  • awesome as Zico was I think the Liverpool players only were too exhausted from shagging Jap girls there

  • Lol

    Angry scousers on youtube

Zico fucked Liverpool up, look at their faces in the video. That doesn't look like a bloke who doesn't care

  • one of the greatest player of all time

  • awesome! but i read in kennys book they didnt care about these games

  • Flamengo showing that Liverpool were not the best team in the world plus Zico>>>>Dalgalish.

  • @virtue08mofo Zico is simply the best!!!He is way better than Dalglish...

    Flamengo Sempre!! SRN!

  • Never seen names on the backs of shirts in a pre-90s match before.

  • Disliked purely because of the music. Zico was a magnificent player. Football, played that way, is a wonderful game. Let it speak for itself.

  • dire music

  • All very good and not disputing Zico's brilliance but the reds had been on the piss all week and never took this game seriously...

  • @mozzaretti Not to mention that they were going through an unusually poor run-of-form at the time.

  • @mozzaretti Bad loser excuse :-) That team had 4 players of the 1982 squad. Liverpool didn't have the same kind of talent then (although they had some good players like Souness)

  • Hansen is all over the place in defence, even getting nutmegged at 1:22.

  • This was our greatest passing team (English) getting shown how to play football. It is the same today, we are still miles behind the rest of the world when it comes to creativity and skill. The Charles Reep pilgrims should take note, kicking it as far up the pitch as possible is not how the game should be played.

  • The pitch looks perfect for the South American's style. The would struggle to play the ball along the ground with the typical British weather. In the 70s it wasn't unusual for British teams to play in torrential conditions, so their style was different by necessity.

  • I'm a Liverpool fan...that was uneal Zico is like Zidane!

  • @celtickoala he´s better

  • That last play... are you kidding me. If only it went in

  • The backheel at 2.43 is one of the most beautiful things I've seen on a football pitch - shockingly good.

  • Been a Liverpool fan since the 70's and recall the game very well. That generation of Brazilians were amazing and Zico in particular was incredible. I remember being devastated when they lost in the '82 WC. Still pains me to this day.

  • I recall this as a young Liverpool supporter but have never seen it. Zico, even in this short edited version, is a class apart. This is the essential dfifference between British football and the continential version now practiced by Barca - one is wholly at ease with the ball and one is not, for the most part. Added note: another mess up by Grobelaar.

  • Zico exactly has playing similar style like me

  • @Fatlancer8 You mean you have a similar playing style to Zicos.

  • qual o nome da musica no final?

what is the name of the song in the end?

  • Que Maravilha!

  • zico = legend

  • wait... zico took free kick from that position and he didn't score? unbelievable!

  • Zico >>>>>>>> Maradona

  • 2:59 WOOW

    QUE SELEÇÃO ERA ESSA!!

    SIMPLESMENTE ESPETACULAR!!

    Zico Forever

  • Anyone can tell me the name of the song in the end?

  • European football after the Total Football Feynoord - Ajax - Bayern era went into decline both tactically and technically.

It only recovered with the Milan or Arrigo Sacchi.

Flamengo's fluid 4-5-1/ 4-3-3/ 3-4-3 was way above anything played in Europe at that time.

  • @armbar

Um, Manchester United disagrees with you and they have two world titles in their resume (1999 Intercontinental Cup over Palmeiras 1-0 and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup over LDU Quito).

If you want to be the best in the world, you have to beat the best outside of Europe too.

Manchester United, AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, Porto and Bayern Munich they proved it. Liverpool is the only team that has yet to do it.

  • @armbar

But in order to really, really be the best in the world, you have to beat the best outside of Europe too like teams from South America and Asia.

What's the matter? Is LFC scared against teams outside of Europe like Sao Paulo and such?

Besides when Manchester United won those two world titles that I mentioned, they went on to win two EPL titles in 2000 and 2009.

  • @armbar

Whoever wins on Saturday, they're just champions of Europe.

Just like Sao Paulo, when they played Liverpool in 2005, they are just Copa Libertadores CONMEBOL champions before the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup final. When they beat LFC, they're world champions.

When Manchester United and Barcelona won their FIFA Club World Cup finals in 2008 and 2009, they're recognized as Champions of England or Spain, Champions of Europe and Champions of the World.

  • @armbar

Um, you're the one who still doesn't get it and you're the one who's retarded as fuck.

The FIFA World Cup is for international country teams jackhole. The fact that a successful European Cup/UEFA Champions League club like Liverpool don’t care about this FIFA Club World Cup championship is easy to explain….FEAR!!!

If FIFA call it Club World Cup…so who win it is World Champion, and the best club of the world in that year. It’s simple!

  • @armbar

Um, you not making fun of me. It's the truth.

You can diss about the FIFA Club World Cup all you want, but if you don't prove it against teams from outside of Europe, you're not a World Champion for that year and it's a missed opportunity.

