Interesting to read how many of us were struck by this incredible piece on our first hearing. I was 14, first day at Prep School. I was stunned and understood for evermore that there is no glory and no winners in War, just pain, suffering and misery. Thank you Benjamin Britten.
What a stellar confluence, the rededication, the choice of Britten, Britten's perfect choice of texts, his canniness about the theater of such a piece and its occasion, these soloists ~ all together it is a brilliant work and an amazing performance ~ the whole still, years later, does not fail to move deeply.
I usually bawl during the last movement. It is the only time in the work where all forces come together, both orchestras, all three soloists, and both choruses resolving the dead souls to rest. Subliminal!
I sang the childrens part in this requiem and I think I am blessed for the wonderful experience. I would do it 1,000 times over if I had the chance. I have my part stuck in my head all the time. This experience will be with me for the rest of my life. Thank you.
I sang Britten's War Requiem in a boys' choir in America in the early '80s. It opened my ears, mind and heart to music, language and history -- most especially to "the pity of war". It is arguably one of the greatest musical works of the 20th Century. This is a powerful and moving video presentation: I thank you for it.
I sang in this, also at Coventry cathedral, with some of the original artists, but somewhat later, in the mid 70s as I recall. Awesome piece, I love it!
I remember as a 10 year old watching the rededication of Coventry Cathedral on our little 12 inc Bw Tv.. I guess I found the music rather strange then but have grown to love it in the 40 odd years since.

Thanks! Sorry to be so late in responding to your query. The software that I used here is Windows Moviemaker. I just started making videos a few months ago and am learning more with each one on how to use the various transitions and effects to enhance the project. Painstaking work, but fun.
Maybe you have a different edition of Moviemaker. Which Windows operating system do you have? Mine is Vista. My Moviemaker has several pan effects and multiple ones to zoom in or zoom out from different parts of the picture. There's a section of "transitions" and one of "effects".
I've just discovered that the Windows XP version of Moviemaker(that's what I have) doesn't support the pan and zoom effects, but I found an excellent program called Story Teller which does.
Thanks again for uploading your videos. Britten is one of my favourite composers and the War Requiem, one of my favourite choral works. Your videos fit the music perfectly.
Karen, this series is as arresting as anything I've seen. Your images, painstakingly put together and so apt, only add to the desperate attack on our senses, the lessons of history and any intellect that any of us may have.
I remember the re-dedication of the Cathedral. I remember the often heated discussions in the student bars about how to ban war. The Cuban missile crisis was unfolding and concentrating minds quite beautifully.
I'll stop myself there and just congratulate you warmly.
Wow, thank you Barry! This one meant a lot to me. This work is very close to my heart and I wanted to give it my best. You say you remember the re-dedication of the Coventry Cathedral? How I wish I could go back in time and actually be at the first performance of this work.

What a memory that must be to have been in Coventry for the rededication and to have heard this for the first time.

Very beautiful. Thank you!!!
May I ask what software you used to achieve the slow zoom and pan effects?

I have Windows Moviemaker too, but as far as I know, it doesn't have the pan and zoom effect. I'll have to check that I haven't overlooked it.
Thanks for replying

I had a feeling that might be what you had. I'm glad you found a program that will allow you to experiment with the effects.
Britten is also a great favorite of mine and the War Requiem supreme. I'm happy you were pleased with my efforts here. :)
