Man, you can see Ringo's frustration with their poor live musicianship at this point. He expressed as much on the Anthology. The big shock for them at this show according to that doc was that for the first time in years, the could actually hear themselves after years of not being able to. They couldn't fake the performance, and it made them nervous as all get out.

That's just John doing his crazy talk.. he started doing it for laughs during the Shea Stadium concert a year before because the crowd was loud in a frenzy (and nobody would hear him anyway).. but he kept doing it when he could or couldn't hear the crowd during these concerts. Awesome.