LFC keep whining about "Oh, this messes up our schedule" and other excuses because they're so afraid.

  • @armbar

Um, there are two World Cups.

One for Clubs: FIFA Club World Cup contested for the champion clubs from all six continental confederations and the host nation (UEFA Champions League, CONCACAF Champions League, CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, AFC Champions League, CAF Champions League and the OFC Champions League).

Don't forget their predecessor: the Europe/South America Cup.

One for country teams: FIFA World Cup by the senior men's national teams of the members of FIFA.

    I win, you lose.

  • Comment removed

  • @armbar Nottingham Forest and other european clubs didn't go because they feared the bad refereeing they found in the early 70s in Uruguay and Argentina. That's why it was changed to Tokyo.

  • @armbar

And if you don't believe me, go ask your captain Steven Gerrard how he felt when Liverpool lost to Sao Paulo in the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup final. He was crying.

  • @joesakic91 Ok he was crying, so what, he lost the focking cup, that only means he loves the club and wants to win trophys with Liverpool that is something positive

  • @joesakic91 by the way Liverpool were the better team that 2005 final

  • @OrthodoxScouser

Yeah, but who got the job done? Sao Paulo did, Liverpool didn't.

  • @armbar

Here's what Wayne Rooney said after Manchester United won the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup

under "Rooney fires Man Utd to club world cup glory" from Stuff Sport New Zealand.

"If we hadn't won it would have been difficult going back home. We would probably have been on a downer and it would have had a knock-on effect. Now we can go back with lots of confidence. It's been a childhood dream. I just looked at my phone and I had a message saying 'Congratulations – you're a world champion'

  • @armbar

So, you're the one who's horseshit.

Liverpool is the only legendary team that has yet to win an ACTUAL world title.

Until that happens, you're just champions of England and champions of Europe that has yet to win a world title against teams outside of Europe.

  • @armbar Champions League is regarded NOW as the pinnacle of club football, not in the early 80s when the best south americans (specially the best brazilians) played in their own leagues. And the definitive proof is in this video.

It wasn't a compulsory game, as you said many teams didn't take part because of the bad refeering in Argentina and Uruguay. If Liverpool wasn't interested, they would NEVER travel half of the world to play a match in the middle of their season.

  • @armbar

We can agree to disagree 24/7, but at the same time, you know a lot of Liverpool players including Steven Gerrard are saying that night in the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup final, "We missed our opportunity to show that we're the best in the world had we beaten Sao Paulo."

  • @joesakic91 we were the better team vs sau paulo, but in 1981 no team could have stopped zico

  • ZICO GENIUS!

  • foi Zico e +10

hey hey hey o Zico é nosso rei

    SRN

  • destruiu o liverpool

  • He was a great player, no doubt. However the pitch, climate and conditions in general suited Flamengo better than Liverpool. This was the Red's on a bad day thats all. Would have liked to see Zico and Flamengo do that on a cold wet winters night on a muddy pitch. Would never happen, Liverpool would have won 5 0.

  • @DBRYAN1979 That's why the match was played in a NEUTRAL field. Neither english neither brazilian were used to play in there. Brazil has a 12h difference to Japan. Its not easy to get used to such big time zone difference like that. And december is winter in Japan. If the match were in Rio de Janeiro the wouldn't wearing these long-sleeve shirts. And Flamengo would have its supporters there. Look the game Vasco x ManU, in 2001, for exemple.

  • @DBRYAN1979

For shame. If you can't acknowledge the artistry of Zico, and how it made the game impossible for Liverpool to win, then something's amiss! At some point you have to give up the parochialism and take a wider view, at which point you just feel pride at being a member of the same species as Zico. Souness said aftewards that he couldn't get within two yards of him all night.

  • @DBRYAN1979 I agree on that but south american players are used to hard pitches and they use one touch football and do not dwell on the ball much of the time the ball goes in the direction its rolling, unlike european soccer of that time when square passing and a sweeper system was common and the dreaded offside trap! Lets see how the qatar world cup is played....its gonna be SLOW!

  • @DBRYAN1979 Such a poor attitude to football, typically English. We praise players who tackle hard, defenders who clear the ball out into touch, and big oafs up front to get in peoples' way. This is why we will continue to fail in future World Cups until our philosophy and attitude to what is important in football changes. It'sall about possession and technique.

  • @DBRYAN1979 The climate in Tokyo in december is very similar to London's climate. And never, never, never Liverpool could win 5 x 0 a match like this. But Flamengo almost did :-)

Its just illusional. Flamengo was a far better team than Liverpool.

  • @ls121231 For a start Liverpool is nowhere near London? Secondly, the average high in Tokyo in December is 54.3 F - in Liverpool it would be snowing! Next look at that pitch! its baked hard like concrete... you know like pitches in Rio de Janeiro. This was only one game, and it was at the start of the season when Liverpool where not traditionally in form. It was at the end of the Brazillian season when Flamengo had great momentum. Result means nothing.

