  • because WE asked for it!

  • lol invisible handjob

  • @bwsmaze I know right? XD

  • thats awesome

  • I just learned about this Theremin thing today. So crazy! I want to try one! Looks like it takes some crazy precision, though.

The song, if anyone is wondering, is "You Were Meant for Me" from the Broadway Melody (1929). It's covered in my favorite movie ever, "Singin' in the Rain".

  • spunds like a violin or kinda, now play pokemon themes pl0x

  • now thats a dance melody

  • Who is the lady watching.

This instrument was a godsend for lunatics , pretty much the way handsfree phones are now.

  • You Were Meant for Me 1929

  • is this so antique like this????...... i tought it was a innovation OH GOD

  • @josuefs it was one of the first electric musical instruments XD

  • I wanna get a theremin!! kinda expensive though

  • I simply must have a theremin. I don't think I can live without learning to play one at some point. It sounds like a violin from outer space! :D

  • is this fake? i thought theremin was a very recently invented instrement!

  • @philsk8salot it was invented in 1921

  • @Ryalt holy shit dude...

  • nagyon fain

  • kinda reminds me of the fallout opening song

"set the world.. on... fire..." *singalong*

  • @HomunkulusGnom I thought the opening song was when Im gone

  • @josher2021 your probably right :/ i just wrote what i had in mind..

the part where he sings "set the world on fire.."

nice to see people around here know what good games are :P

  • @HomunkulusGnom no I was wrong, that is the opening to fallout 2, or 3... all I know is that its not called when im gone, its called maybe, and thats the opening song to the first one, I have it, got it completely free too ;)

  • @josher2021 hehe, okay.

well then, keep on rockin ;P

  • I don't know what's stranger, the performance or the background decor.

  • ok.......

    i don't see strings....

  • @TheCyberbedouin you dumb fuck its a theremin

  • how do I favorite a video now? Youtube fucked with the interface and now I'm confused.

  • PARTY HARD!

  • I could see this clip sort of freaking a little kid out a bit. Strange sounding instrument but really intriguing.

  • Yo quiero tocar mi theremin como ese señor (:

  • They were so much better at the theremin back in those days, i have noticed.

  • He takes it home at 1:15.

  • This is dance music.

    Party hard.

  • AWESOME

  • Did Jimmy Page turn this thing inside out or what?

  • No. He first witnessed a theremin being played by Randy California in 1969 when opening for "Spirit" on tour. He also "lifted" the theme from "Stairway to Heaven" from Randy's song "Taurus", which was on their 1968 lp "Spirit"

  • Amazing!

  • wooooooooooooow, this is the best strange instrument i had ever seen!!! now i can understand how they could make te songs for all the old films!

  • @thrasher1991

you ain't heard nuthin' yet! search for "gravikords, whirlies & pyrophones" on youtube & listen to all of the tracks from that CD including the clara rockmore track i just mentioned. all of the instruments are homemade. i'd suggest starting with "le bal" which features bowed pieces of wood that make strange vocal sounds. it used to freak my cat out. then check out "new york new york" played on car horns or any of the other tunes.

this is just the TIP of the weird iceberg

  • goel

  • Why is it the Who's job any more than any other rock band?

  • @voxhammer

    Lol World Health Organisation xD

  • Power Russia

  • Dr. Hoffman played the thereminn for the movie, The Day The Earth Stood Still. (1951 version)

  • calm down and take your Ritalin! :O

  • I think that theremin's used on thrilers and science fiction movies because they have a very strange and apocosme sound

  • are you sure you dont mean a acoasm sound?

  • oh sorry !

    my english isnt very good

    i mean unearthy

  • it kinda sounds like the violin here .. ive only heard of this TODAY!! never known there was this kinda instrument ..

  • Where have you been Jimmy Page has been using this instrument for years?

  • do all the hoffmans make psychedelic stuff or what?

