Brian, does sound better at times than at others. My friends and I have been trying to figure it out, but I really think it's the key he sings in. I Want It That Way he almost always struggles, but some of the songs with lower keys he doesn't have a problem (like Show Me The Meaning). Also, I think he should start resting his voice more and doing some vocal exercises. His voice is still there.. because on most of the songs, you can hear it.
I have to admit, AJ has been sounding MUCH MUCH better, though. I give him props for sobering up (again...) and supposedly him and Nick are on some kind of special diet to make them get healthier. Omg, I can't believe Brian's voice is getting ruined, but he has been singing those amazing high notes we love since he is like 17, so if the time to stop singing has come, I'm really glad about what the gave us all this years!
Be nice! No one asked NKOTB to quit when Donnie couldn't carry the tune on AMA and Dick Clark's New Yr. Brian's voice is not always this terrible. BSB did great in NKOTBSB concerts and on Today show June 3rd.

@DeathToTheFlesh Well, I still like them (and I'm 29) because of their harmonys. BSB actually still puts out really great music that is now targeted towards more mature fans (like the song Unconsolable). NKOTB's music was always geared towards a teen crowd and they never came out with the quantity (and quality) of songs that BSB does. I like NKOTB but BSB is my group. If you listen to the music without looking at all of the flash and dance you might appreciate some of it.
@HorrorLurker I beg to differ, they certainly did put out the quantity (I won't say quality because that is a matter of opinion) of songs. Do the research. I like them both, and I am nearly 32 (next month) and believe me, those 2 or 3 years make a difference especially when it comes to my memory of nkotb being the focal point of my entire preteen life lol
As a huge fan of bsb. I have to say that I think they really need a break after this bsb tour raps up. Brian's Golden voice has been going to crap ever since his swine flu and his voice and Aj's carries the group. A.J. need to figure out what he wants to do with his life and stop the rehab trips. . I honestly think they should have stopped when Kevin left the group. They no longer have that sweet vocal harmony like they use to have when they were a five man group.
As far as AJ's voice is concerned, I have two explanations. First one being age. AJ's voice has gone from tenor to baritone. The problem? The solos from the earlier BSB recordings require him to sing higher, and he just can't physically hit the notes anymore. Second- the drugs, alcohol, and smoking. If he get's totally sober, and stays that way, and stops smoking, his voice won't be so edgy. But once again, like Brian, he is an amazing singer (go listen to I'll Never Break Your Heart).
And there's no way in hell you can say it's because he's had a cold for the past year and a half and blame it on him "being sick". Sometimes he hides it better than others (such as when they performed on Oprah this past fall). But you can even hear it if you listen closely to the new NKOTBSB recordings. There's something seriously wrong and I hope he's trying to address it. I just want the best for him.
I think the guitarrist was off in the beginning of the song, and that probably didn't help the situation, but that doesn't totally explain it either. His lower register is completely wiped out, and whenever he gets to the high notes, his voice cracks. There has to be something they can do for him because it's just not fair to him. Age doesn't explain it. He was fine up until he got swine flu and he was already like 34 at the time.
I love Brian. But ever since he got swine flu, his voice has changed. I don't care what anyone says. Listen to his live performances before he got sick, and after, and you'll clearly see the difference. I went to three concerts for the This Is Us Tour last year, and he didn't sound "like Brian". He has always been a fabulous vocalist, so for those of you who want to bash him, go listen to any BSB live performance up until October of 2009. Let me hear you sing like that.
I dont care who is best with these two group, now they are in one tour and both are good for me, but i love the dance part in the ending of the nkotb performance.
I always loved the Backstreet Boys. I was about 4 when Millenium came out and my mom blasted that cassette all around the house. I hate to say this but why did they give Brian (I think) so many parts? He sounds really sick lately and even during the AMAs he sounded like that.... He's still a great artist but can someone tell me why? -see what I did there? :D
i like both bands they are both hard working and talented and i dont see why anyone is arguing if anyone sux its nsync they were the ones that were just in it for the money bsb still tours and make records even if they are not as successful as they once were but the true bsb fans are loyal and nkotb were around when i was a baby so i didnt get to appreciate them but now i have become to like them as well

I didn't hear anything mess up during NKOTB's performance, but then again I was too busy staring at Jon to notice anything. lol. By the way Donnie should TOTALLY do DWTS next season. I think he would do really well.

