Henri could have won the rally but 1 main factors ended his life The lancia was leaking fuel but not just petrol it was mixed with Touline the fuel was mostly Touline the chassis or anything had nothing to do with it Touline was the real problem its a type of fuel for turbo engines to reach peak BHP but for humans but the fumes u feel light headed or K.O or Death it cant be removed from the body it stays and affects the nerves system in Henri's case he inhaled the fumes then then he was K.O
@fgtxpaco7458ss Toivonen was complaining about the car being too powerful for a rally like the Tour de Corse. He found it very hard to keep the car balanced on the road and admitted it was very exhausting. Another reason why he died and because his crew/team was ignoring Henri's complains.
@MegaJCMartin94 well if he was simply exhausion Marrku Alen would have died too but the car alone wont kill you he also had the flu and to end it all the Touline simply it was Flu+Exahausion+Touline=his death Im not saying the cars easy to drive they needed insane skill but the cars were not the problem The real Problem are those bloody insane fans that got in there way and the FISA did nothing to control if your Italian or Portheges or spain dont try to defend the real cause
@MegaJCMartin94 Another factor was that the lancia was far to big for Corsican roads. The rally seemed for better suited to small light cars such as Peugeot's 206, Renault's 5 Turbo and just about any fast go kart....
Group B could still be running today if they just taimed the cars and kept the damn people off the roads they are for the cars not for people to play chicken. We will never know how big and how far it could have went it could have been bigger then all the racing today. R.I.P. Toivonen and Cresto and Bettega
The accident of Toivonen wasn`t very special itself -- pretty usual at Corsica. But Lancia spat on safety and used unsafe plastic fuel tank to decrease the weight of the car. The tank was hit by a tree and exploded. And the safety cage of Lancia was surprisingly weak too -- car was heavily thrashed and drivers were supposedly killed by the trees alone.
The crazy spectators were one reason to bann the Group B. Remember the Crash were some spectators died. It was a matter of time when another deadly crash would happen. But you are right, Cars with engines with 600 Bhp were to difficult to handle... RIP Henri
Rally Portugal incident where a Ford rally car lost control and hit the spectators a few months before the fatal crash of Toivonen and Creste at Corsica.
The Delta S4 was a ticking timebomb. You were almost sat on the fuel tank. A momentary lapse of concentration in any Group B car would have proven costly.
It was the fucking spectators aswell, more than likely 5 people deep standing merely a couple of feet from the side of the road, and more often than not actually in it.
And besides, the cars were far to large, powerfull, and a little to bulky (some group b cars) for stages like that. The Corsican roads seem far more suitable for micro cars (like the Smart Fortwo and the Peel P50) as well as some very fast go karts, than for these fairly heavy and bulky dinosaurs. RIP Henri and Sergio and Group b.
Yeah, I agree, the Lancia and the Alfa looked out of place in this rally. They seemed too big and long for such narrow and winding roads. Also, perhaps the cliff face roads were not fenced off enough tp prevent cars from driving over the edge.
Instead of banning group b they could have controlled the class to some restrictions and safety mandates (like F1 and IRL do). They could have restricted engine size to (for example) 1000cc or something. They could have also put safety barriers in corsica to prevent cars from falling of the cliff.
1000cc? thats the cc of a large motorbike you idiot. you think an organising rally team would have went around puttin up barriers for a three day event?
In some rally events all over the world, not only are there rally cars with 1000cc in some series, but also in some rally events the people who organize a rally event do put up barriers in some places where they need to be placed. Why dont you watch some rallies on youtube and you'll understand what I mean.
I've been going to and organising rallies all my life. I don't need youtube to learn about rallying. Theyre not rally events. They are racing events. 1000cc is that of a Fiat Seicento - a tiny car. How good would it be to watch a load fiat Seicentos going around at 50mph? or to drive it. to do both would be a waste of time and money!
So do you think that organisers would put up barriers on alot of the average 350 stage km? Who had the money? The entry fee just covers the running of an event!
An example a rally in which parts of stages are either fenced or have some barriers put on them is the recent tour de corse rallies from 2002 onwards. From what I have watched on a program and based on what I heard, they had to place barriers on some parts of the stages (the ajaccio stages to be exact) in the wake of Tommi Makinen's accident in 2001 (the accident that injured his co-pilot) to prevent other drivers from crashing and possibly falling into a ravine.
In addition in some parts of the stages in the Monte Carlo and San Remo rallies there are some barriers that were not set up by the FIA or the organisers, but nevertheless the barriers serve the same purpose. As regards the 1000cc or less part, there are some events in which cars like that participate in. The Mongol Rally hosts classes of 1000cc or less, another example was back in the late 50's and early 60's, Panhard once ran a wrc car that hosted a 848cc engine.
Yes, what I am saying probably makes no sense to you, but hey, if you take for example and old Fiat 500, classic Mini, or even a Smart car, Add some slightly large(custom) wheels, and then either tune up the engine/put 1 or more turbochargers to the engine, or simply add a 1000cc superbike engine with 1 or more turbochargers and you basicaly have a formidible rally weapon. (You can also add a 4wd system as an option too.)
In addition if you look on youtube under the search titles, smart 1000cc or smart 1000 gsxr, you may find a clip that has a smart powered by a Suzuki GSXR 1000 engine (although that I assume, does not have 4wd). If the FIA had WRC cars that had 1000cc or less, like I have mentioned, the sport could've been more affordable, In my opinion that is.
We do have WRC cars that have 2000cc as of right now. They are however limited to 300 hp. I am thinking they should probably do the same thing with cars with 1000cc or less....
well said tommytoofar. henri was one of the most exciting and talented drivers i've ever had the privilege to see. big loss to rallying, an exceptional talent. same as mcrae, gone but never forgotten
