  • what the hell? is he singing or chewing gum?

  • why is he always changing the lyrics?

  • @kcufyouu

because he is the man, and he knows what the hell he wants to do eventually

  • @Stouggies so true

  • In the beginning when he says "this is a song about stayin' back" he was referring to the crowd. I was at this show and everyone kept jumping up on stage.

  • oh, this is cool. so different from the one i've come to know and love.

  • Does anyone know what kind of guitar this is? I've wondered for years?

  • @mzibi109 gibson chet atkins i believe

  • I wish Dave still played the song like this, I love the guitar in it

  • This was the day i was born.. September 1st 1995 :D

  • this should have more than 52,468 views... come on people!

  • Its funny , the more you listen to dave the easier it is to understand his lyrics. I see all these people saying they dont understand him, I was once in this group. But now that i have listened to countless dave, The dave language is perfectly clear to understand. Funny the way it is.

  • @kadleckyle was that last line supposed to be wittty? cuz it was :P funny the way it is:P and I agree lol

  • @kadleckyle you're awesome/right.

  • is this WITH the Police?

  • no, they initially titled #41 as 41 police because the group thought it sounded like a police song while it was being developed

  • oh word. that explanation blew more than my mind

  • thats ok, you can pick up all the pieces and fix yourself, I guess they decided they really didn't want it to sound like the Police so they just left it #41

  • right..

  • I don't want this song to be over.

  • Absolutely best version of 41 police! ;D

  • Was this filmed on another planet? Not sure what the hell he's saying.

  • The great beginning for all-time DMB classic tune.

  • I am reading all the comments about #41 being too long?! Are you guys crazy!! #41 is amazing live, I say the longer the better!

  • sometimes i listen to sojourn of arjuna and ask myself where the rest of the song went!!!

  • @FutureIronMomma i heard a 23 minute long version of #41 at a concert this summer. best 23 minutes of my life.

  • skinny dave....

  • You can see the Stand Up logo at around 1:32.

  • The Stand Up logo? Really? Try the fire dancer...the official DMB logo. Why would the Stand Up logo have been around in 1995?

  • haha my thoughts exactly

    way better than the rings.

great song. this version is featured on the til we dance away compilation, a MUST HAVE

  • what's that compilation? where can i get it?

  • Because it was drawn around 1994 dimwit. Look at the damn video

  • Yeah, it has. Like I said in my post it's the fire dancer, not the Stand Up logo...dimwit.

  • the stand up logo is the fire dancer.

  • that's not the stand up logo...that's the dave matthews band logo (the firedancer), and it's been around far longer than just stand up

  • I DK bout everyone else but i think i might like this dysfunctional version of 41 better than 41 itself. especially the first couple minutes

  • haha #41 drags these days?...wow

  • Solely in terms of tempo, compared to these early versions, yes. I wasn't implying that it's boring. It's not.

  • i agree!

  • I would never say that a 10 minute solo by Leroi or would be "too long". Hell, that's too short for me.

  • When jeff coffin runs out of ideas to improvise on he starts to scream high notes over and over and just running up scales until he thinks of another idea to solo on and when he does this IT DOES GET TO LONG

  • agreed

  • I kinda miss the electric guitar in the background that's on the album version, and here. But never now :( But that doesn't even faze the fact of how much I love DMB...

  • 41 is better

  • I'll give my generally accurate interpretation of some of the lyrics. Starting at the 3:06 mark Dave sings some of his best improv lyrics of all-time IMO. He says "Turn your head and pray! It will save, it will save a world and feel it grow! Ah damn the war. Don't fear this way, don't fear dying or growing old. But fear not doing it with grace and hope. Oh don't go kicking and biting ah! The game will soon be over and you'll wonder, why you still know this time on our planet."

  • its about a fight he and a friend got into

  • any idea what the rest of the lyrics are to the song or where i might be able to find them?

  • go to dmbalmanac. searc for lyrics they have lyrics from 3 shows.. not this exact one but that will give you the general idea of the lyrics.

  • i have no idea what he is saying and i don't think he does either

  • the great thing about Dave is that he really does know what he's saying.

  • great post, i miss the old days. this shit was so fresh when they first started. and about the ovation, ive never been a big fan but they are great stage guitars. i have a ton a dmb bootlegs dating back to about 93, if anyones interested message me

  • I haven't red the whole list so post i might be saying something already said, but he's not playing an Ovation he's playing a Gibson Chet Atkins SST

  • is he singing actual lyrics or making up words? I try to sing along and I have no idea wtf he is saying lol

  • ".....a song about staying back"

  • "this is a song about...." what does he say at the start?

  • Wow this version is awesome...I love little intro singing thing

  • can anyone tab that riff

  • anyone have any other songs from this show?

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar he's playing in this video. It looks like a Chet Adkins i think?

  • Yeah that's a Chet

  • Yeah Chet Adkins with the little stars on the frets. sweet guitar!

  • its the guitar he used mostly in the begining of their career. He said it cut through the band better then any other guitar.

  • One of the my favorite bands and favorite songs..

  • Hmm. I like this. Such a pleasant subtle change. Dave's the man.

  • I love finding really early versions of songs like this

  • Dave rules!...even if he did sing like Tracy Chapman back then...

  • this is bad as shit

  • Keep in mind a few things...if this is 9-1-1995 remember then that I believe a few days later DMB played in Hershey, PA at Hershey Park and played what we all know as the typical version of #41.

