If you look, in the end, the 'finger loop' you'd normally use to open the knife catches on his waistband. That mod classifies a knife as 'waved' -- still legal across the US and faster than a switchblade anyway.

Actually, It's not the finger loop.  The "finger loop" is still there, there's just another hook above it.

There's a video on here of someone achieving the same effect with a cable/zip tie through the hole on the blade. Catches on the edge of the fabric and opens the blade like that.
