That was a hot road. I like how they had the HOV lane divided and how it went up above the rest of the road on parts of the freeway. I would have been about as thrilled as Dwight Eisenhower would have if he saw the freeway.
I had heard so much about the Katy Freeway, but I never knew just how massive the upgrade west of the 610 Loop was. Orlando would solve it's road problems on I-4 for the next 50 years with just half of that lane-width. Absolutely insane!
Houston Se Conoce Como La Ciudad De Los Puentes Sabes Porque Hay Muchas Intersecciones Que Tienen Mas De Un Puente Y Tambien Porque Hay Mucho Elevados
only thing I dislike about the Katy Freeway video is the whiny female singer (Nadia Ali) ugh, why is it that women have to sing about cheating lying men? ugh, deal with your drama some other way, get over it.
Awsome video. the 401 on one particular section is still wider then the 1-10 katy but dont get me wrong its pretty close in terms of width. the 401 has over 30 lanes just before getting on the 403. Check out google maps and you'll see=)
@Universal1011 untill u can find solid info that the 401 has 30 regular lanes your case of it being the world widest freeway is dismissed. when it comes to counting lanes on a highway im sorry you do not count ramps after they leave the innitial route. ** the widest section of Ontario Rte 401 is 20 LANES ** NO MORE NO LESS. AND MOST OF IT IS INFACT ONLY 16 LANES.
@ScrewdUPClickV2 - Correct, widest part is 20 lanes and only for a short section. It generally ranges between 10 and 16, so the Katy has it beat. (It could certainly use a Katy treatment, but good luck finding community support for it)
@Universal1011 specific info collect from the wikipedia route page .. Highway 401 uses a collector-express roadway configuration, ranging from 10 to 18 lanes wide, to manage its high traffic volumes.
katy freeway info - In Houston, from the western suburb of Katy to downtown, I-10 is known as the Katy Freeway. This section was recently widened to as much as 26 lanes.
Great video! Is this seriously wider than 401 in the Toronto area? I always had heard in the past(and when I did my own research on this) that 401 through Toronto was the very widest freeway in North America, but maybe I'm wrong here, and this is wider. I'm sure someone else on youtube knows the answer, for sure.....
@prfsnlwannabe I think your confusing the widest vs the busiest. 401s widest section is 20 lanes. I-5 eltoro y is in 2nd place with 22 or 24 llanes. And I-10 Houston is in first with 26 continuous lanes. Most of the 401 is a 16 lane dual dual. There are freeways in America that are wider than that. Another example would be i-75/85 the downtown connector in Atlanta. The 401 holds the title for the busiest in north America though.
@prfsnlwannabe As far as actual right of way. I'm not sure what both corridors span. But that doesn't really matter anyways. If you wanna get technical about that data. It's I-8 in so cal at the ko-pah grade. I believe the center row spans 1or 2 miles wide.
@ScrewdUPClickV2 Hmmm, I definitely was not confusing my question with which freeway was the busiest. My question was only on which freeway was the widest in terms of number of lanes, not the busiest. I guess myself I did get confused in the process when I was trying to remember which freeway was the widest, since I read the 401 freeway in Toronto was #1 for something in North America(and I now remember thanks to your comment it was traffic, not # of lanes).
@prfsnlwannabe I wouldn't have said that in this video otherwise if it wasn't true. I'm sure another road fan will tell you the same that I have. Search widest freeway on google and see wats comes up. And go to wikipedia and search freeway. Scroll halfway down to records and look 401 is not mentioned for widest , only busiest. Trust me I know a few things in my hobby lol
@ScrewdUPClickV2 One last thing, I wasn't getting that technical with my question. LMAO, I wouldn't have guessed I-8 had the widest right of way though, something makes me think 401 in the Toronto area would have a wider right of way. Maybe it really is I-8 in the San Diego area, though. FreewayBrent(or Jim) would probably know the definite answer, for sure. Although of course that wasn't my original question!
@prfsnlwannabe: Not sure how technical we're getting, but the eastbound and westbound lanes are separated by at least a mile, if not more, over the grade. I'm not sure if that really constitutes as physical ROW, however.
@prfsnlwannabe lets wait 2-3 years and see some the biggest corridor upgrades that txdot has planned . its a very small possibility from what i understand that the title has a chance to switch. but its highly likely that the section of i-5 in california might loose there spot for 2nd. take a look at the lbj express lanes , and the dfw connector in dallas,tx. both corridors will push of excess of 20 lanes
@ScrewdUPClickV2 TXDOT has always been on the ball when it comes to keeping their freeways modernized, based on all the various videos I've seen(besides your own videos). It's just too bad the only Texas freeway I've ever been on sadly remains just I-10 in El Paso, since I happened to tag along with a church I occasionally did stuff with on a church work camp trip they did in Mexico just outside of Ciudad Juarez. I'd love to return to TX, and see freeways for myself in other parts of the state!
I was forced to move to Mn from Tx for work. This video hits me in the gut. It is a God given right to be able to hit the freeway, turn up the trance music and glide to your destination. Without having to constantly hit your brakes or enduring miles of city blocks, stoplights, and potholes. I have to endure subaru's driving below the speed limit in the left lane. Texans know how to do it right! Thanks dude!
@tracifritz bro you've obviously never driven in houston...traffics sucks, roads suck, freeways suck.....but they are getting better slowly, very slowly with construction that has been going on since the begining of time. dont let anyone tell you otherwise about houston roads...i drive them everyday. however, i-10...yeah i'll say its not bad

@angelboricua4t i agree . but i had to use the word possibly .. didnt wanna create a uproar you know .. but hey facts are facts .. i have seen alot of metro freeways , and i cant find one that even comes close to compare .. i mean of course you have the 401 in toronto . which is a dual dual .. but ill stack our frontage roads up to them , because there basicaly the same , and see who comes out on top. Houston Does lol . there is no contest
@ScrewdUPClickV2 there are atleast 3 sections seperate corridors on this freeway , that i know top more than 30 lanes , including frontage .. max on the 401 ive seen is 20 , and for a short while .
Very cool. That's one wide road, and it has an impressive HOV system. I wouldn't include frontage roads into the lane count as they intersect with surface streets and thus aren't true "through/thru" lanes. Still, that's one wide highway!
@haljackey i was just making a point at that beltway interchange , for people to understand how much of a corridor this is . thank you very much for watching
I didn't realize the Katy widening was a combined effort betwen the HCTRA and TxDOT, although it makes perfect sense now as to why the freeway is so wide.
@FreewayBrent the freeway prior , was 6-8 lanes . handling 250k daily . traffic was so bad during and long after peak times , you could walk to your destination faster . i remember a average trip prior took 45 mins or more 610 to tx6. not to mention is was perhaps the most outdated urban freeway at the time .
I'm in love with how Texas designs those super long exit and entry ramps to expressways. BTW, didn't Texas place those TX stars onto the pillars of more than just the I-10/Sam Houston Tollway interchange? I thought the High Five interchange in Dallas had them too, and a few others throughout the state, if I recall what I remember while watching some of your other Texas videos correctly.