Swine flu has nothing to do with Brian's voice! You have to be kidding! His voice was shaky because they jus finished the 'This is us' world tour on march. He's just over worked. He will do better on NKOTBSB tour this summer. Stop being silly girls we all know they all can sing (Backstreet Boys) of course ;)
@medion8401 to get media attention. Both groups don't need each other to survive because they have pretty decent fan bases. However, radio stations in America consider them "old" and refuse to play their songs, so not many ppl knew NKOTB got back together since 2008 or BSB was still around except their die-hard fans. Whether they decide to make a new album together or go separate ways, I'm sure they will have more fans than before.
The backstreet boys finished the 'This is us' WORLD tour on March. Thats why Brians voice sounded like that. NKOTB is nothing without Jordan Knight. BSB is one man down and still selling studio records and doing world tours. :)

First of all, I don't think they could hear themselves. And if you listen in the beginning, the guitarist was NOT keeping a steady tempo, there may have even been a few missing notes, it's hard to tell. But again, BSB didn't seem like they could hear each other very well in their ears which makes it extremely difficult to sing in harmony like they do. BSB for life! And NKOTB sounded great!!! :)

As far as BSB is concerned, this wasn't their best performance, but they sounded fine on tour. This was a bit an off night for them vocally. NKOTB did better, but they've also had a more relaxing schedule than BSB.

This is a great performance from both groups. Did they perform this on the same night as "Don't Turn Out the Lights Now"? I only knew that they were performing that song and not any others until today when I just saw this video under the "Related Videos" column.

@geminirock19 i heard its because when he did the Unbreakable tour or the album he was singing the higher notes which is hard for a male to sing. so maybe that is why.

BSB are fantastic live so commited to performances they have looked phyisically shattered afterwards. Both groups did great. In all fairness NKOTB did not appear as tired this is due to the fact that BSB constantly tour twice as hard as New kids+record double the amount of albums this takes its toll on voices & is physically draining.I went to see BSB after Brian had swine flu and he was fine vocally, so i dont think swine flu affected his voice-i think he just need a break from touring :)
@MsMaverick16 I think so too because his voice was fine at the This Is Us tour concert I went to. On top of that, I heard he had to deal with his Christian album boycott trouble. They got pulled out the shelves after BSB performed at Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco last yr.

I´m a true backstreet fan and have been for like 15 years, but NKOTB did better. Sorry! I´m so sad that the swine flu Brian had messed up his voice. It´s been like this for a while now and it´s sad because he is a wonderful singer. Nick is truly wonderful, he should have more singing. But in the end it doesn't really matter who is the best and who is not. Both groups are great performances and deserves success. I wish the could have an European tour as well. I don't understand why we keep complaining and arguing about which sounds, better, looks better, dances better, etc. I did, but after seeing their performance of DTOTL I have to admit i loved the song and the performance. I'm still not a BSB fan, but after this I can live with them performing with NKOTB.
Hopefully Brian's voice gets better. These days only Nick sounds good. NKOTB has somehow managed to actually get better vocally live than they ever were during their heyday.
@menoyou I noticed that they all kind if sounded like crap which I know isnt true. I think their ear gear was messed up and they werent hearing themselves right, as well as theie mics werent right cause you could barely hear AJ.

If he get's totally sober, and stays that way, and stops smoking, his voice won't be so edgy. But once again, like Brian, he is an amazing singer (go listen to I'll Never Break Your Heart).

And there's no way in hell you can say it's because he's had a cold for the past year and a half and blame it on him "being sick". Sometimes he hides it better than others (such as when they performed on Oprah this past fall). But you can even hear it if you listen closely to the new NKOTBSB recordings. There's something seriously wrong and I hope he's trying to address it. I just want the best for him.

I think the guitarrist was off in the beginning of the song, and that probably didn't help the situation, but that doesn't totally explain it either. His lower register is completely wiped out, and whenever he gets to the high notes, his voice cracks. There has to be something they can do for him because it's just not fair to him. Age doesn't explain it. He was fine up until he got swine flu and he was already like 34 at the time.

