but my friend who is currently attempting to recover from anorexia deffintly compared herself to the models in fashion magazines and would like mesure herself up against them and use them for inspiration. But anorexia is mainly about controlling your life. I just don't think the fashion industry help. It makes most young girls feel ugly and fat at some stage in they're life.
Thanks for posting this very helpful video. I suffered from anorexia nervosa from age 11-40yr and have found the media attention on thin celebrities as a supposed, but unfounded cause of eating disorders (EDs) stifling. It gives the impression that those who suffer from these complex and serious illnesses are simply vain, narcissistic, attention seekers. This can lead to unfair stigmatisation and fear of seeking help or support. People with EDs usually do their utmost to hide their problems!
I don't think the fashion industry causes eating disorders. I think super skinny models just exasperate insecurities and body image issues that are already there. And, like the woman said, it's a double standard.

Eating Disorders are not caused by media at all...
the only reason people in the media have e.d is because of the amount of pressure they are under.
most teens are under pressure aswell to do well or some sort...
i know my e.d is not because of media...
i think aspiring towards someone who is so ill is weird... but the disease makes you do it...
although im not in recovery i know i should be but when i try i fail and i simply cant do it alone.. lol