  • @Danazawa Revisionist nonsense.

  • @Danazawa Tokyo is much more far from Rio than it is from London. About the climate, it was summer in Rio de Janeiro (we`re on the southern hemisphere) and winter in Liverpool, that's what I meant. 54.3 F is only registered in Rio in the winter - in June and July, not December!

About the pitch, I think it's a bad loser excuse put the blame on the pitch. Why you just don't recognize the obvious, like many others - that this Flamengo team was truly outstanding?

  • what an artist

  • he made them look like school boys!

  • Messi is a little Zico, with a bit less quality.

  • @Pitonto .m,esso might be a better dribbler but zico was more compelte. better vision, passing, free kicks, tactical brain, etc.like them both my self but prefer zico.

  • a bit like messi i think

  • @belkadimus999 you mean Messi is a bit like him

  • just look how shitty the pitch is aswell... imagine how good he'd be in the modern game now

  • I watched this match when it was on the television in 1981. The manager was that confident that he said it would be 10-0. and 5-0 at half time. It was 3-0 at half time and it remained that way. Awesome game. One game that I will remember very fondly, and was chuffed to bits when I found it on here. Thanks, Kevwee1.

  • DIS IS SHIT!

  • @kofipat1 Why? because your Brit ass was whipped ?

  • what's the last song called? sounds like an enya song.

  • Souness's confession says it all. After Pelé, ZICO was the greatest player ever. As one Brazilian critic once famously said, "if he didn't win the World Cup, that's too bad for the World Cup".

  • zico & laudrup my altime favorites

  • My goodness me. This is the best football I have ever seen!

  • I'm a Liverpool fan, and i have to say, zico could have won just by himself against that liverpool team. He was just too good. he deserved to win a world cup.

  • im a liverpool fan and remember 1981 ,am in awe of zico what a player that flamengo team were awesome and deserved to be crowned world club champs footy ain't the same no zico, socrates, pele, rivalino, jarzinio, tostio legends from 70',80's

  • Liverpool wish to have 4 more players to stop Zico. lol

  • MENGOOOOOO

  • South American sides TAKE THEM Seriously and believe you me so do the Italians and Spanish, Trust the English to find Excuses like their national team, but I will Give credit to Man United who did win a couple of them.

  • Zico Zidane Zico Zidane Zico Zidane = Genii

  • Zicos dribbling technique is beautiful on the eyes

  • I'm English and you I agree that Brazilian players are far better technically than UK players. That was true in 1981 and it is true now....witness the England v. Brazil game in the UAE last month,

However, these games were treated more like exhibition games,....nobody took them seriously like they did the European Cup.....which Liverpool has won a number of times.

Still Zico was a great player.

  • @xpat73 yeah definitely u r right, but theres no way any team in the world beat flamengo from 80 to 83, of course flamengo got some defeats, but this is just sport, sometimes u win, sometimes u loose, but zico's flamengo was the best football tem ever

  • @xpat73 I'm brazilian, but I'm from south, I don't like the teams from Rio and São Paulo, and I agree in oart with you. I do believe European Cup is much more important for you guys, but I also think that Liverpool fans insist on that because Liverpool has never won the Intercontinetal Cup, because Manchester United fans take the Intercontinental Cup much more seriously, is that a coincidence?

  • @xpat73 You're probably right if you consider actual teams, but in 1981 nearly all brazilian players was playing in our national league. I mean, Brazilian league was far better than any european league at the time.

Liverpool was a very good english side, with 1 or 2 world class players while Flamengo had one of the greatests squads of all time.

There is no comparision. 3-0 in the 1st half.

  • simply the best, better than all the rest

  • brazilian footie was grewat in the 80s but not anymore

  • I am also huge fan of Brazilian football and its great players like Zico, Pele,Junior,Socrates etc but Brazilian soccer of today is bland in comparison, having said that it's far superior to what the English Premier League has to offer.

  • gramado excelente Zico jogou bonito nesse jogo

  • That was awesome. Flamengo will live forever in my heart.

What's the name of the song played in the game in this vid? I really want to know.

    Thanks.

  • the song is called CHILDREN by ROBERT MILES.

  • Great vid mate, but don't think it was a humiliation for Liverpool. One of the players (can't recall, possibly Alan Hansen) said the players never took it seriously and treated the trip as a three day long piss up.

  • It was deeply humiliating.

Liverpool actually stayed a full week in Tokio while Flamengo arrived 3 days before the game having decided a championship in Brazil in 3 rough games the week before. This was Flamengo´s 7th game in 21 days.

Also, Liverpool players treated Flamengo with disdain, they thought they had the best team in the world and were trashed.

After reality showed up, Paisley, Thompson and Souness paid tribute to the best team in the world.