I love Brian. But ever since he got swine flu, his voice has changed. I don't care what anyone says. Listen to his live performances before he got sick, and after, and you'll clearly see the difference. I went to three concerts for the This Is Us Tour last year, and he didn't sound "like Brian". He has always been a fabulous vocalist, so for those of you who want to bash him, go listen to any BSB live performance up until October of 2009. Let me hear you sing like that.

First off, the guitarist was DEFINITELY off... second, Brian may have been sick. I can tell that. Otherwise they would have sounded better.
I still think it's mainly the guitarist's fault.
And, I thought he sounded fine at AMAs.

I always loved the Backstreet Boys. I was about 4 when Millenium came out and my mom blasted that cassette all around the house. I hate to say this but why did they give Brian (I think) so many parts? He sounds really sick lately and even during the AMAs he sounded like that.... He's still a great artist but can someone tell me why? -see what I did there? :D

i like both bands they are both hard working and talented and i dont see why anyone is arguing if anyone sux its nsync they were the ones that were just in it for the money bsb still tours and make records even if they are not as successful as they once were but the true bsb fans are loyal and nkotb were around when i was a baby so i didnt get to appreciate them but now i have become to like them as well

I agree that Brian did sound a little sick, but he still did well though. I love BSB! I didn't hear anything mess up during NKOTB's performance, but then again I was too busy staring at Jon to notice anything. lol. By the way Donnie should TOTALLY do DWTS next season. I think he would do really well.

Swine flu has nothing to do with Brian's voice! You have to be kidding! His voice was shaky because they jus finished the 'This is us' world tour on march. He's just over worked. @medion8401 to get media attention. Both groups don't need each other to survive because they have pretty decent fan bases. However, radio stations in America consider them "old" and refuse to play their songs, so not many ppl knew NKOTB got back together since 2008 or BSB was still around except their die-hard fans. Whether they decide to make a new album together or go separate ways, I'm sure they will have more fans than before.

The backstreet boys finished the 'This is us' WORLD tour on March. Thats why Brians voice sounded like that. NKOTB is nothing without Jordan Knight. BSB is one man down and still selling studio records and doing world tours. :)

First of all, I don't think they could hear themselves. And if you listen in the beginning, the guitarist was NOT keeping a steady tempo, there may have even been a few missing notes, it's hard to tell. But again, BSB didn't seem like they could hear each other very well in their ears which makes it extremely difficult to sing in harmony like they do. BSB for life! And NKOTB sounded great!!! :)

As far as BSB is concerned, this wasn't their best performance, but they sounded fine on tour. This was a bit an off night for them vocally. NKOTB did better, but they've also had a more relaxing schedule than BSB.

BSB are fantastic live so commited to performances they have looked phyisically shattered afterwards. Both groups did great. In all fairness NKOTB did not appear as tired this is due to the fact that BSB constantly tour twice as hard as New kids+record double the amount of albums this takes its toll on voices & is physically draining.I went to see BSB after Brian had swine flu and he was fine vocally, so i dont think swine flu affected his voice-i think he just need a break from touring :)

@MsMaverick16 I think so too because his voice was fine at the This Is Us tour concert I went to. On top of that, I heard he had to deal with his Christian album boycott trouble. They got pulled out the shelves after BSB performed at Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco last yr.

And p.s. all, I thought I was the only one who noticed Brian's voice. I've been so worried, because I know he has it in him, he's actually one of the better singers out there. I hope he can get some rest, poor guy.

I´m a true backstreet fan and have been for like 15 years, but NKOTB did better. Sorry! I´m so sad that the swine flu Brian had messed up his voice. It´s been like this for a while now and it´s sad because he is a wonderful singer. Nick is truly wonderful, he should have more singing. But in the end it doesn't really matter who is the best and who is not. Both groups are great performances and deserves success. I wish the could have an European tour as well. Anybody know something about that?

I don't understand why we keep complaining and arguing about which sounds, better, looks better, dances better, etc. I did, but after seeing their performance of DTOTL I have to admit i loved the song and the performance. I'm still not a BSB fan, but after this I can live with them performing with NKOTB.

Hopefully Brian's voice gets better. These days only Nick sounds good. NKOTB has somehow managed to actually get better vocally live than they ever were during their heyday.
