Where does that leave using the Blue Snowball mic then? (conspicuously NOT amongst your mic reccommendations). Is the snowball ommitted because it picks up too much surround?
How do you reccommend I record a drum set? Should I build the "poor man's vocal booth" but slightly larger? I have sound coming from the ceiling, could I just place a blanket abouve the drum kit...the basement isnt echoey.
thanks for the tips...a 20. queensize eggcrate from target worked like crazy for me so anyone lookin for soundproofing thats ur best low cost option....trust me it works perfect
hi shee! thank you so much for your informative video! i bought the blankets and the se reflection filter... i built the pvc room but it didn't work out well enough so, in the end, i ended up building a room in my basement as well. two question: 1) do you think using the blankets in the room would be enough or do i have to use those panels? 2. the se reflection filter didn't come with those extra filter pices (the one the is over the mic and behind it. where can i find that?
Hi Shee, I have a budget of $500; Can you please give me a list of important equipments that I can purchase to make and record with my own home studio. I am thinking about using reason or Fruity Loops software to make my instrumental (beats). Your respond is greatly appreciated, thank-you! Oh, my e-mail address is mekiaa78@yahoo.com
Come on.. You're talking about acoustic treatment for producers, and you have no sort of compression placed on your voice? Your voice is very beautiful, but due to the varying dynamics of your voice (which is normal) I'm getting a headache listening... Is this a live recording, or was this pre-recorded?
Hi Shee, I've been looking at thousands of videos all over the net and honestly say that you obviously spent ALOT of time to learn your craft unlike alot of idiots out there. I appreciated the time watching. Keep up the good work.
Nice video but...that all looks expensive as hell I thought you said "cheap" sound proofing? I tried that SE thing and took it back too expensive it worked but I needed the money (yes I'm cheap! it's recession okay), then I thought I'd get something that looked just like it and got one of those SE look alike things. Waste of money cheap foam flimsy metal. I all but gave up then I found this portable booth thing at Soundkitz and that thing was cheap and just like the SEone I paid 300 for.
@SHEEmusic i have a 7ft by 6ft walk in closet do i need to put up foam completly covering all the walls or can i do like diamond shapes containing 4 1ft squares.....on one each wall will that be good enough or will i need to go further btw it will be auralex foam
Wow..its definately dope 2 see a women who knows her craft and what she's talking about. just closed the lease on some studio space this video will diefinate play a major role in saving 4 the budget Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
What are those panels you have for recording acoustic guitar in a non treated room? I can't think of the name for them, i'm trying to buy some like NOW. :(
Im starting from scratch and this video was very informative. I can tell that you are a very intelligent black woman and i would love to ask more questions. keep the videos coming.
OH...another question...I LOVE the PVC pipe booth you made. My own brainchild was to purchase a pretty room screen which, when I'm not recording, screens off the "studio" in the corner of my bedroom; and when I am, serves as something to hang fleece blankets over and I sort of fold it around myself with the mic in the middle. Still, the computer fan is a problem. 1) Could the PVC structure be collapsible (for when my room becomes a bedroom again), and 2) would it screen out the computer fan?
this is great i love this video and this is just what i needed, thank you so much i always got down to recording n stopped because my voice sounds like shit with buzzing but now i know what i need to apply thanks
you are always giving great advice i have as my friend on myspace and i always read those bulletins you be posting.....thanx for the advice you always give
Good ideas. However, acoustic foam not so good compared to rigid fiberglass (price or effectiveness). Remember that the NRC rating is not the proper measurement for sound absorbtion. This is an average of just the midrange bands (250 Hz through 2.0 KHz) and is not useful when comparing materials for recording studios and music rooms. One must consider the absorbtion coeffiecient at each frequency range.
im interested in building the booth out of pvc and audimute sheets, my question is whether or not it will take away alot of the reverb i am getting in my room. and if it will give me a dryer signal for vocals, i was gonna pick up the reflexion filter but the guy at guitar center recomended a $150 mic stand and i wasnt ready to spend that much.
@FiSTFigHT09 well what you do is by the door you remove a long peice of carpet, u cut out a piece of the carpet like under the door area it happened when i use to be in band, a bunch of kids were messing around the soundproof rooms and well they accidently ripped the carpet like under the door and u cud hear everything they were talking about
This was a great video. I just bought the reflexion yesterday. Didn't know about the aurelex. I will pick that up also. The tidbit about the mics is priceless. My current mic is picking up the sound of the furnace pilot light. It's been driving me crazy for the longest. I will try out some other mics to see if I get better results. I'm also going to play around with a noise gate. Your fellow Sheengineer!
Good stuff! In the $0-100 category you can make a Porta-Booth (search YouTube for it) for $25-30. Harlan Hogan's site (Google "portabootharticle") tells you about it and how to make one. Works well and it's portable. Noisy house? Put he Porta-Booth, laptop, and mic in your car and drive to a quiet place and record in your car.
but the the problem zone for vocals are 120 - 350 hz .....so u better get some serious BROADBAND ABSORBERS FOR 200$ .....foam is good to pack things thats it..
@schkeuditzcity It depends on how thick the foam is. I have four inch foam and it works pretty good for low frequency absorption. Just about as well as owens corning or roxul.
@schkeuditzcity look on auralex's master product absorption table for yourself. If you've looked at Bob Gold's table, which I'm assuming you have, even owens corning or roxul doesn't fair that well at 125 hertz, at the same thickness as foam, but at 250 to 500 it starts to distinguish itself from foam, then foam catches up again at about 1-2k.
Hi awsome video i was just wondering what that foam piece is on top of the se reflection filter? lol my girlfreind has moved in so i had to give up my closet space got the se relection filter :-)
Yeah, very informative, articulate and classy. Keep doin ur thing and post up a link to a page where we can sample some of ur recordings to hear the "difference". I'm confident it'll be a success! Okay Ma, Peace.
goto the center of the room your planning to record in and clap. if tou hear any ringing (resonance) then you have to treat the room. make sure theres carpet and no windows in the room.
this depends on the song instrumentation you may be able to supplement Ur natural bass by creating space for instrumentation.) these are the numbers they may change slightly depending upon the track but they are fairly consistent. I hope this helps someone. Before the finances came into play i did quite some creative things myself! LOL some worked many didn't. but those that did I embraced. i have a myspace with some of the songs that I previously recorded as well as some of the newer ones..
also try this cut you vocals @ 4khz to -2.3db this creates the smooth velvet effect(adjust your Q), then increase your 5khz to 1.6db, (the clarity point you r should focus on), next to polish them @8khz increase you Que to 1.3db (careful), next to create the space for you vocals to sound lush you decrease @ 250hz to -1.2db, to reduce the natural rumble of vocals that are generated by the virbration of the lungs to cut between 350-500 hz ( you may want to dercease you bass in the 60-63 hz range
I really really appreciate this video, but if I could be so bold, your audio on this video is spiking or distorting or something - I would look at your levels. It's difficult to listen to this because of the sound, actually. Also, I might invest in a pop filter (or make one out of panty hose! Feel free to make a vid about it!) Like I said, no offense, you're beautiful & great, but audio needs work.
Expanders are okay. I mean they don't work in the environment I am in I actually just sold them and invested into the SE Reflection Filter which is great.
i think (i know!) some people can get a little too techie (or chest beat-y) on studio topics, so it's really good of you to share your knowledge & ingenuity in a concise & practical way.
i think (i know!) some people can get a little too techie (or chest beat-y) on studio topics, so it's really good of you to share your knowledge & ingenuity in a concise & practical way.
i used the mxl 990 for quite a while and i think that most mxl mics are great for beginners on a budget. theyre produce clean sound in a room that is at least somewhat acoustically treated, and they are extremely affordable.
Thank you for putting up this tutorial. Luckily, I already have a AT2020 and yes that IS a good mic! Would you recommend singing in a closed walk-in closet?
What is the name of that soundproof blanket you were using? thanks so much for your video. I love your studio setup, hopefully mines will be there one day!
That was very helpful thank you. I've just purchased a NT1A Rode mic and a mic Insulator much like the one you show at 7:43. Hopefully i won't need to sound proof the whole room, the mic was $520 and the insulator around $300, do you think it'll serve me well?? i'm a vocalist looking at putting together my own home studio. i'll have my own room soon in which to set it up. Any other tips before i start setting everything up?? i've heard you shouldn't set it up near any windows, is that true?
You did a great job putting this video together Shee. Your vids on the usb mics were very helpful as well. Most videos on this topic don't cover several different options.
appreciate u taking the time to explain all this. i wanted to ask what u think is best between the soundproff blankets or the reflection shield, i record in the living room so if i build the booth will tt take up a lot of space and will i be able to take it down easy everyday. or should i just get the reflection filter
Very good vid thanx

