@allgood2000 Not really actually, if the source was the burner, then that doesn't just give off CO gas, but other gases such as NOx and some traces of Hydro Carbons in either case, and the latter I can guarantee you can smell.
If you smell the exhaust of a car that runs a rich mixture, that smell is purely HC (Hydro Carbons) and comes from unburned fuel.
But CO is definitly the biggest threat in that case :P
@allgood2000 Another therory for her stating she smell gas was she was drifting off from conciousness and during that period she may have had flash back to the concentration camp in Germany and re-living part of that experience and seeing these firemen in "strange garbs" she connected to the concentration camp. Just an thought.
Bloody hell I hate it when people I've rescued talk about how god spared them. No, god had nothing to do with this, quick thinking and the person who called for rescue had everything to do with this. Didn't say anything about the rescuers or the gas company dude, just "god helped me" little does she know that had no one come, god wouldn't have done anything for them and they'd both be dead!
I remember seeing this video when I was just six years old! When I first saw this I had no idea the name of the show was Rescue 911. But as soon as I heard Bob say "Something is wrong" at 00:29 I said THIS IS IT! I never thought I would see this again anywhere! But then I also remember that orange light and phone sound at 02:23 That scared the living daylights out of me! In fact, my dad brought me to Toys R Us to cheer me up. That was how much this video scared me when I was six.
This show used to freak me out too and scare me as well when I was a little kid. It's a great show, just not something you want to watch when you're six. I know how you feel.
Evidently, you must have an IQ of idiot or less as you obviously have dificulty in spelling, grammar and proper usage of the English language. For your edification, have someone who speaks English read this to you: "basterd" is correctly spelled bastard; "sepially" - are you trying to communicate specially? In any case, I hope you can come some day up to third grade reading and spelling comprehension level.
Well Carbon Monoxide can cause blurred vision and impaired judgment, so it stands to reason that in some people it might make them think they smell something when in fact they aren't. I wondered about that myself and I just thought of it this morning. I've actually read that Carbon Monoxide poisoning turned out to be the culprit behind a lot of haunted house stories. People thought they heard and saw stuff that wasn't there. It was CO. So Magda could have thought she did smell gas because of it.
i am a firefighter, and you cant smell carbon monoxide, video is partly wrong with that woman saying she smelled gas. I went to a call once where the house was at 900 parts per million and the people were chilling on the couch, looked like they were real relaxed, really stoned, cant imagine what it can do to your body
there is nothing really to look for, i recommend you installing a carbon monoxide monitor in your home, They are available now as a fire and carbon monoxide alarm in one console.
first of all...if you start to feel light headed smash the nearest window and get out of the house...carbon gas is odorless and colorless..its a silent killer...DO NOT re enter the house
@peteboy1113 Carbon Monoxide does not have an odor. Especially with gas furnances a carbon monoxide detector should be in the house beside smoke detectors. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning range from mild flu-like symptoms (such as a headache or stomachache without fever) to severe signs of heart and brain damage. Prolonged exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide over many days may result in death
I used to live where I had service through Northern Illinois Gas (Now Nicor). I was able to smell the sulfur, since they run a sulfur sump from the connection point. It is faint, but after a minute you get a real big nosefull of sulfur/rotten egg smell.
About $500 for trip depending on mileage and priority. A confirmed heart attack will cost you less than a sprained ankle if the mileage is the same. The supplies used however will re-add to the cost (more stuff gets used for the heart attack than the sprained ankle).
It's weird he says, "We noticed there was no smell of natural gas, so most likely if there was a problem it was carbon monoxide." Natural gas isn't poisonous, though.. explosive when it is a high enough percentage of the air, but not poisonous.
Yet George from the runaway boxcars segment lost his wife in the incident and he didn't choke up the least bit. And I'm sure he loved his wife just as much. Personally, I think Bob ought to be more like George- and exercise a little emotional stoicism- at least for an official interview.
Everybody experiences things differently. Emotions affect everyone in a different way, while some people can keep their tears buried when a loved one dies, others bawl at the memory of a close call. Sometimes its harder to think about what could have been than face the inevitability of what has already happened...
Plus it had been four years since George's wife died, so he had more time to get over it. It had probably been a year or less between the time this incident happened to the time the segment was filmed.
Exactly my point- this story was NOT a tragedy at all, because they got lucky thanks to the gas man not giving up. George's story was definitely tragic, since his wife didn't end up as lucky as Bob's.
I got CO poisoning working at a Taco Bell restaurant when I was 18. They didn't have the exhust fan on over the gas burners. It was the worst feeling. I felt really dizy, hot, nauseous and got a headache. I went home for the day. For some reason I was the only one that got sick from it.
yea dumbfucker i realized i made that mistake but i do believe i corrected that in my post yesterday...i'm a volunteer fireman and if u want a definition of an SCBA please ask...
I agree that the guy is stupid for trying to call the gas company, among others. When someone falls sick like that, DEFINITELY call 911. At least that's what I'd have done if I were him.
Also, someone please tell me: Is he (Bob) is not a splitting resemblance to actor Pat Hingle?
From what I remember, if I remember right, (aint waiting for the video to load again considering it takes ages on here), he DIDN'T KNOW if someone was in trouble. He called the gas company first and the cops when he knew for certain - a definite call is likely to be responded to a lot faster than "I think, maybe, umm..."
CARBON MONOXIDE: You can buy a detector (it changes colour but doesn't have an alarm) really cheaply from Wilkinsons (UK) or probably from a similar place that sells lots of different stuff. One with an alarm is more expensive but not too expensive especially considering how important it is
Well I can understand ones that don't work being banned, but why on earth would you put one in the basement when it has no alarm? You're supposed to put it where you can see it.
I think this is actually the only carbon monoxide segment I've seen where they wore masks. There were two other episodes I remember where all the rescuers went into the house without masks.
He was the one who initiated the rescue. He could have just assumed the people weren't home and decided to come back later. If he had done that, no one would have called the fire department and the Browns would have died.
Some states, to my understanding, have ordinances requiring CO detectors to be installed in public establishments. I don't think it'd be the least bit unreasonable to mandate the installation of them in all businesses and private homes in all states. They don't call it the 'silent killer' for nothing.
if you guys want rescue 911 on season one dvd or a best of dvd or others ,go to tvshowsondvd, com and vote we are up to 433 vote ,that is a lot of vote ,so all who have voted ,thank you so much ,and please all rescue 911 fans please vote on rescue 911 ,take care all God bless
I think it was on Rescue 911. A father was checking his basement heater, but instead of carbon monoxide poisoining, fumes from the heater ignited, causing a fiery backdraft. The backdraft went upwards near the top stairs where his two childern were sitting at. I remember watching the episode that all three were burned completely. The mother was calling 911 for help.
I haven't seen that one in years- I know I've asked about it before, and I don't mean to pester, because I just love being able to watch these shows again, but I would LOVE to see that episode if at all possible! Thanks again!
