great video. i don't have a pressure cooker. what's the daal to water ratio, and what kind of cooking time are we talking if i use a regular covered saucepan?
I am a novice to Indian cooking (I'm German by heritage and this style and its spices are not familiar to me), but I LOVE it. I could eat it every day and I LOVE your site. Do you have an "Indian Cooking 101" video(s) that can take me through the basics? You know, spices, sauces, essential ingredients?
@mikeheilig : We do have 2 videos on "Stocking up the Pantry for Indian Cooking" - Part 1 and 2. Please search for them on our website or on our YouTube Channel. These videos are for spices, lentils, beans that are commonly used in Indian cooking. Hope that helps.
thanks for teh recipe! you said it's important to see the grains separately. I was wondering, is it possible to make this dal like a normal dal tadka that is really liquidy??? thanks!
@mikeheilig : Yes, it is one daal that cooks really fast. You can make it on the stove-top. The water quantity and time - you will have to experiment - sorry :(
Can urad daal be replaced with yellow moong daal? I find the urad daal to be a bit heavy for digestion, so was wondering if this could be replaced with moong daal? Otherwise, a good recipe.
We have not made this daal without a pressure cooker, so we don't have the exact water quantity needed. You can just keep adding a little water at a time until the daal gets cooked. The daal is on the dry side.
it needs meat...

We haven't tried this exact recipe with moong daal but it should work. The amount of water may be different, though.

Daal has to be with lot of liquid...why to make something like a vegetable if thats is not meant to be like that....

Ladies, this looks like a fabulous recipe!
I'd love to try it but I don't own a pressure cooker. Do you have a version of this recipe that doesn't require a pressure cooker?
