Like Barbara is going to come back from the grave to verify this claim - love how he tries to proclaim how "virile" he is. But when it come to honoring his late wife, Natalie Wood, he avoids the subject - gee, I wonder why.
Barbara Stanwyck was an exemplary person and a true class act. She was a very private person, and these comments about her orientation are kind of disgusting. What does it matter?!?! I'm not exactly a RW fan, but he does say lovely things about her, as does anyone else who knew her. If you want to start taking tallies about the private lives of people in Old Hollywood, well, you'll find plenty of lies, rumor and scandal.
It was sad in 1981 when an inrtuder beat up and robbed Barbara Stanwyk in her own home. Barbara was not a beauty, but she was an outstanding actress. Robert Wagner was 22 and she was 45 when they got together. Robert was breathtakingly handsome young man, I can see why she felt that he was irresistible.
@TheWhistler3 She was rated as the 11th greatest actress of all time. That's what counts for me. Stella Dallas really moved me, and I need to see more of her movies, but by God, her role as Mary Carson in the "Thorn Birds," her last "command performance" (though she did perform for a season on TV in "The Colbys" and did well in that)...but...as Mary Carson, WOW!!! What a note to go out on!!! That VOICE, and her sheer POWER!!! And quite attractive at the age of 75 in that role.
I interviewed him when this book came out. He wrote about his life and she had a major influence on him when they were together and he always cherished his time with her. They might have married but at the time he was much younger than she and it would not have been socially or professionally accepted. I've always loved RJ since "It Takes A Thief" and he is a very classy man and very nice to me during the interview.
She was a lesbian BUT a wonderful woman and a great friend. Just like her husbands and Robert Wagner, they were her beards. This does not take one iota away from her talent, compassion and kindness as a person. Hollywood is just not honest.
@toucheturtle300 What a pathetically political definition you have of 'lesbian' --> if she fucked with MEN she cannot be a lesbian. There is not a lesbian who is not a flawed image trying to be a male by the way.
I was suprised to hear about his affair with Barbara. I had always heard that she was a lesbian. I guess she was bi-sexual? Great lady whatever way she went.
@StaunchComic She was a lesbian, as others have said here. Let's just say that Wagner is probably not exactly telling the truth. Still trying to keep that closet door shut.
@dannybex What a pathetically political definition you have of 'lesbian' --> if she fucked with MEN she cannot be a lesbian. There is not a lesbian who is not a flawed image of a wannabe male by the way.
@dannybex How do you know? She dated a lot of men. The rest is all hear say. Not that it matters. I'm not sure Mr. Wagner should be mentioning his 'relationship' with a classy lady. Ms. s would not have said the same of him. Its sort of tacky. Glad he DOES mention that he says she was a wonderful woman--that is the truth. A real star and real person--
I suppose Barbara could have been considered a "cougar" for her time. She had a deep friendship, and possibly more with William Holden too. Even after those relationships faded, the friendships always remained. She was very beloved and respected.
@weightfeather1 That's very interesting since Stefanie Powers had a nine year relationship with Holden. Do you know when he and Ms. Stanwyck were together?
I dunno. There seems to be missing pieces of the puzzle here (from what I understand of other aspects of Ms. Stanwyck's life, for instance). Mr. Wagner seems to be whitewashing things a bit (based on these interviews - I admit I haven't read the book).
sept12twilite needs to get over it already. If you can't stand him, why do you watch all the clips about him? I've seen your negative comments before. Are you a frustrated RJ wannabe? The guy is a class act all the way! Back off.

He talks about boffing an old lady like Stanwyck but he forgets to mention how his wife drowned and he waited 4 hours to call the authorities. Oh yes, Wagner is about as classy as the gout.
How is he conceited? He is being very respectful of her and only saying nice things, I see nothing wrong with this. It's not like he is giving intimate details of their sex life, he is saying that he feels very lucky to have been involved with her. What's wrong with that?
@germangirlclassic You are absolutely correct!! Anything goes in tacky America. We have no class--except for certain wonderful people like Miss Stanwyck--she kept her private life to herself--and we should respect that of others!!

In short, LEAVE BARBARA ALONE. ;-)

This is a beautiful tribute and in the book he wrote the words he uses to express this important love in his life - exquisite.

If she was a lesbian, and she sleep with men, could she be bisexual? And frankly who cares.
