I really don't see what everybody's so upset about. You can see it two ways really: he doesn't talk to God, because he doesn't believe in him. I'm a Christian, and I approve of this song.
I really don't see what everybody's so upset about. Maynard wrote this song, because he couldn't understand why God would let a devoted Christian like his mother, Marie, have a cerebral and lie paralized for so long, only to lead to her death. It's perfectly reasonable to question that, but as a Christian myself, I believe it lead her to a better place.
This song is not about hate for Christians, but anger and sorrow for losing somebody dear to you.

I agree that it is about anger and sorrow that he lost someone dear to him, but he is angry at God for taking someone from him who did nothing. He gave death to someone who didn't deserve it. Anyways, I see your point, but notice he doesn't even talk to God himself. He talks to a 'you', who I'd assume is Judith. You can see it two ways really: he doesn't talk to God, because he doesn't believe in him. Or that he's mad at his mother for keeping faith even after being paralized and sentenced to death (lyrically speaking).

man, alot to comment here one point most have overlooked is that god(in the sense of this song) actually did it for maynard. What mother doesn't have the dream of her son becomming some great big millionare known around the world. And most of maynards lyrics come from his mothers 27yr coma and how he has learned to live with the acceptance of life without her being there. He was 11 when she fell into coma, and he pulled the plug 10,000 days later. what would he sing about if that never happened?

Shooting another point of view: I went to a church that had me narrow minded and judgemental of anything that would say anything like this. BUT: I am still Christian (or hope I am), and from applying Tool's lyrics to this song, I see it in a differnt light. I see it like Isaiah, which I relate frequently to Tool (AEnima, Eulogy, etc..) because they say pretty much the same thing. I take it as referring to psycho-religious people who "damn their neighbor in the name of God"

Reminds me of 1s full of hate in Revelation 11:8-15 known as Muslims who will kill all Jews & Christians (2 witnesses). Jesus gathers 2 witnesses to Him. In Genesis 49:10 it is the Muslims bringing Shiloh only to those of Judah which causes God to gather them. Same story except for more detail in Revelation & only 1 witness mentioned in Genesis.