  • i think was Albert Hofmann

  • @FallenExpert i doubt it...on the ranking of german family names, hoffmann is 10th rank

  • @FallenExpert Not the same Hoffman. The one who discovered LSD was Albert Hofmann (January 11, 1906 April 29, 2008).

  • @madamerotten omg i know, it's a joke =)

  • @FallenExpert You might be thinking of Albert Hofmann (January 11, 1906 April 29, 2008), the scientist who discovered LSD.

  • @FallenExpert

if you want to hear THE master of the theremin, check out clara rockmore's rendition of "the swan" in my channel's "weird & fun stuff" playlist. she literally makes it sing without much of that 1950s sci-fi sound at all

  • @djgambitron

Wow, it's is truly awesome =D

  • @FallenExpert

if you hurry up, you might be able to catch a history detectives rerun with a theremin story that's airing this week.

  • genius

  • No mames suena bien cabron!!!

  • sounds a bit like stardust

  • Awesome

  • He is very good. As far as I know, He played he Theremin on Spellbound, The Day the Earth stood still...

  • awesome!!!!!! i love this kind of thing. thanks for posting :D

  • That part just creeped me out lol.

    "Because YOU!! asked for it...."

  • It was a great show back in the '50's. People would write in requests for interesting things they'd heard about, and the producers would present it. That "YOU Asked for it!" was a trademark of the show.

  • Thanks for the upload, that's fantastic.

  • a "popular dance melody" haha gotta love the 50s.

  • seems like an Halloween sound!

  • sorcery!

  • Great video.

    Cheers.

  • il primo teremin!

  • es un instrumento para películas del santo! Suena muy tétrico. Ya quisiera ver las caras de mis vecinos (¡y mi familia!) si comprara uno y me pusiera a tocarlo jaja

This is an instrument invented specifically for 50's UFO movies. (Just kidding, but still *creepy*)

  • The way Mr. Hoffman played this tune (Staggering vibrato) I can see why you'd say that. In fact, it was invented in 1919 and has been used to play classical music. It's often used to interpret string or vocal parts. Lots of wonderful stuff on YouTube if you'd like to hear it at its best. Search on Clara Rockmore, Lydia Kavina, or Thomas Grillo who has lessons posted.

  • as an instrument, its probably better known for the melody hook line in the beach boys song, good vibrations

  • No, it wasn't used in "Good Vibrations." That was a manually-controlled audio oscillator played by Paul Tanner.

  • i think you'll find its was called the electro-theremin.

    i wasnt that wrong ;oP

  • You were wrong, because the so-called "electro-theremin" has no resemblance to a proper theremin, in that it has to be touched in order to be played. The name of the electro-theremin was a bad idea foisted on Tanner by a record producer. Tanner, up to that point, just referred to it as his "box."

  • its a resistance controlled pitch oscillator,

it was developed so that it was easier to play and more consistant, tanner described it as a type of theremin on a documentary for the bbc.

  • I think Tanner used a Heathkit-brand oscillator called the "AO-1," manufactured between 1952 and 1959, in which the variable element was an air-variable capacitor. The sheer "smoothness" of the glissando suggests that it was capacitor-tuned, as opposed to resistance tuned. But Heathkit also made some oscillators that were resistance tuned, so I am not 100% sure. Too bad that the instrument was destroyed in an earthquake!

  • haha you guys both show off! interesting to read though!

  • man that's nice music

  • this music creeps me out.

  • me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol!

  • very interesting

  • lol + 1

  • Cool. I always wondered how theremins were played. Neat video!

  • Reminds you of Fallout 3 Also

  • hahahaha YESSS i'm expecting some mutant to bust out of nowhere

  • And falling love with healty womens and having super nature mutation dna kids ^^

  • Tsss1 Esto está como que muy cabrón!!

  • I dont know why.....but it reminds me of Bioshock....

  • You're right, it does

  • Me too, probably cause it's 50's music and BioShock has a lot of that.

