Shane hadn't picked up or looked at his gun since he started with Starett. He couldn't resist any longer. Look at the look on his face after shooting. He's back where he was.
I have loved Shane since the first time I saw it. I loved the fact that the attraction between Shane and the farmer's wife did not lead to romance. I loved the fact that the violence appeared realistic. I respected the fact that it ends with Shane leaving saying, "There's no living with a killing", yet again demonstrating his willingness to put the common good above his pleasure.
Don't know why the pro-southern anti-northern aspect does not disturb me more.
For interest the first 'B' Movie was 'Futtocks End' lots of girls, stockings and suspenders but in keeping with the quiet of the first hour of 'Shane' 'Futtocks End' had no narrative, only grunts and groans.
I recollect the cinema audience in North Street, Bedminster, Bristol gasping collectively and some 'blood hells!!' as these gunshots filled the place.
We jumped out of our skins might be a correct description!
It is at this precise moment you realise that this man has a sinister past and while he tries to walk the moral high ground he knows his time is coming.
in a book on shane george stevens used a howitzer blasting its blank shot into a garbage can for added reverberation with a rifles bullet whine mixed in.so its not the sound of a real sixgun.
i was 4 when my dad took me & my brother to see it - from that moment on "shane" was & is my best movie ever - that scene & the final gunfight is something i'll never forget - try to watch the movie every chance i have
Alan Ladd's morph, is captured most dramatically in his facial expression, from mild mannered to seasoned killer. Yep, he's w/o a doubt a "match" for Jack Palance, and then some. We know exactly where this is headed .. and it's likely outcome. Some of the GREATEST motion picture scenes ever directed & performed, are in this film !

Seen Shane in 1956 at the Ritz theater in Livingston, Tennessee as a kid and I probably have seen it a 100 times or more since then.

I don't consider Alan Ladd the best actor in western movies, but in this one, he really outperformed the best of the best.

he played a killer in 'this gun for hire' too
