The proper name of it was/is the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The only fatality was the photographer's dog, which refused to get out of the car. The wreckage of "Galloping Gertie" is still there below the two current bridges, & is a great habitat for marine life.
saw this in physics (study of wave mechanics). It turns out that the distance between the main supports was a pure harmonic of the frequency of the wind blowing through the canyon. The wind transfered energy into the bridge.