  • yea holy shit thats a thickly cultured game

theres a possible way to get trapped in that game in one place if u take a shortcut and burst out near the ceiling somewhere

  • wow this is a gem of a video!

  • bello strumento il theremin

  • that was fucking bad-ass

  • "Because YOU asked for it" e.g. suit your damn selves:D hahaha

  • Theremin is one of 1st electronic instruments, invented long before synthesizers and keyboards. I would say it s in the same line like e.g. the Trautonium.

  • It's what I hear inside my head 24 hours a day. Exactly

  • excelente jaja

  • sounds like bioshock.

  • Who would agree that a flexatone is and acoustic theramin?

  • this song makes you want to get up and dance!

  • what is the price of a theremin? is this expensive?

  • kind of... check it out on guitar center, its like $350, but you can make you own with some tutorial on the internetsss

  • Apparently you can get a proper one for $150, you can also make one out of 3 AM radios.

  • what?

    haha

  • i just thought that was the most random, yet somehow funny thing i've heard

  • popular dance melody

  • The only instrument you don't have to touch to play. Who would have ever thought smething like this could be invented lol?

  • I WANT ONE!!!! :D

  • i want two

  • Great sound!

  • Gotta have a Theramin in EVERY 50's haunted movie scene!! yahoo!!!

  • and thanks to Russian becuse without them we wouldn't have this theremin

  • Leon Theremin was also a spy. If I listen to this instrument long enough, I may learn to appreciate the bagpipes.

  • Could be right. Wikipedia says he also invented some spy equipement for KGB, but I don t know, if he also used it, if he was a spy on his own...

  • Clerence1969,

He invented the Buran eavesdropping system. It was very clever as it was passive until the right harmonics are directed to it. Then the operator can hear the vibrations around it. Once, the Soviet boy scouts gave a U S seal, which used it, to Averil Harriman. A Brit scientist eventually figured it out. It's modern usage was shown in the movie," Clear & Present Danger"(Laser to the window). That's why the CIA building has a glass sandwich, bathe with music, on the outside.

  • I've heard theremins for a while and I've come to realize...

    They sound like spooky violins.

  • can you play Slayer with that?

  • es realmente increible , jamas avia escuchado ablar del Theremin, es huausiko

  • lovely sound. Perfect vibratto.

  • dude this is awesome! if anyones been inspired to take up theremin enter to win one at theunusualtimes. net

  • The shadow of the antenna falls right in his face, splitting his left eye in two

  • pretty sinister, love the look

  • Heh, I've been watching X-Files box sets and the second season of Heros recently. Is he indected with the alien black tar or is he releasing a deadly virus? ;-)

Nice performance and I love theremins by the way!

  • I don't know why but for something so one dimensional, I find this instrument absolutely intriguing!

  • Theremin...I love it I love it I love it...!!!

    This sound is very "vintage"!

  • So this aparatus is what used to make all those weird sounds on old films and cartoons, i had no idea!!

  • Yeah, the antenna on the left controls the pitch. closer to it = higher pitch. And the loop controls the volume. closer = quieter.

  • I saw Gabby LaLa play this peculiar instrument, funkadelically, on stage in Col. Les Claypool's band at the Vic Theatre 2006 and 2007. Simply awesome!

  • I needs to boogie.

  • he played on Beefheart's "Electricity." Cool stuff..

  • wow ive never seen one of these before.

  • also a great organ accompainement

  • its only a shadow ^^

  • yeah, uncanny placement of the shadow from the antenna

  • no is the shadow from the stick of the theremin because the light is proyected to the performer's face

  • No way!!!

I had no idea how old theremin was...

  • 1920!

  • it was invented 1919 by Lev Serguéievich termen

and it was presented in 1920 in St petersburg

  • That's why I love Wickipedia at last

    Great info...

  • no its reggeaton!

  • this is real hip hop.

  • It sounds more like Ambient black metal.

  • nothing sounds like burzum with a theremin.
