Good lift. I'm the opposite, my squat is much better than my deadlift. But I only deadlift 1-2 times a month, because I squat more often. I pull sumo like you do because my squat stance is a bit wider, so it feels more natural to me. Good lift, hope to see that 405 squat soon.
I'm not, by the way, trying to bash either you or Dracoy, as it's clear you're both rather strong. I just don't feel that deadlifting 495 is a good qualifier for being one of the strongest in the world.
@Draykid Oh, and no one ever said anything about being the strongest in the world. I merely used the adjective, "few." As in, not very many. If there are billions of people in the world and perhaps thousands can lift five plates, then clearly there are not very many people, comparatively, that can move this sort of weight.
Out of the population of individuals training the deadlift seriously I think the statistics are somewhat less favorable; in competition at most weight classes, 495 is nothing to gawk at. That's all that I'm saying. As far as Norberg, as far as I know, he only did manual labor, grip and muscle-out feats, and bench presses.
Excellent work. Congratulations. You are one of the few people in the world who can legit move five plates (each side) on any movement. You should be proud. I guess that sixth plate is next...
@Draykid I'm not sure how your observations has any bearing on my comment. Walk into your average gym, and look around. Unless you are at Westside, or in Iceland, chances are you won't see a single person doing hardly any large compound free-weight movements. And, furthermore, chances are that when you do see them, they aren't doing them correctly or aren't doing them with an appreciable amount of weight. I don't think you can name one person to me who pulled 500 w/out any training.
Uhhh, who said anything about without training? This guy trained for a year to make an extra 20 pounds on his lift.
You just said that a 500 pound deadlift qualifies someone as one of "the few". If you do a search for 495 deadlift, however, you return literally hundreds of results, and most trainees don't post videos.
By the way, Karl Norberg never trained the deadlift, and deadlifted 500 and walked it around the gym on a bet.
@Draykid If you look at the statistics of the situation, something like 95% of the population will be unable to move five plates on any lift. Probably much more. Therefore, in proportion to the majority of the people in the world, this gentleman is one of those "few." You are concentrating on a much smaller population of people and taking my words completely out of context. And I'm certain that Mr. Norberg did other sorts of training, even if he didn't train deadlifs. That example is inapt.
Nice, the main thing I've learned about pulling sumo is you need to make sure your knees go out over your feet, if they cave in and come inside them you lose so much power.
@rak000 Haha thanks. My progress has obviously slowed with > year of training from 475 to 495. My physique has stayed much the same. Being natty is about slow consistent effort. It's about having fun :)
@YoCard Yeah although the progress is slow you will continue to grow I have seen people your weight lift close to 600lbs (with a powerlifting suit). You're an inspiration to all natural lifters like myself man. keep up the good work!! ~ Drakoy

Uh...? A lot of people deadlift or squat over 500 naturally, and did for years before steroids. Bob Peoples deadlifted over 700 natural at 165 or so.