also try this cut you vocals @ 4khz to -2.3db this creates the smooth velvet effect(adjust your Q), then increase your 5khz to 1.6db, (the clarity point you r should focus on), next to polish them @8khz increase you Que to 1.3db (careful), next to create the space for you vocals to sound lush you decrease @ 250hz to -1.2db, to reduce the natural rumble of vocals that are generated by the virbration of the lungs to cut between 350-500 hz ( you may want to dercease you bass in the 60-63 hz range

I really really appreciate this video, but if I could be so bold, your audio on this video is spiking or distorting or something - I would look at your levels. It's difficult to listen to this because of the sound, actually. Also, I might invest in a pop filter (or make one out of panty hose! Feel free to make a vid about it!) Like I said, no offense, you're beautiful & great, but audio needs work.

so the expander is good huh? been looking at that for a while thanks for the recommendation

Expanders are okay. I mean they don't work in the environment I am in I actually just sold them and invested into the SE Reflection Filter which is great.

awesome - good work!
i think (i know!) some people can get a little too techie (or chest beat-y) on studio topics, so it's really good of you to share your knowledge & ingenuity in a concise & practical way.
:)) good on ya chic!!

Curiouz to kno if u think the AT2020, iz a better mic than the MXL 990?
Mrkalikobeatz 2 years ago
i used the mxl 990 for quite a while and i think that most mxl mics are great for beginners on a budget. theyre produce clean sound in a room that is at least somewhat acoustically treated, and they are extremely affordable.

@SHEEmusic Do you have a man? I have job, I'm from The Bronx and I have my own place. Get@me
pppeeeppee 1 year ago
That was very helpful thank you. I've just purchased a NT1A Rode mic and a mic Insulator much like the one you show at 7:43. Hopefully i won't need to sound proof the whole room, the mic was $520 and the insulator around $300, do you think it'll serve me well?? i'm a vocalist looking at putting together my own home studio. i'll have my own room soon in which to set it up. Any other tips before i start setting everything up?? i've heard you shouldn't set it up near any windows, is that true?
Heidiscope 2 years ago
The NT1A is a reputable mic and combined with the insulator...you should be fine. You should avoid noise sources like windows whenever possible.

appreciate u taking the time to explain all this. i wanted to ask what u think is best between the soundproff blankets or the reflection shield, i record in the living room so if i build the booth will tt take up a lot of space and will i be able to take it down easy everyday. or should i just get the reflection filter