  • Nope. In 1995 all versions were like this, the #41 lyrics that we know now weren't written until the Crash album was recorded at the end of 95 and early 96, and wasn't played live until the 1996 tour. If this song was played in 1995, it sounded more or less like this.

  • DMB did not play Hershey in 2005. They started playing there in 2006, I was there.

  • wrong decade

  • HAHA.. You are right. Correction - 1995/1996

Damn, to think the cost of a ticket weas only $25 back then.

  • hmmm, i only spent $45 for the piedmont park concert

  • Hey I didn't know they had that weird symbol before stand up. what is that thing on the back wall?

  • Are you talking about the elephants or the fire dancer? It's the same "fire dancer" that they've been associated with for years. The one on the Stand Up album is a bit more "polished" version if you will. The elephants have been used in early days on stickers and t's and such. I'm assuming to do with Dave's south african roots.

  • hey focus, watch the "what would you say" music video, the firedancer logo you are referring to makes a few appearances in the video. i think it has been around since the beginning almost...just thought you wuld find that interesting

  • it doesnt even seem like he is saying words

  • He probably isn't. This was when the song (later known as 41) was in its infancy. You can hear many versions of songs by them where it seems like he is making it up as he goes along. I think they get the melody down, and sometimes the words come later.

  • You think Don't Drink The Water evolved into Bartender? You're a dumbass.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. I have really liked this song for years. I really like version, it's a lot different. i cant stop listining to it. WHat funny is i cant understand a word he's saying, so old style dave jammin out and mumbling in is unique cool way. thanks again

  • wow, what a great early clip of an early 41 version

  • 41 Police > #41

  • coffeeJanitor why did u post that nobody asked you idiot.

  • gibson ST [chet atkins]

  • what kind of guitar is he playing?

  • gibson st [chet atkins]

  • This is a bad ass song, but he sings it with different lyrics. Where did you get this? This shit is bad ass. Can download the audio anywhere? Is it on an audio CD? He switches it up, and that makes this song new again.

    Thanks Buddy

  • dave is my greatest source of inspiration in everything. I love him!

  • Nice! VERY Nice!!

  • Actually Weight of the World was played in 1996, in 1997 it evolved to Leave me Praying, which evolved into Don't Drink the Water. Both of them were preludes to DDTW.

41 Police also was only played in 1995 before final lyrics were set and the song became #41.

  • I cannot stop listening to this version of this song, I almost like it better than the newer 41, DMB rules

  • I have a .mp3 audio file of this song if you want me to upload to sendspace you could download it then.

  • would u please upload this orignial one, id love to download it

  • 41e Police 1995-09-01 audio only

    sendspace dot com file 42crfm

    41police dmb1995-09-01 video

    sendspace dot com file z0qpi3

  • please, please, re-upload that video file!! it's not available anymore

  • Wish I could, my hard drive died about 4 months ago, I don't have a backup of it.

  • Did you lose all of those videos? If so it is quite fortunate for all of us that you uploaded them here.

  • Not all, I still have Van Rypers Festival and the Gorge ones.

  • what a shame :/

but thank`s anyway for uploading it on youtube!

  • Glad to share them with you, I know there is some software out there that lets you download videos from Youtube - they free stuff leaves watermarks on the video. If you pay something like $30.00 for the full version it doesnt leave watermarks. If you buy that software and download it can you send me the link back so I can have it again.

  • pretty awesome

  • holy shit

  • i think don't drink the water was originally called "leave me praying." weight of the world is a grateful dead cover dmb played.

  • actually both songs were different steps in the evolution of don't drink the water, both originally dave's as well

  • love 95-98 dmb. the years they were the most like themselves

  • this summer's album is more like the UTTAD/Crash days than ever before. Pure joy awaits. BTW have you checked out Shotgun at all? WaterWine has the best version (audio wise)

  • they always sound like themselves. whatever they decide to make is great because its pure. I'm content as long as DMB makes music they are happy with and not just pleasing a small faction of fans who want the first 3 albums again.

  • Dave went and wrote the songs for Everyday by himself with Ballard so the band didn't have any choice about what they were playing. A big break in tradition.

The same thing happened with Stand up, only this time with Batson. This album was also much more laid-back in the studio and the band quite literally didn't out in that much effort.

Many of the band members have expressed their dissapointment in the past two albums, so they really weren't happy.

  • ok?

  • cause it was originally titled 41 police and developed into number 41 such as weight of the world developed into dont drink the water

  • and dont drink the water developed into Bartender

  • actually no, theyre two separate songs. but it would be like what will become of me into pantala or dont burn the pig into pig

  • Not really. It can be argued that the lyrics to Leave Me Praying (which musically turned into DDTW) are similar to early versions of Bartender, DDTW did NOT become Bartender. They are completely different songs, both of which are still played full band. Typically when a song evolves into another the early version is abandoned.

  • I dont know, they sound really similar. I actually tried learning Bartender and I ended up playing DDTW by accident. In fact, you can switch the intros for both and they still sound really good.

  • I've heard this version before but why is it called "Police" instead of just an early #41?

  • because they thought it sounded like the police

  • the police song 'spirits in the material world' sounds a lot like this

  • there's the reason its named 41 police...saw this just this other day...it was the 41st song in that batch of songs and it sounded like a police song, hence the name 41 police...later shortened to 41 when they recorded it in the studio

  • This is a great early 41... I have several of these before the song fully became #41. Awesome song!

  • Very awesome. Makes me laugh about the times I've seen them and they were playing new songs and dave made up lyrics on the spot (or noises). It's always cool that they share the new songs before they're finished.
