I remember seeing this 40 years ago as a kid (the last 1/3 of the show). Looking at the painting in the beginning of this it's totally appropriate for the episode (the female's, er, woman's face in the man's mouth, especially) but MAN some of the artwork in this was gruesome.
The real earwigs don't go in your ears, but they will pinch you if you sleep on the floor. I slept on the floor for back trouble and they would often wake me by pinching me. I hate them. They also put out a stink. Google earwig and you'll see what they are.
My all time favorite Night Gallery. I still think about this episode. It scared me then and it still creeps me out now. Nobody could pull off creepy like Rod Serling.
i was watching Butterfield 8 and thought of this weird, haunting episode i saw a long long time ago. so i typed in lawrence harvey caterpillar twilight zone.
Er fy mod i wedi darllen pryfed clust yn ail ac na allai hyn ddigwydd mewn gwirionedd, nid yw yn fy rhwystro rhag bod yn seico ychydig am fy nghlustiau. Fi 'n weithredol wedi cael gwybedyn bach yn un o fy nghlustiau ac aeth arno'i hun, tywalltwyd perocsid yn fy nghlust, ac arnofio ef allan. Ych. I ddim yn weld sioe meddygol, go meddygol, nid un ffug gyda actorion, ac mae hyn yn ddynes dlawd daeth i mewn gyda chwilen ddu anferth ym mhob un o'r ei glustiau. .
Harvey did not age well--I know he had a lot of health problems and died young. Superb actor, however, right up to the end. Joanne Petit is beyond lovely.
I think most will agree that this is the greatest Night Gallery episode. It has a horrifying, yet appropriate irony. And no monsters or ghosts to provide the horror--simply human evil boomeranged back on itself. By the way, in defense of ear whigs--they don't crawl into ears and eat brains--that is entirely fictitious. They are simply annoying and harmless.
I watched re-runs of Night Gallery in the mid 1980's and thought it was brilliant- the shit that passes for television these days is just pitiful in comparison.
@Spartacus217 man no one could host TV shows like he could... especially anthology shows. His "ole smoky" voice was a classic, too bad the habit killed him prematurely though...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Harvey shows in this the same talent that he showed in the Manchurian Candidate; that he could act stiffly and badly and somehow get away with it. And how hot was Joanna Pettet back then!!! When i was young I was really torn between her and Julie Christie.
To this day earwigs send screams of shivers up and down my spine. I mash every one I see because of this episode. I think shows like Night Gallery and The Outer Limits did more to fuck my sleep up over the last 40 years than anything else. Today's "horror", although more technical and gruesome, doesn't hold a candle to watching Night Gallery on a creepy wind-strewn night in our 100 year old house at the end of that darkly unlit dead end street, right beside the old swamp.
Reminds me of my thoughts after watching Saw. It had a clever little twist at the end but it wasn't close to being scary. The acting was horrifying though.
@here4family: If it makes you feel any better, the human brain itself has no feeling, and an earwig could not bore through your brain. It couldn't get through the bone around the skull. The worst it could give you is an ear infection.
@here4family Yeah, I've been at war with earwigs for many years! Every summer I'm infested with them, yikes! I may love Night Gallery, but this episode is difficult to watch.
@here4family As much as I've read re earwigs and that this could not actually happen, it doesn't stop me from being a bit psycho about my ears. I actually had a tiny gnat in one of my ears and went berserk, poured peroxide in my ear and floated him out. ugh. I did see a medical show, real medical, not a fake one with actors, and this poor lady came in with a huge cockroach in each one of her ears. The ER doc was terrified of bugs but managed to drown them and extricate them.
@here4family Try being born in 63 and having four older sisters that didn;t care if you were scared or not! They watched this every week, and I was allowed to, too. Even though I was less than 10 years old and it scared the crap out of me!!!
This was also an Old-Time Radio program from "Beyond Midnight", circa 1950. The episode was called (oddly enough) "Something On His Mind". I have to admit, I enjoyed the OTR program more; but this was VERY well presented. The radio show was slightly different, but the same story. In fact, it's one of my favorites. Definitely worth a listen. THANKS FOR POSTING!!!
This affected me more than any other episode; I FELT what Laurence Harvey was feeling, (the thought of something inside your head drove me crazy!) I was just mesmerized by his pain and the whole show, what a fantastic episode this was, and as another poster commented, he is superb In The Manchurian Candidate, what a great actor he was. Also Walk on the Wild Side.
Saw this many years ago, and didn't know who Laurence Harvey was. Many years later, I bought a DVD of the original Manchurian Candidate, and Harvey was superb in that. To now know he not only did a Night Gallery, but one of the best ones, is very gratifying. Thank you very much for posting this.
This was his last role, and he was dying of cancer when he filmed this episode-in fact, in the scenes where he's in pain, he had stopped taking his cancer meds and was in pain.
Some "Night Gallery" segments were darker in terms of subject matter but in terms of being able to hold up over time, nothing can match Twilight Zone's artistically superior presentation. Also the fact it was shot in black & white (with the original negatives kept in excellent condition over the years) gives it immortality in a sense.
@MissMael Totaly off subject of the tv show I like the song by Iron Maiden called the prisoner and the first part of the song is the intro to the prisoner.
